  1. I only like a playoff when needed for Frosh. If one team stands alone undefeated (like last year) then what’s the point?

By the end of the season, the better players are finding their way onto the JV/Varsity teams. Many of which aren’t permitted to play, so technically it’s not the best players/teams anyways.

This year’s “bowl-like” format seems to be the best of both worlds. Allow a champion be crowned without having unnecessary first round blowouts.

However, if I coached a team that ran the table, I’d prefer those kids have a week or two of JV/Varsity experience over additional Frosh games.

If I'm Dixie, I lock up man to man, flood the box with defenders to stop the run and have a constant spy on Ryle's QB. Dixie has two very good corners capable of covering the WRs of Ryle. If the Dixie QB can run stay healthy this week and run the ball like he did  the first 3 quarters against Cooper, I think they have the upper hand. IMO Gregg > Verax.

Having said all of that, the Dixie coaching staff has got some work to do in the realm of game management. Wasted time in crucial situations along with the inability to get a play in in a timely manor cost them vs Cooper last week. Another thing they're going to need is a backup plan for Gregg not being able to run. Personally, I'd line up Rice in the backfield and run behind him. Dixie has the players to run a smashmouth run oriented offense in the absence of Gregg if they needed to.

Anyway, give me Dixie this week. 28-21

Logan Verax has 2258 passing yards, 68.7 comp %, 15 TD's, 6 INT. He leads 6A in passing yards, completions, and completion % among all starters. Ryle has played a tougher schedule and has wins over both Cooper and SK, who Dixie lost to.

I understand Gregg runs the ball too, but Verax was Ryle's leading rusher for weeks this year as well.

Gregg had a great season. I suspect this game will be very close, Verax > Gregg.

Wow! Ryle’s Defense won this heck of a game, good for them! Ryle’s offense was an absolute train wreck.

    Exciting high school football !

Train wreck is a great way to describe their offense. From the game prep, play designs, tempo, and play calls. Complete disaster.

With a good offense, they’d be dangerous.

You are making my point again.  Ryle and SK are no where close to competing with the good 6A teams and the others all have interesting parts to play in 5A.

Only making your point if you believe Cooper and Dixie are capable of pulling off an upset that would have any bearing on the 5A championship. I don’t think many around the state believe that.

Highlands rolled Dixie and were rolling Cooper when they took their foot off the gas. Good teams, but not championship caliber.

This, we are in lockstep. This game matters or at least could matter in 5A.  Ryle/SK is two teams playing for local bragging rights and nothing more.

So 5A #7 vs #10 playing for 2nd place matters more than 6A #9 vs #10 playing for a district championship? Lol

Again, none are real contenders for a state championship.

To each their own I guess.

Who beat who isn't in the consideration this is about which is a better game this week. And I agree the SK/Ryle is for more marbles... but outside of that this game is for who may play one or two more weeks. What I contest is that Cooper/Dixie has been extremely close the past two seasons, and the #2 and #3 place teams in their district and sister district will have more impact on who moves forward. Couple that with nobody outside of Ryle or SK really cares about this contest. I doubt very seriously folks in Louisville and Lexington would tune in to hear/see this game. But looking at the 5A rankings thread, a lot of folks from Owensboro and Lex have an interest in which team goes south, and which team has to travel north. I don't know how 859 makes money or if they need the ratings but IF it is a business decision, hands down the Cooper/Dixie tilt is the better draw.

I doubt anyone from Lex/Lou is that interested in Dixie/Cooper either, but I enjoy any game 859 does!

While this game is for a district championship, neither one of these teams may do much in the post-season. If we are honest, having a sister district in Louisville means generally you may get one, maybe two extra weeks of football. Big game for the two fanbases sure, but not much interest outside of that. The Cooper/Dixie draw is for #2 in their district, and has 5A playoff implications for this area, and for the state. Not to mention it is historically a very close game. 859 picked a better draw for their listener/viewership IMO.

I guess, but considering Ryle beat Cooper and SK beat Dixie in addition to this being for a district title, I think many would argue the Ryle/SK game is for more marbles.

Very doubtful Cooper or Dixie will have much impact on the state tournament. 2 solid teams, but firmly outside the top tier of 5A as is SK and Ryle.

1966 was SK's first year as a football school (2A R3 D1 - Boone Co., Campbell Co., Dixie, Highlands, Holmes, Newport, New Cath*, SK).

In 1992, its first year open, Ryle played a non district five game schedule. From '93-'94 they were in a different district than SK. (3A R2 D2 - Franklin Co., Lincoln Co., Oldham Co., Scott Co., South Oldham, Ryle, Woodford Co.).

1995 was the first year the two teams played and were in the same District (3A R3 D1 - Conner, Cov Cath, Dixie, Highlands, Holmes, Ryle, Scott, SK).

    * New Cath was "placed" in the District, but was not playing a full District schedule, and was not eligible for the postseason. The 'Breds were still playing a full slate of games across the river in the GCL.

    Great info!

I was referring to when they opened up as a school.

I'll also bite. You mean to say 3 players are enough to over come a 7 TD to zero score? Closer score than that, sure, but 7 TDs? Also Highlands and Beechwood played I believe twice in the early 2000s and it was quite evident who was the superior team.

Hard to tell, but again, Beechwood was without their best player when playing Highlands. I watched him play. He probably leads their team in both TD‘s and tackles if I had to guess.

Now you add Fryman, who without question is the best NKY Freshman, I think you have a really good game. I don’t think there are any 3 players from Highlands that could contain him.

Not taking anything away from Highlands squad. Very good team.

Ok, I'll bite.  In your opinion, how different would Highlands 48-0 win have been if this kid was playing in that game?

    50 points....lol.

Good point and I'm not sure. What I do know is he could single handedly be a major problem on both sides of the ball for any Freshman team. Also, wasn't 2 of Beechwood's best players out vs Highlands this year? Their receiver does most of the damage on offense and is a great defensive player too. I heard he was out.

With both of them on the field, it would be a fantastic game.

Quite the opposite, when looking ahead toward next year and the lost season for the 8th grade players as only one 8th grader sees the field for meaningful minutes.  When all freshman are healthy and playing, that one 8th graders action is drastically reduced.

You’re missing the point. Pulling the best 8th players improves this year’s freshman team. I’m not saying schools should do it, but as a coach, I’d rather assemble the best players from 2 classes than one.

  12. 29 minutes ago, FJ11 said:

That may be true, but keep in mind Beechwood does not have an 8th grade team.  Their 8th graders play on the freshman team.  So although wins/losses show this, I think they have some really good players coming up the ranks.

That is an advantage for Beechwood. Most teams best 8th graders would improve their Freshman team.

That stated, no NKY Freshman team could stop Fryman if he was playing…including Highlands.

This should be no surprise, Engler once again underperforms and wastes talent.

Year in and year out, and I’ll sing it to the mountain tops.

No reason Ryle shouldn’t dominate NKY year in and year out.

Very hard to disagree with this. After tonight’s performance, it certainly feels like he should save everyone the trouble and step down. Him and the rest of the staff. Ryle needs a fresh start.

We played both teams the two first games of the season. Highlands is bigger and has more team speed. Current size and athleticism is what I equate to talent.

For example, Giesler is significantly better at RB than the soph that Ryle starts that has an FCS offer. Maybe the younger guy ends up being better, but is not close to Giesler now.

Ryle did well against Highlands this year in the live scrimmage. Both their Sophomore and Junior classes beat Highlands as Frosh. Last year was a beat down and Ryle didn’t have 2 of their best players.

Hard to accept that they’re not as talented, but agree to disagree.

I don't think so either. And even if it was, people would still be trying to avoid sending their kids there even if their kids were flagged as needing to go there.

The thing that needs to be kept in mind is that public schools are designed and intended as educational/academic institutions, not necessarily be sports powers. So assembling schools and corresponding populations in the interest of building football powers probably isn't in the best interest of ALL students. And while sports are certainly part of the high school experience, they certainly shouldn't be the end-all goal for a public school system. Boone County chose to build more schools to accommodate the growing population over expansion to provide a better academic experience. Not only that it does also create more opportunity for more students in extracurricular activities. The reality is, that option probably is better for the population of Boone County as a whole, even if it means the football/sports teams might end up less competitive. I come from a school that is larger than any school in Kentucky...we had 70 players on our Freshman team and over 100 on the varsity roster. There were very good athletes who could have played at a small school that literally never saw the field in their 4-year career. I don't think a couple of super big schools in Boone County and a Spec Ed school would be the best option, even if they competed for and won state championships on a regular basis.

    Great post!
