If he is there 5 years, I believe that exceeds the average tenure of a head football coach. I know Mayfield coaches have a much longer average tenure, but 5 years is above average state wide.

This is defintley and accurate statement, most programs are changing coaches every few years. In my personal opinion that is a huge factor in the success of the big red machine. I don't think the Morris's and Leahy deserve all the credit for Mayfield football success but they do deserve a very large part of it. Mayfield has had tremendous talent over the years and great football culture but I don't think they would be what they are today without Jack and Joe and how long they spent building the Mayfield tradition to new heights. If I were making the hire I would want to do my best to select another long term hire. I think Mayfield would want to avoid the situation of coaching changes every 3-5 years like a lot of teams.

  2. Right now I am working under the assumption that Hatchell is the guy and has been for some time whenever this day came. He is a qualified candidate and will do well. But I've got myself in to trouble for assuming before!

  3. Yeah Tony is 66 years old, I don think that is gonna happen. I've heard Rush Propst is available lol! No Mayfield will find the right guy and I assume it comes from within or somebody with very strong ties to the program. Would They have hired Mike Rogers? I wonder if he would have taken the Nelson County job had he known this was coming, surley Morris let him know.

  4. Well this leads to speculation about him taking another job (Daviess maybe) or if he is going to move into another teaching or admistrative role. I know a lot of young coaches that have spun their wheels as a young coach and have been ready to move out of coaching at a relatively young age to focus more time to family which is completley understandable. Good luck to Coach Clark in his future!

  5. Mayfield for having one of the most storied and accomplished programs in the nation, has a group of the most hyper senisitive fans. Not all Card fans are that way but a big group are. Who cares what a homer radio show says. Of course they are going to say those things on an Owenboro show. I don't undertsand getting so bent out of shape every time someone doesn't pick your team. Red helmet video is going to be pro Mayfield as you would expect. An OC radio show is going to hype up OC.

  6. We as fans fall into the trap of comparing past games from 10 weeks ago and looking at stats, etc. Past years scores are even crazier. I guess we have to have something to compare and argue about though lol. This is its own game and its for all the marbles. Mayfield is the favorite, but OC is more than capable of winning. Past games against common opponents will have nothing to do with the game.

  7. I think this will be a close game. I give Atwell that much respect. OC can absolutely not turn the ball over. The game is away from War Memorial, it’s on carpet which should make OC more comfortable. I doubt it, but will Mayfield play more tense this week? Knowing that they are the favorites, having not won at Kroger and a little drought by Mayfield standards. I’m sure the last 3 weeks have taken a physical and emotional toll on Mayfield  but I expect them to get the job done because that’s what they should do.

I like a lot of your posts but I disagree strongly with this one. Here's why:

    1. Do you think Beechwood wasn't capable of at least getting into field goal range in one minute? After all the big plays they had in the game? I watched this team all year. They can score in one play from anywhere on the field. Last week they had 3 TD's that were one play scores including a 53 yarder and a 71 yarder. If I went back and looked, I think I would find 20 times during the year that Beechwood scored a TD in 2 minutes or less including games against Dixie Heights, Simon Kenton and even the fantastic defense of Covington Catholic.

    2. Do you change how you played all year with one minute to go in the biggest game of the year? Beechwood's offense was an aggressive attacking passing game all year. Beechwood practices their 2 minute drill over and over and over. They ended their practice on Thanksgiving running their 2 minute drill. So you tell your team forget about that practice we do all the time? That is demoralizing to your own team. They prepared for that moment and that situation all year and now you say let's lay down here and forget all that hard work. No way!

    3. Read the game. If that game goes to overtime, who do you think has the advantage? I believe in my Tigers but if I am being objective based on how that game was going, Mayfield has the advantage. Beechwood had trouble stopping the run all night. I would not want the game riding on stopping Starks 4 times from 10 yards out. Beechwood had the momentum after that fumble. They had the opportunity to win in their hands. They had a QB that rarely makes mistakes. They trailed the entire game and this was their chance. That last drive was the only time all night that Mayfield thought they could lose the game because they know Beechwood's big strike passing attack could score any time.

No sir. No way in the world that was the wrong decision. Give Mayfield credit. They made the play. Put me in that situation again with this team and I am going for it again.

I respect your opinion. If there was closer to two minutes left I would have definitely been aggressive. Personally I would have been more conservative with 80 yards and less than a minute. Unfortunately Beechwood made the one mistake you couldn’t do. They went out swinging and made a great comeback. Hayden is an excellent QB.

I will say if I had Lance Harbor, I would have gone for the score late. With Johnny Moxon, not a chance.

  9. Congrats Mayfield!

IMO BW made a massive mistake just not taking it to overtime after a huge fumble from Mayfield. Mayfield makes you pay for mistakes so bad especially at home. This game reminded me of the ending of the Iowa and Nebraska game today.

I’ve seen so many high school coaches get ultra aggressive right at the end of the half or end of the game when things are going pretty good. Then a massive turnover happens that cost them a game or tons of momentum. The pros do it on tv with unbelievably talented QB’s and kickers that can hit from 50. In high school when you have 80 yards to go and less than a minute, just take it OT. BW had the momentum.

  10. The two kings of Kentucky small school football. All of these two know how to do is win. This one might end up with even more hype than last week IMO. I haven’t seen Beechwood play but I’ve seen their impressive passing game numbers. Do they have much of a running attack? In over the last 20 years, Murray and Danville are the only teams to leave Mayfield with a win in November. Until someone proves me wrong I’m going with The Cards.

    Mayfield 42

    Beechwood 28

  11. My takeaways:

    - LCA holds and cost them their first TD, and few plays later Boley throws a pick 6. That’s a 14 point swing that set the tone for the night.
    - Mayfield is a way better coached team.
    - LCA gave a brutal 3&15 fade route for a td at the worst time.

    - LCA defense was very unimpressive even with a huge d-line

    - both rb’s were great but by the end, Starks had the better game.

    - nobody wins at War Memorial except a select few.

    - what in the world does LCA do now and what does their coaching staff say? Guess they will need 20 new transfers.
