  1. I'm watching some of the game that is being played right now and neither of these teams is impressive at all. Elliott would beat either of these teams.

I heard the announcers say that Boy's and Girl's Club (with a woman coach) is expected to be in the semifinals or finals rather easily. They must be loaded.

They also alluded to the number Elliott fans already in attendance

Boys and Girls is a high school in Brooklyn. Earlier in the week, ESPN ran a two hour special on the basketball team and its woman coach. Part of the program showed B and G playing in last year's BBC.

Last year, B and G lost the city championship to Lincoln- a bigtime school. They are not biased but, of course, they could be proven wrong.

I would be cautious in declaring the supremacy of EC over some of these teams. The promoters and those who follow the tournament closely each year do not consider EC to be one of the top teams in the tournament.

  2. It's too bad Elliott didn't draw one of the South Carolina schools, they always seem to get beaten up during this tournament.

If Elliott loses to Cedar Hill, they likely will play a South Carolina team. Myrtle Beach will take on Martin Luther King High School from California tomorrow in the game following Elliott Co. I figure MLK will follow suit and beat up on the local school.

So if the Lions don't win, they could very well be assured of at least one win in the consolation bracket.

Unlike many tournaments, this is not one in which the promoters set up the matchups so as to keep the locals in the championship bracket. The locals usually play those expected to be the better teams in the opening round. That appears to be the case again this year with Mullins playing St. Patrick, Socastee playing Patterson Catholic, and MB playing MLK. That tough pairing extends to the two other SC schools with Southside playing Arlington Country Day and Mann playing Boys and Girls.

There is no mercy shown for the teams from the Palmetto State.

Some may be interested to know that the tournament was headed for a number of years by Danny D'Antoni, older brother of Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni. Danny was head basketball coach at Socastee. The D'Antoni brothers had fine careers at Marshall University after playing for their father, Lou D'Antoni, at Mullins, WV. The D'Antonis relocated in MB years ago and ran a popular sports bar.

  3. Good, though not surprising, to see Jordan Whiting on the first team defensive unit. Defensive players never get the recognition that they deserve but it still should be mentioned that Whiting is considered by most recruiters and scouts to be the top college prospect in the Kentucky High School Class of 2009.

I tip my green shamrock hat to Whiting and to Tim Phillips.

  4. Will all the games be broadcast on the radio? It looks like a fairly well balanced tournament with no clear favorite and no real dud. The AIT is a far cry from what it was in its early years when it was known as the Greenbo Invitational Tournament and was played at the Ashland Armory. Back then it rivaled the state tournament as to having a strong field. Now everybody has a tournament of sorts and, with a couple of exceptions in Lexington and Louisville, it is all watered down.

The local schools could surprise so fans should get out and support the tournament.

  5. I thought this was a Rose Hill thread. Rose Hill will play again on December 27. They will be playing Manchester OH on David Garnes night. Hope to see all the RH fans come out for this one.

I would hope that a large crowd comes out for the Manchester game which will be the first home game. But, of more importance is the fact that it will be David Garnes Night.

  6. Does anyone doubt that, just as soon as enough votes are "gleamed" from the rejected ballots, Franken will be declared the winner? When does it end? Just as soon as Al in ahead. It reminds one of the Washington governor's race a few years ago and look what a nut she has turned out to be.

It will be an "interesting" senate that will remind one of Camelot with Franken as the court fool and Princess Caroline as the reigning royalty. Throw in the possibility of "Triple J" from Illinois and you have a real hat trick (or, in bowling we could say a "turkey").

Boy, are we in for "change".

Where is all the endless assault about qualifications that we heard day in and day out about Palin? The media is "oddly" quiet.;)

  7. Good grief. Can't those who seek to detract from Trinity's impressive win just let it go. The boy will be fine and that is most important. However, to go over and over this one incident (which had nothing whatsoever to do with the outcome of the game and which resulted in no permanent injury to anyone) is ridiculous.

Once we knew the boy would be fine, it was time to move on and salute Trinity for its overwhelming display of superiority in the championship game. Simon Kenton should be congratulated for a fine season. However, they lost. And, if we are honest, St. Xavier should have been there instead.

  8. Sounds like a little tradition "envy" to me... Some people have to constantly take their shots at Ashland like we don't know how you truly feel.

If you thought I took a shot at Ashland, I apologize. That was not my intention. I merely sought to add some facts to put everything into the proper prospective. I thought oldrambler was doing a little too much unwarranted "gilding of the lily". No one should ever question Ashland's belief in its tradition. It bonds you boys.

  9. How much news on anything do you hear from Alaska?

What does Rev. Wright's church have to do with anything? Why would Palin's church be more important than any other church?

Have you forgotten the armies of reporters who descended upon Alaska to dig up dirt on Palin? Of course, this will not get any coverage on the usual liberal media outlets unless Palin can be tied to the crime.

On the other hand, if this were Wright's church or Obama's church (assuming he has one which may be a large assumption on my part), we'd have the FBI, CIA, media, and all local and state law enforcement groups in hot pursuit. It would be constant coverage that would even knock Caylee Anthony off the air. Barney, Harry, Chuck, Nancy, Jesse, and all the others would be ringing their hands and gnashing their teeth.

  10. If you thought that I was putting Ashland over Trinity then you are mistaken. I was using the "2nd to none" analogy as a figure of speech, nothing more...nothing less. Same with the other references If I offended you by that then I apologize. You thinking that I stepped on your precious Shamrocks is what is laughable.

Geez, and people think that I am sensitve. :sssh::lol:.

I apologize for treading on Trinity, Highlands and any others that were offended.:walk:

Glad you clarified your position although "second to none" leaves little to imagination. The nuances of your post were not obvious from its wording. However, I do detect a little animousity in your last post. However, facts are facts and truth is truth.

I, like many, respect the Ashland tradition. It seems to be mentioned quite regularly. However, we must remember that the tradition stems from the late 1920s and early 1930s. Somehow, I think it is significant that it was built closer to the time of the presidency of Abraham Lincoln than to the present day. I believe there are two types of tradition. One represents longivity. The other represents achievement. Probably you were referring to the former rather than the latter. Again, I am just trying to add a little perspective to all this tradition claiming. :ylsuper:

  11. Don't get sick over it mayor , just an opinion. If that is your opinion then so be it. I don't have a problem with it.

Besides, I don't think an Ashland p.r. machine got them more wins than any program in Ky. High School basketball history (unless I am mistaken they still own that honor). If it did, then I want those p.r. guys :D.

I just believe that if someone wants to look at history and tradition then you look at all of it, not just the years/parts that they want to. :thumb:

    JMO

Indeed you look at all of it. You look at what happened in the early days. But, even though it is nice to remember the 1920s and 1930s, you also look at what has happened in the last 40 years or so.

As a supporter of Louisville Trinity, I find it rather amusing that you imply that the Shamrock's football tradition is second to Ashland. Trinity's 19 state championships clearly prove that you have no credibility. And, don't you think that Highlands has a little tradition of its own?

It is fine to be a partisan. However, one must not bury his/her head in the sand and be oblivious to facts. I'm afraid you are doing just that.

Ashland has its tradition. However, to compare it with Trinity, Highlands, and a few more (Boyle County, St. X., Beechwood, NCC, etc.) is laughable.

  12. RockMom, I was wrong where? I was speaking of counties, neighborhood schools no longer exists except for maybe two Central/Shawnee.

At Male we had one kid from Oldham county, the rest Jefferson. 68 kids on the team.

I spoke of numbers. The three best public aschools SK/Eastern/Manual got beat by a total of 254-15 by X/Rocks. The best three. Can someone show me the county breakdowns?

The numbers don't lie, and people tell us..."you need to step it up".

Yes indeed, you publics need to step it up. Don't always look for crutches to prop up your lack of success. If our founders had used this philosophy we would still be a possession of Great Britain or, in the alternative, speaking German.

As long as you publics whine and cry for that "level playing field" (whatever that is), you will continue to be second best (or, in the case of Class 6A, third best).

Suck it up and work harder and remove sour grapes from your diet.

  13. How did this get pulled into another Elliott County game thread?

Can someone start an alternate thread about the ins and outs of Elliott's schedule so that we can keep these to the games at hand?

Actually the post does analyze the upcoming battle between Elliott County and Boyd County. I guess I touched a nerve by suggesting that beating up on Boyd County, et als. won't help your Lions in the long run (ie: March in Rupp Arena).

All in the 16th Region are rooting for Elliott County. If the weather holds, I'll be in Myrtle Beach for the Beach Ball Classic. Hopefully, you will be there, too.

  14. I voted for BC. Everyone should get at least one vote even if it is tongue in cheek.

This game, as well as most of the rest of their schedule, will not aid EC in preparing for top flight competition. They definitely need to play someone like St. Patrick of NJ while at Myrtle Beach. There are no St. Patricks in the 16th Region (understatement of the day).

  15. If you want to look at it that way, then why doesn't the KHSAA take the preseason top 2 and ensure they are on different sides of the bracket every year?

That is probably a fine idea for Class 6A. However, preseason does not often reveal the two top teams in the other five classes- with the possible exception of Highlands, of course.:thumb:

  16. Trying to compare MLB to high school football is a joke. MLB has definitive leagues that don't change. You set up distinct regions and stick with it. You don't change things around to accomodate, at the time, the two best teams in the state. If MLB did the same, they would move the Yankees or Red Sox over to the National League just so the likelihood of the championship contains those two teams. When you do that, that is a flawed system. You don't change this around to accomodate the hot teams so you can fatten your pocketbook, which is what the KHSAA does when they put St. X and Trinity on different sides of the bracket. You don't see the OHSAA changing things each year to have two Cincinnati schools on opposite sides of the bracket, which traditionally have the top 2 teams in the state. I have nothing against Trinity or St. X playing in 6A unlike many others. I just think the way the KHSAA handles their playoff system is wrong.

I understand what you are saying. You oppose having the two best teams reach the championship. I suppose that is fine but you will end up with a lot of 48-0 games (and worse) all for the sake of "inclusion of lessers".
