  1. There could be an increase. The number of bigger, stronger, faster athletes have gone up over the years. Food, training year round....whatever. The big difference I see is the awareness of cuncused players. Before players would continue to play while they saw stars and everything was spinning. I was one of them. Now trainers and coaches are pulling kids out with any symptoms. And we are noticing it more because of the TIME kids are out going through protocal. As opposed to being in the next play or next week.

Good points. I think that may partially be due to the education these kids receive regarding head injuries. I can recall three separate times I blacked out in a game and didn't come out for more than a few plays. (One is caught on video where I get up and take two steps and almost fall over....on my way to the wrong huddle!)

  2. I fell like there have been more concussions these past two years than years past. Is this because they (coaches/trainers/doctors) are being more cautious with any kind of head injury, or is it because of the increased physicality of HS football in NKY? Are you seeing more concussions on your team this year or no?

  3. Most every year HHS has out of district students play football but the percentage compared to the students who live in FT has been small. Some have been very good players but again the percentage is small compared to the very good players who live in the city. Why did the out of district students choose to go the HHS. Many different reasons can be listed - Education, Parent choice, team success, friendship, opportunity, Coaching, etc.

Look at the percentage of male students that participate in the game on a Friday night. The school has mid 400 male students and approx 100 dress for the varsity game. Both Dale and Brian worked hard to establish platooning of the team. They not only platoon but do numerous subbing of positions. They also look to the Seniors for leadership and have high expectations of them. I am almost certain that compared to other schools HHS has a much higher percentage of male student body touching the field on Friday nights.

You can argue both sides of platooning. If they stop the platooning and limit the numbers I do not believe the results would have seen a significant difference last year. Might of helped with the score differential. This year they are in similar situations with the larger 6A schools and Cov Cath.

So as a coach do you blow up the platooning now and then try and get the buy-in and go back when the talent supports its use. How is this action good for the program over the long term? Would this action be taken just to placate the HHS individuals in the know.

I think BW will be given the time to succeed. Last year and this year are not the measure to use to judge his coaching ability - I believe the HHS individuals in the know understand this.

Platooning isdor the weak. You play who will win you games. When you're not winning games, you go back to who will win you games. Who cares how many kids touch the field. This isn't kindergarten. You don't get a participation trophy.

  4. I guess it is a little unfair to pick on Highlands tackling if you look at the RBs they've faced the past 3 weeks. Straight studs each with a great o line. It just drives me crazy to see a guy get touched by 8 players on the def and not get taken down. 11,45 and some other defenders are great but I saw many times where form tackling techniques were just not used.

The best tackler on our defense is #19, Nick Bowman LB. #27 Steiden tackles pretty well, as does #2 Armstrong (who admittedly missed a few last night)

  5. If they make a coaching change, make sure they name either Transplantcakeeater or Jack of all trades as the new coach. They already have all the answers.

Have you watched these games this year? Last year? I have been at every game. If you can't see that we continue to do the same old thing with the same players, you're blind.

Take last year's terrible team for example. No creativity. No misdirection. We likely had the worst secondary in NKY and continued to play the same kids. Outside of Bradley Greene, it was dismal play...yet they ran the same kids out there and put them in the same position. How many interceptions did we have as a team last year? 3. 3 picks all year. We eclipsed that in the first game this year by two. Did our defense score at all last year? I think I remember one.

How many underclassmen did they play? When you're losing the way they were losing, you shake it up and put in some underclassmen. Make the seniors know that they don't have their spot on lock down...light a fire. The team last year was completely devoid of emotion and intensity. I'll say they are a different team this year, at least in that respect.

This team is small, but Highlands has never been big bruisers. There's talent here.

  6. Unfortunately not, for the life of me I can't understand why. I can't call myself a "casual observer" of College football recruiting after experiencing D1 recruiting with my son. Ohio U, EKU and WKU coaches have asked me about him, I tell them they are missing the boat. He's got a 4.5 weighted GPA. Imagine what that would do to a D1 schools team GPA signing him. I'm convinced offers will come at some point during the season. EKU could get him easily. Both parents are Alumni.

That is astounding, seriously. The talent he has isn't common at all. He would make a great addition that could certainly contribute early to a program, especially on special teams. Would make one hell of a return man with the speed, vision, and slipperiness.

  7. Chiz is that good. Not fair to call the Birds bad tacklers for not being able to tackle him. They have just faced some stud RB's this season. Campbell Cty, Scott Cty, and Ryle.

Right. Pretty obvious no one has been able to tackle him this year.

Does he have any scholarship offers? Kid is tough.

  8. Highlands is lacking the big hogs on the offense and defensive line that can get push. I didn't see anyone driving their guys down field. Highlands looks young and not as muscular as teams in the past. I know they have some good freshman and I heard JV is doing good so hopefully in 2 years they can get back to winning 8 games a year.

At the same time, the JV last year won 7 or 8 games I believe...and plenty of those kids are starters now.

  9. Not sure what the fuss is about Moeller - they finished 4-6 last year and are projected to be the #6 playoff seed in their region (not state).

Moeller is a good team but this is not the Moeller of yore...

You realize their region is without question the toughest in the state, right? Many times the two best teams in the state meet in the R4 final, with the winner taking state.

  10. Several missed tackles tonight but credit the bruising running of Ryle. They have some nice speed and strength.

Outside of the horrible pass play called just before the half where Delegrange of Highlands picked it I'd say they played a pretty flawless game.

The Birds couldve thrown the ball every down to Vennaman and moved it better than mixing run plays. Just my opinion.

I agree completely. The run game for us wasn't happening at all. Wilson was not 100% and the sophomores weren't getting any ground either. Would have liked to see some more Veneman deep post and Wogan with an in or out under him.

  11. Also, I can't edit a post on the game update thread, but I'll post here.

The comment about play calling and keeping jobs was 100% uncalled for. It was a frustrating game, but I never should have made that comment. I apologize to any coaches, players, or fans of HHS that saw that.
