You are flying solo here and sounds like you may have an ax to grind and not sure why but ok.  The program is in good shape and the middle school program seems to have good numbers as well so I am sure the Cooper staff will continue to coach the players as best they can and put them in the best position to be as successful as they can be.

No ax to grind, just stating simple analytical data. I am sure all the coaches will do their best to teach and coach the young men. The kids are a great group, I just believe they need someone different to lead.

He started the program in 2008 and in just 4 seasons had the team in the state finals in 2012. Then in 2014 another regional championship and state semi finals appearance. In 2015 when in 6A won the district and made a regional championship appearance and lost on basically the last play of the game to Simon Kenton who was a top 5 team that year. Now after that yeah they definitely had some down years starting in 2017. Which the talent level definitely was down for a lot of those years, and data you like to talk about also backs that up by how a lot of those groups those years didn’t do well in freshman, JV, or Varsity. So the talent level was definitely down some for a few years.  Not to mention that was when the state went to inter district in playoffs, so a lot of times having to play a CovCath early in the playoffs when CovCath was a top 5 team in the state regardless of class leading to being knocked out early. There is only one year where it could be argued that they lost earlier in the playoffs than the team should have lost, and that was two years ago when they lost to rival Conner in the first round. The talent level definitely has started to pick back up after being down in talent for a few years starting in 2017. So I do think you will see much better results.

As for coaches keeping and losing their jobs. If you want to mention coaches keeping a job with a losing record. How many coaches in NKY have a state final appearance? Or even multiple regional championships like he has, and another regional championship appearances. As for NKY head coaches I believe there are only four other  current head coaches that have at least one regional championship on their resume, and only one other one that has multiple regional championships on their resume like him.  So yeah that resume is better than most coaches in NKY, and why he would deserve the chance to right the ship after having a few down seasons after 2017. He is definitely one of the better coaches in NKY.

So what you are saying his last good team was in 2015? Ok, so the past 8 years has been a rebuild and "right the ship" as you put it endeavor. And to use the argument of how many current coaches have a state final appearance, regional championship or multiple ones is perfect. There aren't because they are shown the door after given so many opportunities and failing. Time for a fresh start at Cooper, step back and do the AD thing, give a young upcoming coach a chance.

Well you got the last part right at least 🤣

Well, numbers don't lie. Overall record is 84-87 thru 15 seasons as the coach. He has had 8 losing seasons. Been sent home the 1st round of playoffs 7 times, 2nd round 2 times, 3rd round 1 time, 1x in semi's and 1x in the state finals. That state final team was 11 years ago, 11 years!! He has some really good talent in that time frame too. So, my opinion may be unpopular, but it is backed up with data. Can someone else tell me in the Northern Ky area where a coach has had an overall losing record over 15 years and still has the job? Again, the separation of AD and coach is a must. 🙂

  4. Cooper will have a lot of talent this year, but unfortunately, the same coach. If he wasn't the AD too, he would've been gone. Having a team every 6-7 years that does something, isn't good enough. Keep stacking the team, but won't matter. Just my unpopular opinion.

My guess on who they'll interview:

    1. Leighton Schrand - former Holy Cross player who walked on at X.  Currently on staff at HC.
    2. Tyler Bezold - former Holy Cross player, played at Kentucky Wesleyan and was an assistant there too I believe.  Does player development work at Griffin.
    3. Rob Detzel - currently the freshmen coach at Holy Cross, son is a 9th grader on the team.

Just my thoughts, but I think the whole child on the team can sway thoughts and emotions. Need to stay away from that. Just my opinion.

  6. I think the search really needs to avoid previous head coaches. I am thinking that they need a change of thinking in that spot. I do like the idea of McClendon though. He is very knowledgeable and demands respect. Unfortunately, from most recent years, the players have seemed to rule the roost. If not him, maybe a younger former player that can relate, but has some old school in him. It will be interesting to see who all applies for sure.

Not discrediting Newport or Ryle, just stating what 99.9% of people other than you, know for certain that CovCath is without doubt incredibly much better than those teams.

You and I both know that you know this as well, you’re not fooling anyone now matter how you’re trying to spin it, or trying to discredit me in the process. People see through it.

You and I both know too that even though Dixie has proved themselves to be a legit Top 5 team in the region, because you initially doubted this, you’re not willing to rethink it, or admit it, so previous to the regional tournament you flippantly referred to them as Top 8 as if all team were on equal status, which we all know just isn’t the case.

Can great underdog stories happen come tourney time? Sure thing.

Can a team like CovCath go down twice in a season that no one believed that they’d be even beaten once within the region?

Yes they did to another very good team, but who's kidding who here to make us believe that you believe that hypothetically with CovCath playing either Newport or Ryle that “you just never know”, or that you don’t see that there’s a pretty definite drop off in strength between certain teams within this year’s regional tournament?

Oh but you're the high road guy, and I discredited Newport and Ryle, right?

People see right through that BigRob.

Struck a nerve, lol. I love this!!

So you’re saying that if CovCath had played either Newport or Ryle. throw the books out because you just never know? Each and every team entering the Regional tournament in your mind were on an even playing field?

What I am saying is that they are kids and anything can happen. All the teams making to the region are good. Yes, some may be better than others, but they all are good. I wouldn't discredit Ryle or Newport, as you did. Unfortunately, Cov Cath played a team that was not afraid of them and knew how to play them. Tough draw, but I am sure they will be back next year. So let's all root for the 9th to win it all.

So none of the teams in your book previous to tonight's games would get a Top 4 billing?

What I am saying is throw all that out the window when it gets here. Sure they spent the year at or near the top, but as tonight shows, anything is possible. That is what is so great about NKY basketball. The teams are so good and on any given night can win. Putting numbers to teams just fuels the other teams. So it is what it is.
