    Thoughts.

Kids are held back every single year between K-8. KHSAA passed a law a couple of years ago that allows them to play without sitting out. Nobody was crying then.

Was it good for the kids who stayed back? An extra year at home being a kid, an extra year playing high school sports, an extra year in K-12 educational setting, the kid is probably getting more playing time and more exposure, so I mean for that student, then yes absolutely.

What if it was only done for sports? I would hope everyone on this forum knows that sports might be the best educational tool that ever existed. Sports are an education! The best education I ever got was on the basketball court.

Does this mean others will suffer because that kid who stayed back is going to benefit? Yes, because that’s how society works. Is it that kids fault for staying back? No. Every student had the opportunity. When opportunity comes knocking… you take it. Some people watch it others respond.

Don’t be mad you didn’t respond. Btw our team only had I think 3 stay back in High School grades.

48 other states didn’t respond. For a reason. It’s a stupid rule that was clearly going to be taken advantage of. And it was, by nearly every one of these kids, parents and programs who participated. Do you really think that the majority of these kids did it for academics? Really?

I am thinking yes.  I think you want to send a statement to the other team not to bother in the playoffs.

    What do you think?

I don’t think so given the relationship between Eviston and Sphire. And that Highlands players participated in a fundraiser for CovCath earlier in the year, possibly in relation to Eddie’s brother. I could have that incorrect but there was a show of support that took place in the spring.

In other words, if an 8th grade student is held back, he can't play 8th grade sports again.

And according to the post that Guru quoted, this is happening all over the region? I don’t buy it. I absolutely haven’t seen it. I know plenty of kids who were held back in kindergarten or first grade because of maturity or development concerns, sure. I don’t know of a single kid within 4 years in either direction of my sons who has intentionally stayed back. And they’re supposedly some of the best athletes in northern Kentucky? Well who are they, and which year of middle school did they give up?

  4. Simply doing “what is in the best interest of YOUR kid” doesn’t make it right. Life is hard. Not a single kid had it any harder than anyone else last year. The poster from above chose to leave whatever district they were in, and come to Beechwood. It’s a tough school. Socializing is never easy when coming to a new school. That’s a given. Doesn’t mean you should get to do it again because you thought it was hard. You made that choice. The fact that college coaches and the NCAA were a factor in the decision tells me about all I need to know.

That all makes perfect sense.  But those independent school districts all have a lot of pride.  But honestly, if they want those kids to consistently compete for championships, they may need to forego pride for the sake of the athletes.

I’d love to see it for the sake of the kids and communities. I get why they’d oppose it but the upside is pretty strong. Bellevue and Dayton have already merged youth football. It may be a case of join or cease to exist if this continues.

  6. Time to merge. Heard someone tossing around the idea of Newport, Bellevue and Dayton becoming one district and high school, North Campbell. Said put the new school where Bellevue’s football field is and keep Newport’s playing fields just across the bridge. Doesn’t not make sense.

I LOVE all this jealousy from the Bird and Blue Boy fans! For little ole Beechwood! All these grown men on here mad cause they didn’t get an extra year to maybe start! 😂

You’ve got that all wrong. I would never let my son do this and I’d be embarrassed to do it myself. Has nothing to do with jealousy at all. If you think folks are “jealous” of beechwood or the reclassified kids you are sadly mistaken. I feel sorry for them.

    Apparently you care, a lot...

Everyone should care. I’m shocked by how many parents I meet who had no idea kids did this or to the extent Beechwood is participating. I haven’t met a single person who doesn’t shake their head and ask why. It’s a joke and any kid who stayed back to gain an edge should own it. Their parents should own it, their coaches should own it, and opposing fans should let them have it.

The Birds haven’t done a whole lot of winning the last several years, so I guess they need a lot of college kids, but you have that Elephant tusk, so that should even the playing field.

They did some winning on Saturday vs  beechwoods 7th grade team. Even with an 8th grader scoring all of beechwoods points. Lol.

The birds will be fine, the wins are coming. They’ll be legitimate, and even sweeter. Wouldn’t want to be a part of what the tigers are doing or how they’re doing it. Our boys will know they did it right.

It isn’t even remotely close to “over 18 varsity players”. The number seems to grow each week. At this rate,  it’ll be upwards of 40 kids reclassifying by seasons end.

If we are interested in facts, the actual number is 16 kids, K-12.

I look forward to talking about this again on the next thread pertaining to Beechwood Football.

Why don’t we just make it easy and let everyone know who they are since there’s so much speculation. Own it.

Still a ridiculous number. Good luck to all of them. I hope they get what they want out of it. And are prepared for the “he’s a fifth year” chants. Lol. Classic.

Question. When the "reclassified" 7th grade running back reaches 9th grade in a couple of years he might have a shot at making Beechwood's varsity team and perhaps he may get some minutes. So if he excels against 10th, 11th and 12th graders will it be because he is a reclassified student-athlete or will it be because he is just a better athlete? There are teams all over the Commonwealth with reclassified players this year but all I seem to read and hear is Beechwood this and Beechwood that. And I also do not have a dog in the fight.

That’s a big what if. It’s probably because beechwood has over 18 varsity players who reclassified, and many more between elementary and freshman. They’re the poster child. I have not heard of anyone else with that many. Certainly not by a team up north. They will continue to be criticized for it. It’s not going away.
