Just with Hayden and Fryman back, Beechwood is going to be a real tough out for anyone. That’s including Cov Cath, who’s a few classes bigger and imo will be contending again in 4A next year.

And Erdman, Cusic, Flaherty as well as the rest of the 18 returning starters. Both Fryman and Erdman both went 1000+ in receiving this season. Cusic had 700+. Flaherty flies under the radar ... but he had a solid year rushing and receiving this year as well.

There are some talented kids in the pipeline coming up. That combined with how the season ended should make for an interesting 2024 season.

Dang fellas. I had no idea everyone would get so defensive over the mention of covid hold back. I was simply sticking up for that year’s Mayfield team and saying that they had their hands full with that very experienced Beechwood team. I was simply stating that the Mayfield team that year wasn’t bad, the Beechwood team was just good. Hopefully Mayfield plays tenacious defense like this.

Stick up for Mayfield all you want, but get the facts straight. That Beechwood team had 1 5th year player, not several of them. You are sticking up for Mayfield, I’m sticking up for a Beechwood team that you are trying to diminish their accomplishment by acting as if it was tainted by an entire team of 5th year guys.

The Beechwood team 2 years ago was a product of the Covid hold back rule allowing kids to get an extra year. Several seniors stayed from the previous year state championship team. Mayfield had several under classmen hold back.  Can’t really compare those teams that year because that was an odd deal. This year’s game is going to come down to the line on both sides of the ball. I think Mayfield gets that advantage and I think they will get pressure on QB. They have the guys that can cover also, all over the field. Should be a good game, but I think Mayfield will just out athlete Beechwood. On defense and offense.

The 2021 Beechwood team had 1, 5th year senior, Cam Hergott. He was the only 5th year player on that team, and Mayfield has had quite a few players on their roster the last few years that took advantage of the COVID rule as well.

I was very impressed with Hensley........ Boley not so much.

I know this is strange ...but I agree with you.

How Hensley didn't get 50 carries ...and how there were a ton of times when Hensley wasn't even on the field. Criminal decision making. I can't begin to understand the logic.

Outplayed and outcoached ... so it probably wouldn't have mattered. Still baffling.

    1) So Johnson Central held Breathitt County's offense to 10 yards in their game?? Breathitt had almost 120 yards against Beechwood this past Friday. 10 yards? TEN??

    2) I'm shocked that Johnson Central allowed Dohn Community to have as many yards as they did.

    3) Cov Cath's defensive performance last week wasn't their best. I'm sure Coach Brown and company have been doing plenty to let the team know that and to correct mistakes.

    4) If I'm Coach Eviston, I may well be logging onto Hudl and studying both of the Boyd County games. Boyd County passed above their average in both games against Johnson Central, and they managed to cut down JC's scoring margin by 25 points in the rematch. 👀

    5) If I'm Coach Peck, I'm spending some time reviewing film from the Cov Cath/Highlands game. Highlands is the only team this season that had an above-average rushing game against Cov Cath.

Breathitt got 70 of those yards on an absolute fluke hand grenade pass on 3rd and long that was misplayed by a defender and tipped around and caught and the kid squirted out behind the defense for a huge gain.

Light rain early in the day. Overcast at night. Hope it downpours the whole game lol

No offense ...but you do realize that LCA is a running team this year, right? Not sure that helps Mayfield at all.

This isn't the same LCA team that gave up running the football last year... while they were gaining solid yardage all game against Mayfield.

I sense a lot of concern from Mayfield about Boley ....not near as much about the running back. Heck, Boley is even under center quite a bit this year.

If Mayfield overlooks Hensley for Boley ... its going to be a long night.

Lloyd suffered losses to Brossart, Holy Cross and Newport in 2020/2021. This year's schedule was made back then.  There was no reason to  schedule up two years ago.  They did drop Grant and picked up New Cath. Boone, Scott, Holmes and NCC should have been good games for them. Now that they have improved, they have decisions to make.

This years schedule was the first of a new 2 year schedule cycle. All of the games this year were just made this past off season, Lloyd could have chosen to schedule tougher, but chose to rollover the games they had played the previous years.

Newcath is 100% a program that expects to play for championships every year. One would consider that playing in 2 state semifinals in the past 3 season as competing to win championships.

Clearly Newcath felt the need to move on from the previous coaching staff for one reason or another. The two years prior to his arrival, Newcath went 7-6 and 6-6. Before he was named HC at Newcath they hadn't won a title game since the 2012-2013 season, I believe that was Caldwell County. In the past 5 years they've been to 4 regional finals, and 2 state semifinals, where they lost to eventual state champs Paintsville and Pikeville. If I'm not mistaken both those state games ended in double digit blow outs. And for what its worth, the Pikeville team from last year may have beaten several other teams playing for titles that day.

But this is about St. Henry, and their opportunity to build a great program. Not about coaches that are being unrealistically named potential candidates for the job.

We must be getting our data from different places ... the khsaa.org website has Lickert with 1 Semi final loss, 2 3rd round losses and 2 2nd round losses.

Wagner had 3 State Championship appearances (all losses) in his 1st 3 years, 1 3rd round loss and one 2nd round loss.

Which begs the thought ... is Dave Wagner a solid choice? Bring in Dave Schneider ... to run the offense? Those are the guys who played a large roll in their huge jump beginning in 2000.

These situations are always interesting to me. Inflated/incorrect stats for some guys, there is at least one guy mentioned who hasn't even coached before (who may be a good choice) ... I struggle to think anyone other than a coach with head coaching experience or a longtime assistant at a proven, historic winning program would be able to shorten the progress curve towards winning and being successful.

You need a coach who can manage expectations and winning ...who also knows how to deal with the biggest X-Factor: Parents. Throw that in with the fact that public school educators will shy away due to dollars, cents and lack of retirement ... you are looking for a miniature needle in a huge haystack.

Unless Kenny Collopy, up on the hill, decided he wanted the football program to go in a different direction than it currently has been going, I would find it extremely hard to believe that Coach Lickert would leave what he has built at Newcath on his own accord. This season has definitely not been without its challenges, but here we are again, looking at a newcath team primed to prove they can make another deep run in the playoffs.

Sorry -- can't help myself here. Just what, exactly, has Lickert built at NCC? No offense -- but aren't they a program that use to contend for state championships on a yearly basis?

No offense to his championship level coaching -- but he came into a program that was playing for championships. They have yet to play for a state championship since he arrived. Would he be good starting a new program from the ground up? Possibly. Let's not pretend he has furthered the path of NCC over the past few years.

Noel Rash would be a good hire.

He would also be a good hire at Conner, Trinity, Cincinnati St. X, Colerain, Little Sisters of the poor ... or any other school if he decided that he ever wanted to be a head coach again. No offense to Scott -- but if he wanted to continue to be a head coach ... he probably would have stayed where he was.

No offense to Scott ... but there are better jobs to be had if your name is Noel Rash.

I wonder if this will be the first time Highlands has opened their doors to allow someone else to use their field for a High School game.  I am glad we are able to accommodate Newport. A nice gesture to bring one of our own Ryan Hahn back home to allow him to use his old battlefield as home field.

Beechwood played NCC at Highlands in the 3rd round of the 2002 playoffs. Beechwood’s field was destroyed after playing Holy Cross in a quagmire in the 2nd round of the playoffs, and moved the game to Highlands since they were the only team up here that had field turf in 2002.

I’m confused also. Usually, the third round is the regional championship. I don’t know how Mayfield playing LCA or BW in the third round qualifies for a regional championship matchup.

I am assuming "BW' = Beechwood. If so ...the earliest one of those teams could see Beechwood is in the Semi-Finals. They are on the other side of the bracket.

I guess their plan was to just run off as much time as possible.  I'll have to go back and watch.

That was all they did, the ref in charge of the game clock was not even starting the 40 second clock until he had placed the ball and gotten back into position. The 40 second clock is suppose to start when the previous play is whistled dead. It was only a 4 man officiating crew and the back judge was pulling double duty, so in reality Bracken was getting almost a full minute of real clock time to waste in between every play. They snapped the ball at 1 second every play, so if their strategy was to limit possessions for Beechwood, it worked, Beechwood ran 27 plays of offense, but they really weren’t even attempting to run any kind of offense.

Camels where never close to beating SK! If the Camels scored it would have gave SK more time to score. All SK needed was 16 seconds to drive down the field!

Yeah, SK only needed an absolute fluke Hail Mary to win the game, but Campbell was never close to beating SK. By that logic Beechwood was never close to losing to SK because SK needed to kick an onside kick and take a couple heaves at the endzone to try and beat Beechwood. Can we just have a little bit of objectivity?

I picked Ryle because I believe their defense will be able to stymie the Pioneer offense more than the Pioneer defense will be able to stop the Raiders. I will be rooting for SK though because their win would help Beechwood in the long run but the SK-CC game gave me pause because Campbell is not very good and to win on a last second TD pass that was tipped and then hauled in.

Ryle had to go to Overtime to beat Campbell the week before, so using that as a measuring stick makes this SK/Ryle game a coin flip.

  16. One thing the state needs to look at with RPI is the number of district games. Teams are getting penalized for having to play 4 (LCA) and 5 (Beechwood) district games, while majority of the state is only playing 3.

IMO, they should apply RPI to an 8 game schedule. That way, everyone can drop two of their lowest RPI games from the formula and keep it pretty consistent across the board.
