I get what you're saying...but realistically, I think we're somewhat spoiled by the KHSAA Scoreboard for high schools. That has been a genuinely fantastic resource for folks around the state (including sports writers) as far as creating one centralized center for scores and sports data.

The fact is, the KHSAA had to dedicate some serious resources back in the late 90s to get database and software development guru Frank Riherd to create the Scoreboard, and since then the KHSAA has spent a lot of time and effort and cajoling to get schools to report to the Scoreboard - and there are still programs that are woefully late or completely delinquent about reporting in some sports still. In a lot of states, there are absolutely no equivalent resources to the Scoreboard. Getting something rolling that for middle school sports, especially without a singular governing body like the KHSAA is for high school sports in the state, seems like an awfully tall order.

There are two main middle school leagues in nky as I understand it. Really just one that holds the majority of the teams, the NKMSAA. Yes, it would be great if they had a scoreboard of some sort. Or even a calendar, and not a downloadable PDF for schedules. There’s a lot that could be done there. It would also be nice if they had contact information available so that interested parties could reach out to either help or ask for more information.

Exactly. It's going to take Highlands a couple of years to get everything back in place. They have some very strong classes coming up.

It might not take as long as some think. I’m not sleeping on this squad, but they will be stacked next year. This group has some solid seniors, but the juniors and sophomores are killing it right now. And current freshmen are loaded. They’re about to go on a 2-3 year run Highlands fans haven’t seen since the Mueller era.

Could ACTUALLY be for academic reasons? (Shocking premise, I know.)

Maybe as an undersized freshman he wanted another year to develop physically?

Maybe he was bummed because he wanted to play QB and BW had their starting QB repeat his senior year and mess up the pecking order underneath?

It’s not for academic reasons. Let’s not be naive.

Beechwood definitely should be one of the better freshman teams in the area this year.  I know the Beechwood program as a whole had a decent amount of players reclassify in the program. Im not sure if it is true or not but I thought I heard someone say Beechwood had some freshman from last year also reclassify, and are playing freshman again. So either way the future is definitely going to continue to be bright for Beechwood for many years.

Freshmen reclassifying. Gotta love it. Did they not get to go to enough camps or get enough exposure….

This makes the most sense to me thus far as for the perceived influx of cincy kids.

Speaking of colonel youth, how does that work for the teams that play in the NKMSAA? From what I understand the 7th graders (NKMSAA) have to attend a parochial school, no public. The younger teams (GCYL) just have to be parish members. But this year they have two 8th grade teams if I understand correctly. One playing GCYL and one playing NKMSAA. Do they really have one 8th grade team that consists solely of parochial students, and another 8th grade team that allows public school kids?

*not sure what’s up the quote. It was in regards to colonel youth playing in the GCYL

Maybe since the big city is across the river. Opposite in Louisville, maybe people over in Indiana would be not happy if Louisville kids flocked over to Providence. Definitely seems more of an issue in Northern KY.

Agreed. And it’s the only major private school in NKY. There are a bunch of them in Cincinnati, and that’s why it’s a non issue over there. So I think the river does make a difference. Those teams are competing against one another. CovCath has no real competitor in NKY when it comes to private schools.

I appreciate all of the info. And if the faithful are okay with it, it is what it is. I don’t believe it’s the same dynamic as it was 20 years ago though, unless someone can breakdown where the kids on the football team, 9-12 are living these days. I’m sure someone knows right?  I’m told the frosh are loaded with Ohio kids. Is that untrue?

If not, what changed. Has covcaths tuition not always been less than the Cincinnati schools?  The only reason I’m asking this stuff is out of curiosity. I’m fascinated with the differences between private and public and the challenges / advantages posed.  What seems to have taken place at CovCath the last 5+ years seems pretty unique, and where better to get the scoop.

I was there in the 90s. I would say that probably 3 out of 5 of the guys I graduated with came from St. Agnes, Blessed Sacrament, St. Joe's (Crescent Springs), and St. Pius X. There were a couple from Ludlow, a couple from Covington, a couple from Erlanger/Elsmere, one from Verona, and the majority of the rest were from Hebron, Union, and Florence.

Just looked through my dad's senior yearbook, which lists "home parishes" for the class of 1966. They had 16 out of 173 kids coming from non-feeder schools.

I did think it was funny a handful of months ago when I was talking to one of my buddies who grew up in St. Pius X parish and he made a comment about "kids at Cov Cath from non-traditional feeder schools," and I set him aback when I pointed out that he came from a school that was at one point a non-traditional feeder school. The original feeder parishes at Cov Cath were St. Agnes, St. Aloysius, St. Ann, St. Augustine, St. Benedict, Blessed Sacrament, St. Boniface, St. James, St. John, St. Joseph (Covington), St. Mary’s Cathedral, Mother of God, and St. Patrick. It wasn't until the early 60s that St. Pius X and St. Joe's Crescent Springs were added in as feeder parishes to Cov Cath.

Sounds about like what I would expect. Are we saying that this is still the case or no?  As it relates to the football team.

This sounds like Little Johnny's dad being mad he's not good enough to play, but that's just me.

Jesus. I have no children attending CovCath. I do however feel for those kids who it might affect. No skin in the game whatsoever though. I just prefer the way it used to be.

I've always been under the impression that any private school had students who didn't necessarily live "in the neighborhood." If someone has an issue because a particular private school takes students from beyond their immediate area, I have a hard time understanding that logic.

I fully expect any private school to have kids from outside the neighborhood. It just feels like it’s been taken to another level entirely when the starting 5 all live in another state. I have been lead to believe this is becoming the norm in football as well. Maybe I’m just living in the past.

  10. Fair enough. I have only recently started following the local sports scene again and this is the one thing that struck me as different from say 20 years ago. I have a lot of family that went to CovCath and it seemed like back then at least, they pulled from Edgewood, Villa Hills, Covington, Ft Mitchell and Ft Wright. Which made/makes sense.  IMO rivalries and community support are always better when the teams are made up of kids from the area. Just curious if that was how the fan base felt. Thanks.

  11. Do the Covington Catholic faithful feel a disconnect with the direction of the football and basketball programs? Is there less of a community feel?  Was there ever?  Is there animosity from locals about it becoming a commuter school for Ohio kids that could care less about Park Hills, Covington, or the surrounding areas?  Maybe this has always been the case, I really don’t know. This isn’t the way I remember the colonels fielding teams back in the day, so I wondered how fans feel about it. Or if they even care as long as they win.

    Hats off to Highlands.

Consider this and you will understand my earlier comments concerning how uncertain the Purples offense is (so hard for me to say because BG usually dominates on offense).

    The Final score was 21-18

    Take a way pic 6 and it’s 14-18 Purples

Even give back the safety points and it’s 14-16 in favor of Purples

    My point….

BG defense allows Highlands only 14 points and Purples still gets beat. That doesn’t happen in 19 out of 20 seasons.

This year for Purples is one of those seasons - If decisions aren’t made on offense to move some personnel around, losing regular season for Purples.

Top 5 defense in Purples history and could possibly have losing season - mind boggling.

Again, congrats to Highlands. Not taking anything at all away from you - you all deserved the win.

I have more to say about my thoughts but I’ll bite my tongue!

Highlands played without their starting QB.

It was a really dumb call. Jaw dropping dumb. None of us or any body in our section could believe it.  BG had a great chance for a game tying field goal at the end because of it too. Just a really bad offensive play call gave up an interception instead.

I respectfully disagree. Anyone watching the game knew BG was inches from blocking every single one of HHS’s punts tonight. Backed up like that, down 5, everyone had it in the back of their mind.  I know I did.  Even going for it would have been better than punting. I like the call. But the punt protection needs work.
