  1. Great jog Greenup co. Boys played great, and Ethan Coldiron pitched a gem. Had a no hitter till 5th, and only gave up the 1 hit. In a 5-0 win , giving Greenup back to back 1 hitters. Greenup Is now 16th region champion , and will play Lawrence Co at 1:30 on Monday in 1st round of Sweet 16. Greenup and Lawrence , split on season. The only bad part of the game was the Russell starter (name ?) beamed a Greenup batter 2 times, 1st in back and 2nd in head. And it was all because the GC batter hit a home run off him , in district championship game. The GC batter didn't show him up ,after homer. It was very obvious , he didn't come close to hitting any on else. I don't know for sure Russell coach new what was going on, but it was very obvious to GC, and GC fans. That was very bush league. And he hurt his team because that GC batter scored both times. So pitcher , guess you got him back. He's fine, and all you did is cost your team run's. Thanks for helping Greenup win!!!!!

The same Russell pitcher actually hit him in his next at bat in the District Championship as well. So after hitting the HR, he plunked him all 3 times he faced him between the District and Regional Championship games.

  2. Your right, the angles and the quality on Usteam isn't great, but you can take a camera that has zoom and slow motion capabilities and then video the plays off your computer screen to see these calls were wrong. One call was in the 1st inning, a GC runner was stealing 3rd base and was called out. This one is not on the Ustream video that is on-line, you'll have to take my word for that one that it was wrong. The Ustream guy replayed it on his computer with the other camera angle and videoed it on his phone like I mentioned above and I've seen that video showing ump missed it. It was a bang / bang play but GC runner was safe. The second call was in top of the 2nd inning, GC fielder fielded then dropped a ground ball right at 2nd base but picks it up off the ground and has ball all the way past his hip before runner touches 2nd base - the runner didn't even slide so it makes it even easier to see he was clearly out - this play was a force play. I thought this one was pretty obvious watching it live. The third one was in bottom of 5th inning GC runner tagged up from 1st base on a fly ball to left CF, throw is high, runner slides into the bag well before the tag. This one was the most obvious of them all in real life but the hardest to see on the video unless you zoom in because the catcher somewhat blocks the pic a little and the Russell field fields it on the bag with is back to the camera. Radio announcer even went crazy on that one. I believe the ump thought it was a force out and not a tag play as it would have been a bang/bang play if it was a force out but definitely not bang/bang on a tag play.

  3. In the last two Russell games how many times has he been on the field? All that isn't necessary. He does a good job with kids. They play hard and in his program they improve. Hats off to him for that, you don't see that in some places who claim to have a program. Too many times I have walked away from a game and thought he needs to realize there is no entertainment value to his antics, people are there to watch the kids.

The first game your referencing, (Russell @ GC) Greg was on the field because GC used 5 pitchers in a 7 inning game. Monday he was on the field because GC had 5 errors, his pitcher walked back to back batters, and the 3rd base umpire made 3 very obvious missed calls (which by the way, the Ustream video system at GC confirmed they were all bad calls against GC). GC also has 3 Freshmen and 2 Sophmores that start every game for Greg so a little extra communication and coaching may be necessary to help his team succeed.

  4. Greenup Co has 2 very good Freshmen in Gage Hughes and Kyle Gammons. They play SS and 2B respectively so the middle infield for GC will be solid for the next 3 years. Both have great range, only a handful of errors each and well above average arms for Freshmen.

Gammons hits in the lead off spot. He hits the ball well to all fields, has a very high on-base percentage and has tremendous speed with several stolen bases and runs scored. Hughes bats in the 3 spot, he's a switch hitter, has a high batting average (upper .300's), leads the team in RBI's and rarely strikes out.

Gammons also has become a go to guy late in games as a closer for GC. I believe he finished regular season with a 4-0 record with 4 saves this year. Hughes hasn't pitched much this year but when he has he's done well also with a low to mid 80's fastball.

Keep an eye out on these two in the near future as they are both having a lot of success as Freshmen while playing one of the toughest schedules of any team in the state.

  5. I always enjoyed reading the Articles written in the basketball forum about each Region. I know KY is a basketball state but there is also some good baseball across the state as well. Is there a reason why there is no weekly or bi-weekly recap by Region for baseball here on BGP? Not complaining, just asking because I enjoyed the ones in basketball and would like to see this for baseball as well.

  6. Well, I was wrong in predicting that Tristan Downing would pitch for Greenup Co last night vs Fleming Co. Instead GC started Freshman Kyle Gammon. I believe it was Kyle's first start of his HS career. What a time to get your first HS start, trying to get your team alone in the KHSAA record books. Kyle pitched well but the shutout streak was over just 2 batters into the game. The FC lead off batter hit a single to LF followed by a double in the gap by the FC #2 hitter to score the FC player from 1st base. The kid who hit the double ended up scoring in the 1st inning as well but GC went on to win 19-2. The 2 hits from the first two batters mentioned above were the only 2 hits that Fleming Co had the entire game so pitching and defense was still very strong for GC.

  7. Here is a clip from Ashland Daily Independent about Greenup Co tying the record:

They’re not the 1995 Atlanta Braves’ starting pitchers, even though Greenup County head coach Greg Logan likened Christian Wireman to a “right-handed Tom Glavine.”

Nonetheless, the Musketeers’ five are becoming quite a force, it seems, in the area.

The shutout string reached five over the weekend, putting Greenup County in a tie with Madisonville-North Hopkins (2001) and Eastern (2005) for the best such streak in the KHSAA record book. The Musketeers are scheduled to go for No. 6 tonight at home against Fleming County.

So, what is Greenup County’s 2015 version of Greg Maddux, Glavine, John Smoltz, Steve Avery and Kent Mercker?

Tristan Downing, Jaxon Keeton, Ethan Coldiron, Zach Hayden and Wireman each tossed complete, no-run outings since Tuesday. Only two of the five were five-frame games, which puts the current scoreless innings streak at 31 — during which time Greenup County has committed only one error.

Tristan Downing pitched last Tuesday vs Raceland for GC so I'd assume he will be pitching tonight against Fleming Co since the other 4 have all pitched since Thursday last week. I know defense plays a lot in this record as well but with the youth of these guys, Downing and Keeton being Sophmores and Coldiron, Hayden, and Wiremean being Juniors, if they break the record tonight that would be an amazing accomplishment, at least IMO...

  8. I have no issues with the Ashland Admin's choice for coach, it just seems very ironic that they would fire Biggs and re-hire someone he mentored for several years. If they were truly looking to go another direction with their program why wouldn't they go outside to find that person that would bring a different approach to the game and not hire someone who was just mentored (trained) by the guy they just fired. And yes, I know they are 2 separate coaches, not clones. It just doesn't make much sense to me....
