Can you expand on that statement for those that were not there? Were they all called intentional by the officials?

15 is an overstatement.  It was prob 8.  Beechwood was purposefully leaning into Miller restricting his pathway requiring the ref to blow the whistle and send him to the line to try to steal a few possessions.  Hack a Shaq was a decent strategy but went on more than it needed, with the game in hand for the colonels.

Let's not forget that the Birds currently start 2 sophomores on varsity too.  If you watched any of the younger guys play it's clear that both teams are loaded with quality guards and wings.  If the CCH faithful want to keep their edge they better be hoping for an impactful big to find his way to Covington this off-season.

I don’t know much about the Highlands varsity squad this year other than their record indicates they are average at best.  Comparing sophomore contributors on an average team to sophomore leaders on a top team in the state seems like apples and oranges.

I do agree that if a big man does not find its way to “Covington” the edge/gap will close.

  3. Highlands has a nice younger group, but let’s not lose sight of the fact the two kids that have the ball in their hand prob 60-70% of the game at the varsity level for CCH are sophomores.  I do not believe Highlands has young varsity players who contribute at the level as the CCH sophomore class.  JV success does not equate to varsity success.   Throw in the potential of difference makers who transfer to CCH for the basketball program and I would not expect HHS to close the gap just because they won the 2024 Freshman and JV tournaments.

Really hoping Lorenzen gets a shot at QB.  From the limited looks he looks to be the real deal as both a runner and passer.

Was he not the back-up qb on the freshman team? And you have expectations of him starting varsity as a sophomore?  Am I missing something?

Guru, can you elaborate on what is going on in the Boone draw area and how the others you mention are different in significant ways?

My guess: the developing demographic in Boone Co driving the high free lunch statistic at Boone Co High is traditionally keen to the other type of football. I did not read every statistic quoted in this thread but I’d guess Boone Co High has a fairly high ESL population.

  6. Are we really labeling the greater Florence area the inner city?  Are the demographics in the school the same as they were 15 years ago? Absolutely not, and I agree there are some extreme lower class areas within the Boone Co High School district .  But I would not call essentially the entire area of Florence the inner city.  Still plenty of respectable middle class or higher areas within that school district.  Now, where those kids go to school may be a different conversation.

The daddy ball comments are getting so old already. The best players will play regardless and always have!

Agreed! If this is the daddy ball reaction now, people may lose their minds if/when the youngest starts as a freshman. He’s a player.

A few weeks ago, questioning Nolan’s playing time could be warranted.  However, if folks take off their vested interests glasses, Nolan has played really really well (with the exception of last night)!  My guess is he works harder than everyone else on that roster (he has to as he doesn’t have the ability of his older brothers) and his in game performance has not allowed anyone on the bench to steal his minutes.  That’s reality and folks that don’t see that and want to complain likely have a dog in the fight or a long time grudge with the staff.

That was some beautifully played basketball and a pleasure to watch, even with the loss; reminds me of the Oak Hill Academy game from a few years back. The Lakers are a great team.

I thought Harney looked really good tonight for the Colonels. Solid games by Hussey, Miller, and Ruthsatz too. Everything considered, I think Cov Cath played well and agree with The Double Deuce - a very solid result.

    * Steven Solano is 7'0". Colonels won the turnover battle 13-20; lost the rebounding one 40-17.

Love the way we hustled back into it before halftime. The Lakers stormed out again in the third, just scoring in bunches.

Size, quickness, skill - body control in the air by Lakers Jerry Easter, Melvin Bell, and Darius Adams is amazing. All four mentioned are D1 recruits - Adams and Solano are P5 talent thus far.

Does anyone know why their best player wasn’t in attendance?

I used to do this at Old Cardinal Stadium and it was great!  Paid one ticket and stayed all day!  Saw some great games.  All about the $$$$$$.  I'm sure UK charges them quite a bit.

Agree it’s all about the money.  Who gets concessions? From my perspective, I’m prob never going to sit through 2 or 3 football games in December barring super nice weather or crazy match ups.  What I would do if attending a specific game, is catch the 2nd half of the previous game or the 1st half of the next game.  In that case, I’m likely to spend at the concession out of necessity.   Would you rather get $30 out of the consumer because they spent a little at the concession on top of a single game ticket they exploited for 1.5 games? Or $17 for one game ticket?  Very few people are going to spend $17x2 or 3 for a ticket to watch multiple games. If you have a kid or two with you multiply that by another 2 or 3.

What I see here on BGP is nothing compared to what I see on Facebook.

As a Beechwood grad, former player, and former coach, I hated the uniforms.  We looked like Ludlow.  Please don't do it again Coach, horrible...

    Agreed!

Uniforms not necessary, did not look good, and were a waste of either  parents money or athletic booster/department money. If donated by a uniform provider, that donation could’ve been used in a much better place than Ft Mitchell.

They looked just like the uniforms U of L wore in their game yesterday.

Exactly .. bad.   It was gimmicky and a bad look.  Especially against an 0-10 opponent.  If you think you need that  extra motivation (as a17x state champion, I argue Beechwood does not) use it in the semifinals.   Programs with strong traditions don’t need gimmicks for motivation.   Can you imagine Alabama coming out in a black or grey uniform against Vanderbilt?

Yes and No. As long as they don’t go back to facing your own district in first two rounds of playoffs. They could possibly avoid playing Beechwood until the semi finals or even state title game with how the RPI dictates things after the second round. So if they build it right, they could become a top program and make deep runs every year even while being in the same district as Beechwood. However, I guess that’s for another thread lol.

If St Henry has success I don’t see it coming at Holy Cross’s expense.  My guess is it’s at the expense of the Boone Co public schools and grabbing the middle talent parochial school kids that may not see the field at CCH but good enough to compete in small school football.  It will be a tall order for the Cru to play with Beechwood in the near future.

Tayden is fabulous and will be. Cale Harris is fantastic and will be.  It will be very interesting to see what the Highlands staff does position wise with these two in the future.  I think many assume Rio will be a 2 year starter for the Birds but who knows how all 3 develop.  Great problem to have.

Also, don’t sleep on Highlands freshman Gabe Williams.  An amazing combination of strength and speed and is already returning varsity kickoffs for the Birds as a true freshman.  Mark it down, this kid will be a big time high school player.

Agreed .. Williams makes plays all over the field.  So many plays, the argument can be made he is the best player on that Highlands freshman team.

Lorenzen is the best freshman I’ve seen in a long long time. And I’ve watched lots of football.

So I find the claim of Fryman being leaps and bounds better, dubious at best.

Take a moment to watch the CCH / Beechwood varsity tape to see what Fryman is capable of. Specifically, the series where the Beechwood qb is not on the field due to an injury.  Nothing against Lorenzen, but no way 22 is capable of that.  Lorenzen is a fine player and will be great, but the speed and athleticism of Fryman is on a different level at this juncture. He is a weapon that opposing coaches likely scheme for at the varsity level as a freshman.   All in all, two great players who have the ability to impact the game differently.

That is an advantage for Beechwood. Most teams best 8th graders would improve their Freshman team.

Quite the opposite, when looking ahead toward next year and the lost season for the 8th grade players as only one 8th grader sees the field for meaningful minutes.  When all freshman are healthy and playing, that one 8th graders action is drastically reduced.

What you can do is make the other team’s offensive line have to work. Dixie used 2 defensive linemen the whole night with 4 linebackers (2 walked up), and 5 DBs. sent the house every play. Highlands would come to line see who they had and boom. You know why? Because 1 they are bigger upfront and 2 Dixie had 6 in box compared to highlands 7/8 in the box.

Lefts flip over to the offensive side.
You know the other team only gives up 65 yards rushing a game compared to 275.5 yards in the air. You come out and think the run going to work nope. When Dixie threw it, it was from one hash to the other side of the field past the numbers 5 yards down the field. That’s a far throw with no time to create any separation. Now when the middle of the field is open all night and you only throw it there 3 times ( 2 to the TE for 2TDs and 1 slant) that’s a problem.

Agreed .. those 35 yard passes to gain 5 yards are a recipe for disaster. Pick 6 written all over it.

Couldn’t agree more. I know there is drop off going into sophomore year, but they went from 50 freshmen to what, 27-28 sophomores. There were a lot of kids getting very few reps last year as freshmen, and the ones who played the bulk of the snaps, also played JV. So did those back end Frosh see the writing on the wall, and know that their JV reps would be given to the incoming freshmen? It doesn’t make sense to me at all.

Imagine being a freshman, who’s lucky to even get in the game because they leave the starters in til the 4th quarter regardless of the score. You play 1 quarter if you’re lucky and then see the kids in front of you playing 6-8 quarters a week and dress varsity. Doesn’t instill a lot of confidence or the feeling that they want you to stick around.

I hear similar activity going on at Beechwood. 8th graders play with the freshman team. The freshman team is really good with a tough schedule so the 8th graders don’t see the field other then mop up duty in the 4th quarter.  Most of the freshman play significant minutes at JV due to limited #s in the soph class and the junior class is the varsity core.  So many in the 9th grade class are getting 6 or 7 quarters of football each week and the 8th graders get about .5 quarter of on field play.

Seems silly from a development purpose for long term success.
