The equipment thing needs to be heavily enforced for no other reason than player safety, look at what Cooper and Scott Co went through in the playoffs last year. I’m old man yelling cloud here, but your knee pads need to be covering your knees when you’re in an upright position, and mouth pieces need to be in your mouth not dangling from your face mask.

Serious question - Is there any evidence that knee pads do anything to prevent injuries? I would love to see some documentation.

  2. Manual was in a difficult position having to hire a coach in July. Coach Gillispie stepped in under difficult circumstances and did a solid job. I'm sure that will weigh in his favor in this process.

On the other hand, the school did not get a chance to do a full search for their new coach. This program hasn't made it past the 2nd round of the playoffs in 15 years. They haven't beaten their rival on Preston Highway for 10 years. For a program that is consistently in the top 10 in 6A, that is a surprise. They owe it to themselves, and more importantly, their kids to see if there is an applicant they think can take their program to the next level.

Keep in mind, there are lots of things we can't see from the outside that impact the long term performance of the program. Most of us only see the scores. How did the staff function this year? How does the team feel about Gillispie? Were the players held to a high standard on and off the field? Were the players supervised appropriately? etc.

Finally, the staff this year was mostly the same people hired by the previous coach. It may be that Manual wants/needs to make a clean break from all or part of that group and start fresh. I certainly wouldn't blame them if that's the case.

  3. I have a novel idea: Instead of picking and choosing which plays to call a hold, why not call ALL the holds? Players will adjust and stop holding if the rule is consistently enforced. The fact that it's usually not called makes kids think it's ok to do it.

Maybe adults feel that way. For the seniors on the teams they would most likely give their arm to play that game. I feel bad for those kids. They know they're not going to win but to just not play isn't something I can get behind.

This problem is easily solved. The top 2 or 3 teams in each district make the playoffs. Let the teams that did not make it schedule an additional game the week of round 1. Then those kids get to play a competitive game.

  5. 2013 Male Bulldogs (12-2). They beat St. X and Trinity in consecutive weeks in the regular season and lost to Manual the following week. In the playoffs, they beat St. X and Trinity in consecutive weeks again. This state they lost to eventual state champion Scott Co. the following week.

  6. Here's my take on 5A. There are 11 teams west of the Louisville area. I doubt they will force 1-2 of those teams to travel all the way to Louisville, so I think there will be a 5 team & a 6 team district in the west. Similarly, there are 6 schools in Northern KY that all very close to one another and not really close to anyone else. I think they create another 6 team district for those schools. In the Louisville area, I used I-65 as a dividing line because that's what they did last time.

District 1: Graves Co., Marshall Co., Madisonville N. Hopkins, Muhlenberg Co., Owensboro

District 2: Bowling Green, Greenwood, Warren Central, Grayson Co., Barren Co., Ohio Co.

District 3: Butler, Iroquois, Fairdale, Bullitt Central

District 4: Atheron, N. Bullit, Seneca, Moore

District 5: Woodford Co., Collins, S. Oldham, Anderson Co.

District 6: Highlands, Scott, Dixie Heights, Boone Co., Conner, Cooper

District 7: Madison Southern, Montgomery Co., East Jessamine, West Jessamine, Scott Co.

District 8: Southwestern, Pulaski Co., North Laurel, South Laurel, Harlan Co.

I give you Male and Manual plays competitive games but they never win. At some point and time you have to wonder what’s the point. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

Male never wins against X or T? Is that really what you meant to say? Maybe I'm not understanding you correctly.

Right, most likely Male and St. X districts would be paired up and one of those teams losing in 2nd round. This past year they didn't play until Championship. I'm in favor of sister districts though because silly to play team you just played couple weeks before playoffs.

Assuming Male and St. X both win their district. They would not play in the first 2 rounds. Each would play the 4 seed from the other district in round 1, then the winner of one of the 2v3 games.

It sounds like they would continue to use RPI for round 3 and beyond.

Manual can take who they want.  They are more selective, but they can take any kid in JCPS.  I know the current sophomore class for football had quite a few kids from Westport Middle and the current sophomore basketball class had quite a few from Meyzeek.  Both schools had good teams for those classes in those respective sports.  Their primary MS is Noe however.  In all honesty, Male can take whoever they want as well.  It's a bit different, but they can get just about whoever they want.  If you didn't go to one of the 3 traditional MS schools (JCTMS, Barret or Johnson) and you want to go to Male, you have to enter a lottery.  It's supposedly a blind draw and you're not guaranteed a spot, but.....many kids like Kaleb Glenn came from non-traditional middle schools and were selected in the lottery, earning a spot at Male.

I seen this posted before about Male. Who are the kids that played football for Male that were not in one of the 3 traditional middle schools over the last 10 years?
