Most soldiers I know take their duty serious and honor serious. Even if they didn't like him on personal level it would be a whole level of corrupt for them not respect his service if it is deserved.

People in his unit would know better than anyone his mindset and intentions. If he wasn't a deserter or if he was a good soldier wouldn't atleast one soldier in his unit come to his defense? You can tell alot from a man by what the people closest to him think of him.

^Has a single fellow soldier that was in his unit come to his defense? I think it's pretty clear the guy simply walked away.
