  1. I often hear this comment. I don't think anyone earns a position just by showing up, even in high school.

I agree no one deserves a position, they earn that position with hard work and hustle. HSBballfan24 said the young men were committed to the school and working hard TOGETHER to create team chemistry. He did not describe their dedicated participation as "just showing up". I think he meant, how does the rest of the team feel about playing with a teammate who has not exhibited a desire to want to be their teammate? Until he was forced to do so. Good luck to them all for a successful season.

  2. Sports,

I honestly don't know how old he is, but know he played last season at Adair County. The season prior to that he played on the BG team that won their first basketball State Championship. I assume he will play again at Adair, but not really sure. It would be worth the tank of gas to go see this young man play.

Hence, my confusion as to his age and class. I watched him play for your Purples via Internet coverage in the Sweet Sixteen. Has he played any amateur foreign league ball? If there is such a league? What city is Harmon's Kentucky hometown?

  3. Thanks for sharing. That was a good idea by Beechwood.

With the way things have been conducted, many are confused with what is happening with these bills.

A couple of reasons Beechwood is having school. Kentucky Association of Superintendents warned Thursday that it would not be advisable to use the pretext of taking another "SICK" day, only personal days should be used. Teachers may not have that many left. Beechwood is an excellent school, awards annually verify that, and parents want those teachers in their classrooms, NOT in Frankfort. No teacher wants it to look like an unlawful STRIKE, therefore the request that personal days be taken.

Does anyone know the numbers for teachers employed vs administrative plus non teacher support staff jobs by county or the state of Kentucky? What do teachers want an increase in school spending to pay for in this budget? Books, buses, after school and weekend meals for children, more security? Is there something specific?

  4. Depending on the level and subject a substitute might not be able to do the work. You’d be surprised how many adults have a hard time with math on the algebra level or above. How well do most people know history, music, art, chemistry, or literature? The subject can be a barrier and so can the developmental level of the students. Some people won’t sub on certain levels. Then take into account your sub pool for a Boone County would be very different to from the sub pool in say a much more rural county.

As far as lesson plans go I’m not aware of lesson plans being available to subs through a schools website. Maybe some school districts do this but most work off of sub folders. Lesson plans are typically not step by step instructions either. Lesson plans vary largely from district to district also.

Very educational because I did not realize how much or LITTLE was required to be a sub. How can someone, not educated for the teaching profession, be a sub if they have none of the required elements like psychology to deal with students? How much are subs paid per day, nothing firm, just a guess? And yes, my math skills are good enough to figure cubic inches in an engine for Papaw. How many college hours are required to sub? Just wondering since I know Kentucky requires a Master's Degree to remain in teaching. Definitely not asking for myself. I would not have the patience to deal with today's students.

With the technology of today, I thought lesson plans or a syllabus were prepared ahead and available on the school computer site for teachers. Especially for AP classes. Like I said this thread has been very educational as to how schools are operating.

  5. It's been mentioned there's a shortage of them, so that means many school districts are likely picking the bottom of the barrel.

And even if the sub is a good one — say a longtime retired educator or even somebody young who has a grounding in a particular study area while in college — they'll only be as good as what kind of preparation the teacher can provide them on what to do next within the course of their lesson plan. These folks are coming in cold, after all.

True, substitute teachers are coming in cold, but aren't lesson plans for a number of classes posted ahead of time on the teacher's computer? Not the same site used by students for homework assignments.

  6. Where do you get the stats to say a vast majority do not? I might be reading your statement wrong. I take your statement to mean a vast majority of people don’t call in sick unless they truly are sick? So a massive flu or some other pandemic hits every year the day after the Super Bowl? During March Madness? A number of companies have just went to PTO so there is no distinction between sick leave and vacation time. If PTO time can not be carried forward I believe you would see an increase of days taken as it gets closer to use or lose time. In the different jobs I have been apart of that has been the trend. If one cannot carry sick leave forward then yes people are more than likely will use those days. Feeling a little under the weather? Sure stay home.

Districts encouraged teachers not to use sick days for numerous reasons. Also it is a royal pain to be sick as a teacher due to prep work, falling behind and cleaning up the mess when they return.

Your last paragraph is slightly alarming. Are substitute teachers THAT bad, to create so much catch up work for you when you return?

  7. Didn't say it was a bad thing. And it's not Michigan State's legacy, but Izzo.

If this goes down we have had some major coaches have their names tarnished forever recently.

I don't want anyone tarnished with a broad brush. Maybe your " Major Coaches" should be more vigilant of their players. Don't Coaches and Recruiters tell parents, when they offer scholarships, they will take care of their child (young adult)?

  8. Your weather forecasts are the ones I trust and depend on for traveling. Your accuracy is uncanny and reminds me of my Dad when he would watch the animals and sky before working on our farms. I'll be happy to "Grandfather you in" as my meteorologist.

  9. Why would KY's lack of classification in basketball play any role in whether or not a kid decides to cross the river to attend a school?? That has zero affect on the academic or basketball experience one would have.

It was JUST a question. Why the hostile answer? Why not a real reason? Better academics for what career the young person is interested in? Better chance for a D1 scholarship to an elite basketball school with excellent graduation percentage? Excellent post graduate programs?

  10. But again it only impacts the handful of teams that go. No one is forcing anyone to buy tshirts or souvenirs an lodging really only impacts teams that advance or ones from all the way across the state. My point is that the AA is not a drain on the majority of teams anymore than regular season games are. I never see anyone complaining about out of town tourneys at Christmas Break being too expensive to attend.

Speaking of no one complaining about Christmas Break tournaments becoming too expensive. Coach Hinson was interviewed between games of the Sweet Sixteen Friday night, I think. He stated that BCHS would NOT be having their Holiday Tournament next season because teams and their followers not participating enough to cover the expenses. There are only so many basketball dollars to go around in parent's budgets. So I think your point, that the A and AA are no more expensive than season games, is not correct. You are correct, no one is forcing anyone to attend or purchase anything.

  11. It's not like they wouldn't be playing games those weeks if there was no AA. Most teams would still have at least 4 or 5 games over those couple of weeks. Only a handful have the expense of actually traveling to the AA.

But attending those games is more expensive than regular season games. Food, tshirts or souvenirs, tickets, overnight stays if it's a distance and possibly farther travel if not staying at tournament site. The last two could be a lot more expense, especially if a western Kentucky site is chosen.

  12. They are going to move the State Tournament up a week to avoid the conflict with the NCAA Tournament.

This will only further squeeze regular season scheduling. Will really impact All "A" tournament scheduling, if you play in the "A" State. You will have to find room for two weeks of tournament play within your more limited regular season schedule.

    Another topic for another thread.

And in 2019 you have the addition of the AA Tournament, more scheduling conflicts and more expenses for fans and their parents.

  13. The Clos kid can flat out play. He didn’t score much in the game against Oldham like he did in the UHA game but he did everything else a great player does, facilitated, took charges, rebounded and played outstanding defense, the small things that don’t show up in the stat book. I have really enjoyed watching him play this year and more importantly you can tell by the way he is on the court with always helping other players up off the floor that he is a fantastic kid as well. Plays with a lot of heart.

Everything in your post is the truth and I've known the young man forever. He is a wonderful hard working sincere young man. He leaves it all on the floor. Wish him the best of everything as he moves on to the next level.
