  1. 15th Region Overview (JC still the team to beat): Fueled by the greatest margin of victory in 15th Region Tournament History, (94 combined points over 3 games) Johnson Central claimed its 3rd consecutive 15th Region title during the 2013-14 season (8th in School History) in route to an elite 8 appearance at Rupp Arena. JC opened last years’ regional tournament play beating East Ridge 62-45, then Prestonsburg 92-40, and finally Shelby Valley 81-56 (leading 41-12 at half time). During the Golden Eagles 3 year run they are 54-7 against 15th Region opponents with 5 of the 7 losses coming against Sheldon Clark. For the first time in two years, graduation has affected the Eagles starting line-up. Three Time All-State Selection Shane Hall (2nd in KHSAA History in career blocks, 7th in career FT Attempts, 15th in career FT made, 19th in career rebounds, 220 Career Dunks, 5 Career Triple Doubles, 71 Career Double-Doubles) and 2014 15th Region Tournament MVP Slade McPeek (school record holder for steals in a career) will be missing from Head Coach Tommy McKenzie’s line-up as we tip off the season. The Golden Eagles also lost key reserves Nick McKenzie, Braxton Hensley, and Tyler Compton to graduation. Although the loss of these players hurt, the stable is still full for Johnson Central as they return a trio of starters that are undefeated in 15th Region Tournament play. Experience matters and with 3 returning starters, 2 of the top 5 players in the region, and 5 seniors to place in your projected starting line-up, it is clear to see that Johnson Central is the favorite to cut down the nets in March for the 4th consecutive year. Johnson Central may be the favorite, but that means very little come tournament time and the rest of the region knows this. With strong summer showings, transfers/foreign exchange students, and coaching changes, the 15th Region title could go to a handful of teams. Sheldon Clark, Lawrence County, and Shelby Valley all have the talent to end JC’s reign and stake their claim as kings of the 15th Region. Teams such as Prestonsburg, Paintsville, Magoffin County, Pikeville and East Ridge could make some noise this March as well. We can’t wait to see how the season play’s out as it should be an exciting year for basketball in the Mountains. 15th Region – Team Rankings 1. Johnson Central (26-7): The 2013-14 Season was a record breaking year for the Golden Eagles. Coming off of their 4th consecutive 20 win season, JC saw Slade McPeek break the school’s All-Time Steals record (Mitchell Coleman 2000), Shane Hall break the school’s All-Time rebounding (Mike Castle 1970), shot blocking (Howard Wallen 1970), Double-Double (Mike Castle 1970), and triple double (Nick Music 2005) record (just to name a few), Head Coach Tommy McKenzie break legendary Coach Wendell Wallen’s All- Time wins record (both regular season and post season), a school record run of winning that saw JC win 22 of 23 games going into the Elite 8 game v. Scott County and Braxton Blair becoming the 23rd member of the 1,000 point club. The 2014-15 season should see more of the same with four year starting point guard Braxton Blair just 78 assist away from breaking Terry Branham’s (1979) School record of 428 assist. Three year starter Kyle Gullett is just 104 points away from becoming the 24th member of the 1,000 point club and has been very close to the school’s first recorded 5x5 (at least 5 of every measurable stat in a single game). Dalton Adkins (pound for pound one of the best all-around athletes in the school) and Truman Salyer (a 6’5’’ physical force in the middle with a great outside shot) could also reach the 1,000 point club with big years. Patrick Rice will likely round out the starting line-up for the Golden Eagles and is a highly cerebral player who’s main focus will be defense, rebounding, and passing. Johnson Central has had control of the region for 3 consecutive years and is trying to become only the 3rd Team to win 4 consecutive 15th Region crowns (Inez 1934-37: Paintsville 1995-98). This will not be an easy task after losing Mr. Basketball finalist Shane Hall and 15th Region Tournament MVP Slade McPeek from your starting line-up, but Head Coach Tommy McKenzie has found a way to reload every year and this year is no different. The Golden Eagles will be led by a projected 5 seniors in their starting line-up who have over 300 combine starts in their career and an impressive 54-7 record against 15th Region opponents. With newcomers such as Mason Blair (led the team in scoring this summer) and Josh Hitchcock providing long range shooting, Cole Crace providing defensive intensity and offensive slashing from the wing and big man Tyler Pack patrolling the middle, the Golden Eagles will have depth at key positions and increased shooting over last years’ squad. Look for JC to be much more fluid on offense this year with lots of motion and ball movement while retaining the defensive pressure and intensity Coach McKenzie is known for. The Golden Eagles play in the toughest district in the region and thus will not have to travel far to find stiff competition. Compiling a summer record of 24-3 and having experience and talent at each position, JC is still the favorite in the 15th Region. Key Losses: Shane Hall (17.4 ppg 10.7 rpg 4.73 bpg), Slade McPeek (8.9 ppg 4.3 rpg 3.03 spg), Braxton Hensley (2.0 ppg 1.0 rbg), Nick McKenzie (2.0 ppg 1.0 rbg), Tyler Compton (1.0 ppg 0.5 rpg) Key Returning: Kyle Gullett Sr. 6’7’’ (15.3 ppg 4.9 rpg 2.09 bpg), Braxton Blair Sr. 6’0’’ (9.2 ppg 4.9 apg 3.5 rbg) Dalton Adkins Sr. 5’10’’ (6.0 ppg 1.39 spg), Truman Salyer Sr. 6’5’’ (6.6 ppg 3.6 rpg), Patrick Rice Sr. 6’2’’ (1.2 ppg 2.8 rpg) Newcomers to watch: Mason Blair So. 6’0’’ (Four 30 point games this summer), Josh Hitchcock Jr. 6’3’’,Cole Crace So. 6’0’’, Tyler Pack Jr. 6’5’’ Schedule (Subject to Change): 11/22 Boyd County (Scrimmage), 11/29 Covington Holmes (Scrimmage), 12/2 @ Greenup County, 12/4 Breathitt County, 12/6 @ Jackson County, 12/9 @ Perry Central, 12/11 @ Sheldon Clark, 12/13 Rowan County @ Boyd County, 12/16 Shelby Valley, 12/19 Clark County @ Rowan County, 12/20 Dixie Heights @ Rowan County, 12/20 Montgomery County @ Rowan County, 12/27 Warren Central @ Cumberland Classic, 12/28 -12/30 TBD (Tournament), 1/2 @ Magoffin County, 1/5 Pike Central, 1/6 @ East Ridge, 1/8 Belfry, 1/13 @ Paintsville, 1/17 Pikeville, 1/20 Lawrence County, 1/22 Sheldon Clark, 1/24 @ Breathitt County, 1/27 Magoffin County, 2/5 Paintsville, 2/10 @ Pike Central, 2/12 @ Ashland, 2/14 @ North Hardin, 2/16 @ Lee County, 2/17 Betsy Layne, 2/23 57th District Tournament. 2. Sheldon Clark (19-7):Head Coach Frankie Smith and the Sheldon Clark Cardinals are loaded with talent this year and a legitimate contender to take home the 15th Region Crown. After a tremendous season, the cards ended the 2013-14 campaign with a disappointing exit in the 57th District Tournament at the hands of Lawrence County (54-60), but look poise to return to the form that took them to the 15th Championship game during the 2012-13 season. The Cards return two of the top 5 players in the Region in Senior PG Chase Parsley and one of the state’s top sophomores in SF Dylan James. The dynamic duo has been called upon to do it all for Coach Smith the past two seasons, but this year they can expect help from a much improved roster that includes senior transfer SG Caleb Sturgill from Tug Valley,WV and a 6’7’’ junior foreign exchange student C Marvin Albrecht from Germany (Eligibility Unknown at this time). Sturgill can handle the ball, has a nice mid-range game to compliment the outside shooting of Parsley and James, and should provide a much need 3rd option for Coach Smith. Albrecht is an athletic big man that can run the floor, plays about the rim, and will provide backline protection that the Cards have not seen since the departure of Justin Johnson. Throw in Trevor Blackburn and Eric Sartin for senior leadership, a sharp shooting up and coming wing in Ethan Osborne, and big man back up with starting experience in Heath Maynard and you have a team capable of making a deep run in March. Sheldon Clark will compete with Johnson Central for both the 57th District and 15th Region crowns this year and have not shown any signs of weakness against them in recent meetings (Handing JC its only 15th Region loss last season and beating them 5 times over the past 3 years: 5-5 overall against JC since the 2011-12 season). Look for Coach Smith to change his style according to game situation and opponent, but regardless Sheldon Clark will play a controlled game, taking what the defense gives them. Expectations are high in Martin County and it should be an exciting season for the Cardinals. Key Losses: None Key Returning: Chase Parsley Sr. 5’11’ (18.9 ppg 2.8 apg), Dylan James Soph. 6’4’’ (18.1 ppg 8.6 rpg) Newcomers to watch: Caleb Sturgill Sr. 6’1’’(Tug Valley Transfer), Marvin Albrecht Jr. 6’7’’ (German Foreign Exchange Student), Ethan Osborne Soph. 6’3’’ Schedule (Subject to Change): 12/5 @ Pike Central, 12/11 Johnson Central, 12/13 Prestonsburg, 12/16 @ Pikeville, 12/23 Paintsville, 12/27 June Buchanan @ Belfry, 1/13 @ Betsy Layne, 1/15 @ Breathitt County, 1/20 Magoffin County, 1/22 @ Johnson Central, 1/24 Greenup County, 1/27 Breathitt County, 1/29 @ Paintsville, 2/6 @ Phelps, 2/7 @ Belfry, 2/9 Lawrence County, 2/10 Shelby Valley, 2/13 @ Magoffin County, 2/17 @ Knott Central, 2/23 57th District Tournament. 3. Lawrence County (21-11):The wildly successful, former LC Head Coach, Josh Cook has departed for Mercer County, but has left new Head Coach and Louisa native Travis York with a stable of thoroughbreds that are coming off from back-to-back 20 win seasons (First back-to-back 20 win seasons since Head Coach Randy Anderson led Lawrence County to a 57th District Title and regional semi-final appearance in 2010). After making it all the way to the Regional Semi Final Game last season (Loss 60-72 v. Shelby Valley) LC looks cut down the nets come March. The Bulldogs boast a starting line-up that has not changed in 3 years, will likely have 5 players that average double digits, and still has no major minutes going to any Seniors on the squad. LC will be paced by Junior PG Austin Chaffins, Junior SG Robert Dalton, Sophomore SF Timmy Dalton, Junior SG Brandon Richardson, and Junior Forward Grant Kiser. One of the most athletic teams in the state, LC plays small and fast and every player is a threat from the 3 point line. The Dalton Brothers are both explosive athletes that play well above the rim and get a few highlight dunks each game (They will also shoulder most of the rebounding load for the Bulldogs this year). Chaffins is the engine that makes the team go. He has a quick spin move that allows him break pressure defense and get into the front court and can handle the ball efficiently with both hands. Chaffins looks to get his teammates going early, but make no mistake, he can score as well (30 points in an OT loss to Johnson Central in the 57th District Tournament Championship game last season). Brandon Richardson is lights out beyond the 3-point line and a much improved defender from last season. Richardson can break a game open quickly if not accounted for, shooting 35% from behind the arc. Grant Kiser is the do-it-all player LC needs. He sets screens, guards the opposing teams most physical player, and looks to get to the corner for the 3 or mid-range jumper. Collectively Lawrence County has a tremendous starting 5 that will all likely reach the 1,000 point club by career’s end, but very little bench support. Last season, when LC found its self in early foul trouble, a drop in production and intensity could be seen when the bench was called upon. It will be interesting to see how Coach York approaches this situation in his first year at the helm. Junior 6’4’’ Center Josh Ratliff came off the bench last season and provided an inside presence for LC and looks to do so again this season. If he can provide quality production for LC, it might be the key piece to making it to Rupp Arena. LC also saw minutes from Sophomore Guard Shawn Moore and Junior Forward Matt Ratliff last season, but in a limited role. Lawrence County plays small, but makes up for it with superb athletes at each position. They can all shoot, pass and dribble, like to press and play fast, and can beat anyone in the state if they are on their game. In short, they are fun to watch. It should be an exciting year for the Bulldogs as they have moved into the 60th District and are a real contender to bring home the 15th Region crown this season. Key Losses: None Key Returning: Robert Dalton Jr. 6’3’’ (14.5 ppg 6.3 rpg), Timmy Dalton Soph 6’3’’ (15.0 ppg 6.0 rpg), Austin Chaffins Jr. 6’0’’ (11.5 ppg 4.1 rpg) Brandon Richardson Jr. 6’1’’ (13.8 ppg 5.7 rpg) Grant Kiser Jr. 6’3’’ (8.8 ppg 4.1 rpg) Newcomers to watch: Josh Ratliff Jr. 6’4’’ (2.1 ppg 2.4 rpg) Schedule (Subject to Change): 12/2 East Carter, 12/6 Conner @ Grant County, 12/11 Breathitt County, 12/12 @ Raceland, 12/16 West Carter, 12/20 Lafayette, 12/27 Lee County @ Pikeville, 1/3 Clark County, 1/13 Pike Central, 1/15 @ Belfry, 1/16 Phelps, 1/20 @ Johnson Central, 1/22 Russell, 1/27 @ Pike Central, 1/30 @ Phelps, 1/31 @ Perry Central, 2/3 Boyd County, 2/5 Belfry, 2/7 Williamsburg, 2/9 @ Sheldon Clark, 2/11 South Floyd, 2/13 @ Pikeville 4. Shelby Valley (20-11): The Shelby Valley Wildcats returned to their championship form last season, winning the 59th District and making it all the way to the Regional Championship game before running into the buzz saw that is Johnson Central (Losing 56-81). Jim Hicks returns to the sidelines for his second year with Valley and after coming off a regional runner-up finish looks to take home the title in the 2014-15 season. The loss of All Region selection 6’4’’ Tyler Carr and long-time big man 6’10’’ Cody Belter will hurt the Wildcats, but there is plenty of talent and tradition still coming from the Dorton/Virgie basketball pipeline. Shelby Valley will be led by Seniors Dalton Richardson, Andrew Newsome, and Corey Hamilton. Richardson is a do-it-all powerful guard that can shoot from deep and handle the ball. His experience and basketball IQ are high and he always seems to be making the right play. Newsome is a physical big man with good hands and a soft touch 12 feet and in. Hamilton has the knack for blowing games open with his streaky outside shooting and should provide pressure and ball handing for Coach Hicks in the back court. Valley also returns Junior Forward Hunter Swindall. An athletic four man and possibly the most underrated player in the region. He has shown the ability to score in a variety of ways and shoots a high percentage from the charity stripe. Look for more sets to be catered to Swindall’s skill set this upcoming season. During the offseason, Valley received a transfer from East Ridge in Senior G Michael Fields. Fields, a starter for Coach Randy McCoy at East Ridge, will likely step into the same role at Shelby Valley and take the minutes vacated by Tyler Carr. It is still unclear what his role will be on the team, but Fields will undoubtedly help SV in their pursuit for the 15th Region Crown. Look for Shelby Valley to play a controlled, fast game. Coach Hicks is known for his ability wear down opposing teams by picking at their weaknesses and we should expect nothing less this season. Valley looks to push when the opportunity presents its self, but has the discipline to slow down the game and get into a set when nothing is there. In short, they don’t beat themselves. Expectations are always high for the former state champions and we should see Shelby Valley have yet another excellent year. Don’t be surprised to see them in Rupp Arena come March. Key Losses: Tyler Carr (19.2 ppg 4.2 rpg), Cody Belter (7.6 ppg 5.8 rpb) Key Returning: Hunter Swindall Jr. 6’4’’ (9.5 ppg 3.5 rpg), Andrew Newsome Sr. 6’4’’ (9.1 ppg 7.2 rpg), Dalton Richardson Sr. 5’11’ (8.6 ppg 3.4 rpg) Corey Hamilton Sr. 5’11’’ (6.9 ppg 1.6 rpg) Newcomers to watch: Michael Fields Sr. 5’11’’ (Transfer from East Ridge), Lamont Wright Soph 6’3’’ (3.0 ppg 1 rpg) Schedule (Subject to Change): 12/1 South Floyd, 12/6 @ Lee County, 12/12 @ Jenkins, 12/13 Breathitt County, 12/16 @ Johnson Central, 12/18-12/20 Gatlinburg-Pittman Invitational, 12/27 Paintsville @ Pikeville Invitational, 12/27-12/30 Pikeville Invitational, 1/3 Phelps (All A Classic), 1/5 Belfry, 1/10 @ Breathitt County, 1/13 @ Pikeville, 1/16 East Ridge, 1/17 Perry Central, 1/20 Betsy Layne, 1/22-1/24 Toyota Classic, 1/27 Pikeville, 1/30 Prestonsburg, 2/2 @ Magoffin County, 2/6 @ East Ridge, 2/10 @ Sheldon Clark, 2/13 Jenkins, 2/18 Pike Central, 2/20 Magoffin County. 5. Pikeville (11-18): Head Coach Bart Williams (former Johnson Central Standout and University of Pikeville’s All Time leading scorer) takes to the sidelines to lead the Panthers for the 10th consecutive season (longest current continuous tenure at any school in the 15th Region – Paintsville Head Coach Bill Mike Runyon had a break in coaching thus breaking his streak). The 2013-14 Season saw growing pains for the Panthers as they opened the season on a 7 game losing streak and were eventually eliminated in 59th District play by East Ridge (52-54). Pikeville is much improved this season and looks to make a push at the 59th District title and 15th Region Title this March. The Panthers will be led by Senior PF Zach Huffman. Huffman is one of the most improved players in the region and has shown ability to score down low, dominate the glass, and anchor the front line against opposing post players. Huffman can play above the rim and has excellent timing on his shot blocking. Look for much of the offense to go through him this season. If the big man can stay out of foul trouble he has the potential to have an explosive season. Alongside Huffman will be Junior guards Blaine May and Ryder Johnson. Both guards work as interchangeable pieces for Coach Williams, but look for Johnson to handle the ball and May to spot up or run off screens more often than not. Dalton Meade (younger brother of former Betsy Layne Standout Dylan Meade) is going to play for Pikeville this upcoming season as well. During the summer session, Dalton transferred to Pikeville to play for Coach Williams and will help with his outside shooting, ball handling ability, and high basketball IQ. Zach Hamilton, Keegan Williams and Drew Walters will see key minutes this season as they work to define their roles on this years squad. Don’t expect to see Pikeville with a losing record this year as they will be well coached and a tough out for anyone come tournament time. Key Losses: Jacob Hamilton, Gaige Ray Key Returning: Blaine May Jr. 6’0’’ (12.9 ppg), Zach Huffman Sr. 6’5’’ (12.6 ppg 8.4 rpg) Ryder Johnson Jr. 5’11’’ (3.7 ppg) Newcomers to watch: Zach Hamilton Fr. 6’5’’, Keegan Williams Jr., Drew Walters Sr. (2 ppg) Dalton Meade Jr. 6’0’’ (transfer from Betsy Layne)(5.7 ppg 3.4 rpg) Schedule (Subject to Change): 12/5 Somerset @ Berea, 12/6 TBA @ Berea, 12/9 Betsy Layne, 12/12 Magoffin County, 12/13 Ashland @ Boyd County, 12/16 Sheldon Clark, 12/20 Boyd County @ Raceland, 12/21-12/22 TBA @ Raceland, 12/27 Phelps, 12/28-12/30 TBA Pikeville Invitational, 1/2 @ Belfry, 1/3 Lewis County @ Russell, 1/6 All A Classic, 1/10 Pike Central, 1/13 Shelby Valley, 1/17 @ Johnson Central, 1/20 Harlan County, 1/22 @ East Ridge, 1/27 @ Shelby Valley, 1/30 @ Allen Central, 1/31 Greenup County, 2/3 @ Prestonsburg, 2/10 East Ridge, 2/13 Lawrence County, 2/14 @ Pike Central, 2/19 Paintsville 6. Magoffin County (15-13): Expectations are high this year for the Magoffin County Hornets as they return a very talented team. Head Coach and Magoffin County native Robbie Russell enters his third season with the Hornets and looks to make a push into the regional tournament for the first time since the 2006-07 season. Don’t let the lack of 15th Region Tournament appearances fool you though as Magoffin County has had a strong program for the last 5 years but struggled to get out of the top heavy, 5 Team, 57th District. The 57th District is again the toughest in the region, possessing the regions two favorites, but with the departure of Lawrence County to the 60th District, winning one game will guarantee you a ticket to East KY EXPO Center and the 15th Region Tournament (in the past if you were the 4 or 5 seed you had to win two games to make regions, which was tough when 4 of the top 5 teams in the region were in your district year after year). Magoffin County lost big man Corey Pitts to graduation, but return experience and talent and every position. The Hornets will be paced by Sophomore Trenton Russell (16.1 ppg 7.6 rpg). A natural scorer who is on pace to break the school’s all-time scoring mark, Russell plays the SF/Wing position for the Hornets, can shoot the three effectively, and is an extremely aggressive rebounder (especially on the offensive glass). Russell is also an underrated defender who will be called upon to handle the ball from time to time. Running alongside Russell on the opposite wing will be Senior SG/SF Jeffrey Bolen (14.9 ppg 3.9 rpg). Bolen is deceptively athletic, plays above the rim, and loves to shoot the straight away 3. Look for Bolen to use his explosiveness to get into the lane and make things happen for his teammates. The man that will be distributing to the wings and handling the ball 90% of the time is Sophomore PG Jaren Lovely. Also the son of a coach, Lovely has been seeing varsity action since his 8th grade year and is ready to step into a dominate role at the PG position in a region that is known for its PG’s. Don’t look for Lovely to get rattled by the likes of Chase Parsley (Sheldon Clark) or Braxton Blair (Johnson Central) as he has already been going up against them for 2 full seasons. Not only can Lovely distribute and handle the ball, but he can score when needed. Shooting a high percentage form outside the arc and at the free-throw line, don’t be surprised to see Lovely put up a few big scoring games. Likely stepping into a starting role for the first time will be newcomer Senior Will Porter. Porter has a great jump shot for someone his size and can score around the rim, but perhaps his greatest attribute is how hard he plays the game. Porter runs the floor with intensity, never gives up on a play (sacrificing his body often), and don’t mind mixing it up down low. His big body will help the Hornets this year on the front line as they make a push for the regional tournament. It should be an exciting year for the Hornets as they beat every 15th Region opponent the played in summer ball except Johnson Central (49-52)! Key Losses: Corey Pitts (15.3 ppg 8.1 rpg) Key Returning: Trenton Russell Soph. 6’3’’ (16.1 ppg 7.6 rpg), Jeffrey Bolen Sr. 6’2’’ (14.9 ppg 3.9 rpg), Jaren Lovely Soph. (8.5 ppg 3.2 rpg) Newcomers to watch: Will Porter 6’5’’ Sr. (Had a great summer showing) Schedule (Subject to Change): 12/1 Knott Central, 12/2 Allen Central, 12/4 @ East Ridge, 12/12 @ Pikeville, 12/13 @ Powell County, 12/16 Paintsville, 12/18 @ Breathitt County, 12/27 @ Belfry, 12/29 June Buchanan @ Belfry, 1/2 Johnson Central, 1/12 @ South Floyd, 1/5 @ Paintsville, 1/20 @ Sheldon Clark, 1/22 @ Belfry, 1/23 @ Morgan County, 1/26 @ Betsy Layne, 1/27 @ Johnson Central, 1/31 East Ridge, 2/2 Shelby Valley, 2/4 South Floyd, 2/6 Breathitt County, 2/12 Prestonsburg, 2/13 Sheldon Clark, 2/16 June Buchanan, 2/19 Morgan County, 2/20 @ Shelby Valley 7. Paintsville (10-14): The Tigers have not been to the Regional Tournament since they advanced to the KHSAA Elite 8 during the 2007-08 season but look to break that streak this season. Paintsville is led by Hall of Fame Coach Bill Mike Runyon (winner of 8 Regional Titles and a State Championship (1998)) and have a roster full of upper classmen this year. Last season the Tigers were bit by the injury bug losing key players for the entire season and eventually fell in the 57th District play-in-game to Magoffin County (63-67). With the departure of Lawrence County (moved to the 60th District) and a healthy roster, look for Paintsville to break into the Regional Tournament and be major factors in the All-A Classic this season. Paintsville will be led by Junior PG Luke Trimble. The son of Former Head Coach and current Paintsville Assistant Coach, Les Trimble, Luke plays with much of leadership and determination his father demonstrated when he led Johnson Central to a 15th Region crown in 1984 (Les also played the point). Luke is built solid, can finish with both hands, and never seems to get tired on defense. On a side note, Luke is one of three fraternal triplets. The Tigers also return guards Matt Miller, Luke Daniels, and Zach Collins to the roster. It is still unclear if Miller will play this season (he missed last season due to injury), but if he does he may be the best all-around player the Tigers will have. Miller can shoot the ball well and gets in the lane easily to create for his teammates. Zach Collins is a 3 point specialist who has never seen a shot he didn’t like. He shot selection has been questioned from time to time, but he does have the ability to make 6-8 3’s in row if he gets hot (he has a 30 point game to his credit). It will be interesting to see if Coach Runyon gives him the green light going into his Senior year. Luke Daniels is a solid guard who will give key minutes to the Tigers on both offense and defense this year with the potential to lead them in scoring. The Big’s for Paintsville are the real question marks. Quentin Hensley is an athletic PF who can finish above the rim with one or two hands and has good touch inside of 12 feet. When he commits to the post, Hensley is tough to guard for any big in the region and has several big games in rebounding and scoring to his credit. The biggest question the Tigers may have is whether or not Kash Daniels is going to play. Sitting out last year, Kash focused more on Baseball and Football (he is the Ace on the baseball staff and quarterback for a 9-2 Paintsville squad). At 6’4’’ and 235lbs, Kash is a man amongst boys who has Division I Strength and athleticism on both the grid iron and diamond. If Kash decides to play Paintsville will have the front line to dominate the glass and protect the rim. Needless to say, there are some questions for Paintsville, but regardless it should be a good year for the Tigers. Don’t expect to see back-to-back losing records for Coach Runyon as the Tigers may get close to the 20 win mark this season. Key Losses: Lane Daniels Key Returning: Luke Trimble Jr. 6’0’’, Zach Collins Sr. 6’1’’, Quentin Hensley Sr. 6’5’’, Luke Daniels Sr. 6’1’’ Matt Miller Jr. 6’3’’ Kash Daniels Jr. 6’5’’ Newcomers to watch: Peyton Smith Sr. 6’2’’ Schedule (Subject to Change): 12/1 Russell, 12/2 @ South Floyd, 12/4 Riverside Christian, 12/9 Ashland, 12/11 Pike Central, 12/16 @ Magoffin County, 12/18-12/20 Gatlinburg-Pittman Invitational, 12/23 @ Sheldon Clark, 12/27 Shelby Valley @ Pikeville Invitational 12/28-12/20 Pikeville Invitational, 1/3 Allen Central @ All A Classic, 1/13 Johnson Central, 1/15 Magoffin County, 1/17 Greenup County, 1/20 @ Allen Central, 1/22 Clay County, 1/23 @ Wolfe County, 1/29 Sheldon Clark, 1/30 Lee County @ Various Sites, 2/2 @ Morgan County, 2/5 @ Johnson Central, 2/10 @ Betsy Layne, 2/12 Belfry, 2/17 @ Prestonsburg, 2/19 @ Pikeville 8. Betsy Layne (26-6): Betsy Layne will be under new leadership as Gary Keathley takes the reigns for his first season as he replaces the retired William “Junior” Newsome. Keathley is no stranger to the program as he enters his 2nd decade at Betsy Layne (he has been an assistant for many years with the Bobcats). Betsy Layne finished last season by losing to Lawrence County in the opening round of the 15th Region Tournament (52-71) after winning their 2nd Consecutive 58th District title. The loss of sharp shooting guard Dylan Meade and post presence Dylan Hamilton will hurt, but the Bobcats have the tools to put together another successful season. The defending All-A champion will look to make a push at the Regional Title this year as they return a cast that has known nothing but success. Peyton Case is the unquestioned leader of Betsy Layne and one of the best guards in the region. Case has perfected the art of the mid-range jump shot and is known for his composure under pressure. He returns for his Senior season to lead the Bobcats and should have plenty of help. Also returning for Betsy Layne will be big man Lako Daniels and Wing player Andrew Tackett. Daniels will be called upon for rebounding and post defense while Tackett will look to slash out of the flex offense and can finish in traffic. The Bobcats also lost Dalton Meade to neighboring Pikeville but have plenty of guards that will compete for the vacated minutes. It will interesting to see how coach Keathley runs the team in his first year (will he stick with the Flex offense Coach Newsome was known for or will he install a new system)? Either way Betsy Layne has an established tradition and should be in the 15th Region tournament come March. Key Losses: Dylan Meade (13.4 ppg 2.6 rpg), Dylan Hamilton (5.4 ppg 7.5 rpg) Dalton Meade (transfer to Pikeville)(5.7 ppg 3.7 rpg) Key Returning: Peyton Case Sr. 6’2’’ (19.2 ppg 4.0 rpg), Andrew Tackett Jr. (5.3 ppg), Charles “Lako” Daniels Sr. 6’4’’ (5.0 ppg 4.0 rpg) Newcomers to watch: Dustin Rogers Sr. (6.3 ppg) Schedule (Subject to Change): 12/2 Pike Central, 12/5 @ Allen Central, 12/9 @ Pikeville, 12/12 @ Belfry, 12/16 East Ridge, 12/20 East Carter @ Raceland, 12/21-12/22 TBA @ Raceland, 12/26 @ Lexington Catholic, 12/27-12/28 TBA @ Lexington Catholic, 1/3 Prestonsburg @ All A Classic, 1/6 Piarist @ All A Classic, 1/13 Sheldon Clark, 1/16 South Floyd, 1/20 @ Shelby Valley, 1/23 @ Prestonsburg, 1/26 Magoffin County, 1/30 @ South Floyd, 2/4 Prestonsburg, 2/6 Allen Central, 2/9 Jackson County, 2/10 Paintsville, 2/13 Phelps, 2/17 @ Johnson Central, 2/20 Jenkins 9. East Ridge (16-11): Head Coach Randy McCoy looks to lead the Warriors to the 15th Region tournament for the 4th Consecutive year. Last season the Warriors fell to eventual Champion Johnson Central in the opening round of the 15th Region Tournament (45-62) and will have to replace Jacob Skeens, Tony Wolter and Patrick Coleman (graduation) along with starting guard Michael Fields (transferred to Shelby Valley). Returning for East Ridge will be Seniors Johnny Miller, Jacob Chaney, and Austin Hylton. Miller has been a staple in the 15th Region since his Freshman year and is known for his ability to shoot the 3. East Ridge will need his ball handling and dribble penetration this season as well if they want to make a push into the 15th Region Tournament. Jacob Chaney will provide solid scoring from the mid to low post, and will be called upon for rebounding and defense. Austin Hylton may be one of the most interesting players in the Region. The 6’4’’ big man has Division I athleticism and plays way above the rim (its not uncommon to see a few spectacular dunks when he plays), but sometimes gets caught up in his emotions and thus takes himself out of the game. If Hylton can block out the crowd and trash talk, he can be on the best players in the region. His leaping ability and rebounding will be needed for the Warriors to make a run at the 59th District and 15th Region Title. Head Coach Randy McCoy has coached regional champions in multiple regions (Elkhorn City 1993-15th Region: University Heights 2008-2nd Region). McCoy has also coached successfully at the college level (University of Pikeville) and that’s why we should expect another good year from East Ridge. If they can get rolling in the right direction at the right time, East Ridge will be a tough to beat in the tournament, even with all the players they have lost. Key Losses: Jacob Skeens, Tony Wolter, Patrick Coleman, Michael Fields (Transfer to Shelby Valley) Key Returning: Johnny Miller Sr. 5’10’’, Jacob Chaney Sr. 6’2’’ Austin Hylton Sr. 6’4’’ Newcomers to watch: Autsin Rowe Sr., Jacob Childers Jr., Seth Conn So. (Transfer from Pike Central) Schedule (Subject to Change): 12/4 Magoffin County, 12/12 Piarist, 12/13 North Laurel @ Clay County, 12/16 @ Betsy Layne, 1/12 Pike Central, 1/16 @ Shelby Valley, 1/22 Pikeville, 1/24 Lee County, 1/27 @ South Floyd, 1/31 @ Magoffin County, 2/6 Shelby Valley, 2/7 Harlan County, 2/10 @ Pikeville, 2/14 @ Piarist, 2/17 Phelps 10. Prestonsburg (15-18): The Blackcats return their top 3 scorers from a 58th District runner-up and regional semi-final appearance in 2013-14. Prestonsburg’s up and down season ended at the hands of Johnson Central (40-92) in what was the second largest margin of defeat in the history of the 15th Region Tournament (52 points) but the future looks very bright for 3rd year Head Coach James Derossett. Prestonsburg will rely heavily on veteran guard Jarredd Jarrell, prolific scorer and rebounder Dalton Frasure, and sharp-shooter Jarrin Hall. Senior Jarredd Jarrell reached the 1,000 point mark half way through last season and will be asked to score at a similar pace this season. Jarrell handles the point for the Blackcats and will run the show at the offense end. The silky guard knows how to get in the paint and use his athleticism and strength. Jarrell is also the quarterback for a successful football team. Dalton Frasure is the leading returning scorer and rebounder in the region and will provide inside defense and offense for Coach Derossett. Jarrin Hall can shoot from anywhere on the floor, but has also shown the ability to get in the lane and make things happen. Hall is an underrated rebounder from the guard position as well. Look for the Blackcats to be back in the 15th Region tournament again this year as they transition out of what they hope is a deep playoff run on the grid iron. Key Losses: Aaron Foley (3.9 ppg 2.5 rpg) Key Returning: Dalton Frasure Jr. 6’4’’ (20 ppg 9.2 rpg), Jarredd Jarrell Sr. 5’11’’ (15.6 ppg 3.8 rpg) Jarrin Hall Sr. 6’0’’ (11.3ppg 4.6 rpg) Newcomers to watch: Grant Martin Jr. 6’3’’ (3.0 ppg 3.2 rpg) Schedule (Subject to Change): 12/9 Riverside Christian, 12/13 @Sheldon Clark, 12/16 South Floyd, 12/19 Lee County @High Tech Signs Classic, 12/20-12/21 TBA @ High Tech Signs Classic, 12/26 Atherton @ KCD Classic, 12/27 @ KCD Classic, 12/28 @ KCD Classic, 1/3 Betsy Layne @ All A Classic, 1/10 Letcher County, 1/13 @ Allen Central, 1/16 @ Pike Central, 1/23 Betsy Layne, 1/27 Allen Central, 1/30 @ Shelby Valley, 2/3 Pikeville, 2/4 @ Betsy Layne, 2/7 @ South Floyd, 2/12 @ Magoffin County, 2/17 Paintsville, 2/20 @ Belfry 11. Pike County Central (15-11): New Head Coach Keith May will lead the Hawks this season as long time Head Coach Kelly Carwile left to join Josh Cook as an Assistant Coach at Mercer County. Pike Central won the 60th District last season before falling to Prestonsburg in the opening round of the 15th Region Tournament (54-60) and returns some experience that may help them exceed that mark this season. Senior’s Ethan Osborne and Braxton Tibbs return to pace the Hawks as a much improved 60th District now faces them (Lawrence County has joined from the 57th District). Osborne is the biggest player in the region and needs to be a dominate force in the middle for the Hawks to succeed. He has a nice touch around the rim and is extremely difficult to move off the block with his strength. Look for Osborne to drop step with his left foot a lot as he uses the right hand jump hook to score the ball. Braxton Tibbs is one of the best athlete’s in the school and plays above the rim. He can handle the ball when needed but looks to use his explosive leaping ability and strength to knock players off balance and make things happen in the lane. Look for Tibbs to have some big scoring games this season. Transfers have really hurt Pike Central this year as they had promise of a team in the 5-8 rankings. Tyler Burnett was one of the best guards in the region and the best returning player Pike Central had, but left to join Boyd County after playing a full summer schedule with the Hawks. Freshman Guard Seth Conn was an up and coming player that would have filled in for some of Burnett’s lost minutes, but he elected to transfer to East Ridge. After the departure of Head Coach Kelly Carwile, Pike Central administration waited a very long time to name a new Head Coach. This is likely a contributing factor to the loss of players the Hawks have seen. Regardless, Coach May has the talent to get out of the 60th District and become a factor in the Regional Tournament. Key Losses: Tyler Burnett (Transfer to Boyd County), Alex Holbrook, Seth Conn (transfer to East Ridge) Key Returning: Ethan Osborne Sr. 6’8’’, Braxton Tibbs Sr. 6’4’’ Newcomers to watch: Ryan Eads Soph. 6’1’’ Schedule (Subject to Change): 12/2 @ Betsy Layne, 12/5 Sheldon Clark, 12/6 @ Letcher Central, 12/9 Allen Central, 12/11 @ Paintsville, 12/13 @ Knott Central, 12/27 South Floyd @ Pikeville Invitational, 1/3 @ Leslie County, 1/5 @ Johnson Central, 1/9 Phelps, 1/10 @ Pikeville, 1/12 @ East Ridge, 1/13 @ Lawrence County, 1/16 Prestonsburg, 1/17 TBA @ Hatfield-McCoy Shootout, 1/20 Belfry, 1/23 @ Phelps, 1/27 Lawrence County, 2/3 @ Belfry, 2/10 Johnson Central, 2/14 Pikeville, 2/17 @ South Floyd, 2/18 @ Shelby Valley, 2/19 Letcher Central 12. Allen Central (13-13): Allen Central lost 6 players to graduation last season, but Head Coach Brad Short (3rd Season with the Rebels) still returns his top two scorers. In what could be the last season of basketball for Allen Central (Consolidation with South Floyd in new School Floyd County Central will be soon), Allen Central will look to make a push into the 15th Region Tournament for the first time since the 2007-08 season when they won the 58th District tournament and were knocked off by Johnson Central in the first round of the Regional Tournament. Seniors Devan Horn and Mason Nelson will take on much of the scoring and rebounding load for the rebels. Both Horn and Nelson can shoot, drive, dribble, and pass. They can do it all for Coach Short and should both average in the 14-17 ppg range this upcoming season. The Rebels will look to play fast and furious this season and will have plenty of players to do just that. Look for Allen Central to go 9-10 deep and press in both the ¾ and ½ court sets. In what may be the last season for the program, look for tradition rich Allen Central to make some noise in the 58th District. Key Losses: Jarred Hamilton, Cameron Hamilton, Austin Salisbury Key Returning: Devan Horn Sr., Mason Nelson Sr. Newcomers to watch: Zach Latron Jr. Schedule (Subject to Change): 12/2 @ Magoffin County, 12/5 Betsy Layne, 12/6 @ Piarist, 12/9 @ Pike Central, 12/12 South Floyd, 12/13 Jackson City, 12/16 @ Phelps, 12/20-12/22 TBA @ High Tech Signs Classic, 12/29-12/31 TBA @ Greenup County Classic, 1/3 Paintsville, 1/6 @ Riverside Christian, 1/9 Rose Hill, 1/13 Prestonsburg, 1/20 Paintsville, 1/23 @ South Floyd, 1/24 @ Rose Hill, 1/27 @ Prestonsburg, 1/30 Pikeville, 2/2 Leslie County, 2/6 @ Betsy Layne, 2/9 Jenkins, 2/10 @ Letcher Central, 2/14 @ Menifee County, 2/17 Belfry, 2/20 Piarist 13. Belfry (8-19): In his first year after replacing long time Head Coach Randy Casey (now coaching at Pikeville University), Head Coach Mark Thompson lead the Pirates to the a 60th District Runner-up appearance and a 15th Region Round loss to Shelby Valley (31-67). That’s not too bad considering Belfry had no seniors and new system to install. In Coach Thompson’s second season, look for the Pirates to be much improved as they return their leading scorer in Garrett Fannin, their leading rebounder and big man in Cole Bentley, and a tank of a Guard in Cameron Catron. Fannin can shoot from anywhere on the floor and knows how to get what he wants from an offensive set. Look for him to average close to 20 ppg this season and have the ball in his hands late if the Pirates need a bucket. Cole Bentley can score in a variety of ways around the rim and if one of the best offensive rebounders in the region. Look for Bentley to clean up a lot of the missed shots from the Pirates and provide solid front line defense as he should average near a double-double this season. Cameron Catron (football standout) looks as if he should be on the cover of a muscle magazine and provides lock down defense and ball handling for the Pirates. Catron will also use his strength to get in the lane and to rebound. Since most of the basketball athletes at Belfry also play football (and Belfry usually makes a deep football playoff run), look for the Pirates to hit top form around the middle to end of January. Once they get in basketball shape, with their size and physical play, Belfry is an opponent no one wants to see in the tournament. Key Losses: None Key Returning: Garrett Fannin Jr. (15.8 ppg 4.2 rpg), Cole Bentley Soph. (10.4 ppg 7.8 rpg), Cameron Catron Soph. (4.0 ppg 2.4 rpg), Dawson Isom Sr. (8.4 ppg 6.0 rpg) Newcomers to watch: Austin Woolum Soph. (4.6 ppg 2.2 rpg) Schedule (Subject to Change): 12/12 Betsy Layne, 12/13 @ Letcher Central, 12/19 East Jessamine @ Rowan County, 12/20 Louisville Holy Cross @ Rowan County, 12/27 Magoffin County, 12/29 Tug Valley, 12/20 June Buchanan, 1/2 Pikeville, 1/5 @ Shelby Valley, 1/7 @ Tug Valley, 1/8 @ Johnson Central, 1/10 Greenup County, 1/13 @ Phelps, 1/15 Lawrence County, 1/17 Mingo Central @ Williamson, 1/20 @ Pike Central, 1/22 Magoffin County, 1/24 @ Henry Clay, 1/27 Phelps, 1/29 Logan, 1/31 @ Knott Central, 2/3 Pike Central, 2/5 @ Lawrence County, 2/7 Sheldon Clark, 2/12 @ Paintsville, 2/17 @ Allen Central, 2/19 Mann, 2/20 Prestonsburg 14. South Floyd (9-21): Head Coach Justin Holbrook enters his third year with the Raiders in what could be the school’s last (Consolidation with Allen Central into the new Floyd County Central is looming). South Floyd plays in the last 5 team district in the 15th Region (Lawrence County moved from the 57th to the 60th District this season) and looks to make some noise during the 2014-15 year. The raiders will be led by the return of two starters in Junior PF Hunter Johnson and Freshman PG J.R. Tackett. The young point guard and talented big man will give the Raiders leadership in both the front and back courts but they will not be alone in the pursuit of regional glory. Coach Holbrook will call upon Senior Center Mack Little and Juniors Brady Ousley and Poppa Trammell for big minutes and increased production. The Raiders like to play fast and force tempo, but have shown the ability to slow down and control the game as in the 58th District 1st Round game versus Betsy Layne last season when the Raiders entered the 4th Quarter in a 1 point game. Although they lost 3 key seniors from last years’ squad, South Floyd will be much more competitive in a District that has been dominated over the last decade by Betsy Layne and Prestonsburg. Key Losses: Austin Bailey, Toby Tackett, Tyler Daniels Key Returning: JR Tackett 5’11’ Fr., Hunter Johnson Jr. 6’4’’ Newcomers to watch: Jacob Collins 6’0’’ Fr. Schedule (Subject to Change): 12/1 @ Shelby Valley, 12/2 Paintsville, 12/5 Phelps, 12/6 @ Fairview, 12/9 @ Jenkins, 12/12 @ Allen Central, 12/16 @ Prestonsburg, 12/20 @ Raceland, 12/27 Pike Central @ Pikeville Invitational, 12/29-12/30 TBA @ Pikeville Invitational, 1/3 TBA @ All A Classic, 1/8 @ Letcher Central, 1/12 Magoffin County, 1/16 @ Betsy Layne, 1/17 @ Piarist, 1/19 Jenkins, 1/23 Allen Central, 1/24 Fairview, 1/27 East Ridge, 1/30 Betsy Layne, 1/31 Powell County @ Jackson City, 2/4 @ Magoffin County, 2/7 Prestonsburg, 2/11 @ Lawrence County, 2/17 Pike Central, 2/19 Piarist, 2/20 @ Phelps 15. Phelps (5-24): Head Coach Bobby Varney is entering his 5th season with the Hornets and knows what it takes to win at Phelps. He has captured one of three 60th District Championships in school history and is in the process of rebuilding a program with lots of young talent. Coach Varney will ask 4-5 freshman to play key minutes for the Hornets this season as they continue to grow and develop. Strengths for his team include athleticism, size, and basketball IQ with the weaknesses being youth and learning to play at the High School level. With powerhouse Lawrence County moving into the district for the first time, it will be no easy task making it to the regional tournament, but don’t be surprised if the young Hornets are there come March. Key Losses: Leon Blankenship Key Returning: Elijah Branham 6'3" Soph. 14.5 ppg 3.4 rpg 2.1 apg, Steven Prater 6'5" Sr. 7.5 ppg 9.3 rpg Matt Hatfield 6'3" Jr. 9 ppg 6 rpg Dalton Woford 5'7" Sr 4.1 ppg 2.1 apg Newcomers to watch: Koleston Blankenship 5'10" Fr. Christian Mounts 6'1" Fr. Schedule (Subject to Change): 12/2 @ Piarist, 12/5 @ South Floyd, 12/9 @ Hurley, VA, 12/11 Letcher Central, 12/13 Raceland, 12/16 Allen Central, 12/19 Jenkins, 12/27 @ Pikeville, 12/27-12/30 TBA @ Pikeville Invitational, 1/3 Shelby Valley @ All A Classic, 1/5 Hurley, VA, 1/9 @ Pike Central, 1/13 Belfry, 1/16 @ Lawrence County, 1/17 TBA @ Hatfield McCoy Shootout, 1/20 Piarist, 1/23 Pike Central, 1/27 @ Belfry, 1/30 Lawrence County, 2/3 @ Tug Valley, 2/5 @ Riverview, WV, 2/6 Sheldon Clark, 2/10 @ Tug Valley, 2/11 @ Jenkins, 2/13 @ Betsy Layne, 2/17 @ East Ridge, 2/18 Riverview, 2/20 South Floyd 16. Piarist (3-19): Head Coach Kevin Tackett begins his 5th season with the Knights and has ample senior leadership as Piarist looks to make its first push into the 15th Region Tournament. The small school plays in the tradition rich 58th District and uses most of its student body to fill the roster but that dosent mean the Knights are without talent. Look for Piarist to be much improved this season as they return their top 2 leading scorers (Tyler Stumbo and Michael Williams) and bring with them a senior laden team that includes Clay Slone, Bryce Marshall, James McCarty, and Subhash Gutti. Key Losses: Galvin Greene (6.7 ppg 16.4 rpg) Key Returning: Tyler Stumbo Sr. (21.0 ppg 5.0 rpg) Michael Williams Sr. (16.4 ppg 8.3 rpg) Newcomers to watch: Bryce Marshall Sr. Schedule (Subject to Change): 12/2 Phelps, 12/6 Allen Central, 12/12 @ East Ridge, 12/12 @ John Burton, VA, 12/29 @ Rose Hill, 12/30 @ Fairview, 1/6 Betsy Layne @ All A Classic, 1/8 Redbird, 1/9 @ OBI, 1/13 Rose Hill, 1/17 South Floyd 1/20 @ Phelps, 1/23 OBI, 1/31 Fairview, 2/6 @ Redbird, 2/7 Riverside Christian @ Buckhorn, 2/11 Riverside Christian, 2/14 East Ridge, 2/19 @ South Floyd, 2/20 @ Allen Central 15th Region Player Rankings: 1. Kyle Gullett (Johnson Central) 6’7’’ Senior (SF) With the ability to score inside and out, Kyle Gullett is one of the most versatile players in the state and a nightmare for opposing coaches to game plan against. Gullett is 6’7’’ Wing player with a high release on his shot that is tough to defend. He shoots 41% from the 3-point line and 82% from the Free-Throw line, averaged 15.3 ppg and 4.9 rpg last season, can finish above the rim with either hand and has a well-rounded post game. If you put a big on him, he goes outside, if you put a guard on him, he goes to the post and can do both with great efficiency. With a 6’10’’ wing span, Gullett is on pace to be 2nd in school history in blocks (Shane Hall 2014) and is the only player in school history to make 75 3’s and have 75 blocks in the same season. Not only can Gullett play the game, but he is top in his class with a 33 on his ACT and a 4.0 GPA. Look for him and Coach McKenzie to use this intelligence to keep teams guessing on sets throughout the season. Gullett is getting several calls from low to mid major college teams but you may see him move up the list to high major’s as he will likely be offered a full academic scholarship to any school he wishes (meaning teams will not have to waste and athletic scholarship by taking a chance on him). Kyle Gullett will compete for 15th Region POY this season, but don’t be surprised to see him on an AP All-State Team either. 2. Chase Parsley (Sheldon Clark) 5’11’’ Senior (PG) Chase Parsley will be a lead contender for 15th Region player of the year and will likely average near 20 ppg this season. The 4 year starter shoots a high percentage from the free throw line, has deep range on his 3-point attempts, and knows how to score in the lane. Parsley looks to join the SC 2,000 point club this year and lead his team all the way to Rupp Arena in March. Late in the game look for Head Coach Frankie Smith to have the ball in Parsley’s hands as the cards rely on his experience and play making ability in crunch time situations. Parsley is the best guard in the region in the pick-and-roll and pick-and-pop offense as his ability to read defenders is uncanny. Parsley is currently getting looks from several NAIA and low major schools, but may see his stock rise with an outstanding senior season and deep playoff run. 3. Robert Dalton (Lawrence County) 6’3’’ Junior (SG) One of the most athletic guards in the state of Kentucky for one of the most talented teams in the Mountains, Robert Dalton does it all for the Bulldogs. At 6’3’’, Dalton can guard any position on the floor, can finish with highlight dunks off rebounds and alley-oops, and when called upon can shoot the 3 consistently. Don’t be surprised to see Dalton have several double digit rebound games this season as he will often draw upon his superior athleticism to guard post players 4-5 inches taller and 50-75 pounds heavier. Dalton (14.5 ppg) is being looked at by low to mid major colleges and should move up the list as he transitions into his senior season. Opting against prep school this past summer, Robert Dalton should be the catalyst for new Head Coach Travis York as the Bulldogs will be major contenders for the 15th Region Title this year. 4. Braxton Blair (Johnson Central) 6’0’’ Senior (PG) Braxton Blair is a 4 year starter who became the 23rd member of the JCHS 1,000 point club last season and is without a doubt the heartbeat of the Golden Eagles. Braxton already holds the school record for most minutes played in a season and will shatter both the minutes played in a career and assist records at JC (and Head Coach Tommy McKenzie is just fine with that). Braxton is a floor general who possesses unique strength for someone his size, is extremely difficult to trap, and is one of the best ball handlers in the state. Following in his father’s footsteps, Braxton focused hard this off season on his boxing career, thus improving his foot speed and explosiveness that could be seen on the hardwood during summer ball as he recorded his first career triple double (check out his youtube.com boxing highlights for an idea of his hand and foot speed). Braxton is an extension of the coaching staff on the floor, is three time running all 15th Region, and holds an undefeated 15th Region Tournament record as the starting PG for Johnson Central. Look for JC to rely heavily on his experience this season as he may be most important player on any team in the region. Blair is being looked at by some NAIA and low major college programs and may consider pursuing a career in boxing as well. 5. Dylan James (Sheldon Clark) 6’4’’ Sophomore (SF) If it seems like Dylan James has been playing at a high level for Sheldon Clark for quite some time it’s because he has. The prodigy from Martin County has been seeing varsity minutes since his 7th Grade year and has become one the top sophomores in the state. Pick and pop is the MO for James as he shoots a high percentage from the 3 point line, has a flare for the big moment, and can easily get shoots off against opponents with his height and high release. James is not only a 3 point shooter, he can score in the post and rebound as well. With his experience, size, and skill set look for James to have a big year in the 15th Region as he approaches the 2,000 point club as only a Sophomore. 6. Timmy Dalton (Lawrence County) 6’3’’ Sophomore (SF) Timmy Dalton returns for his Sophomore season to help lead the Bulldogs and new Head Coach Travis York as they push for their first 15th Region Championship. Brother to Robert Dalton, Timmy plays with much of the explosive athleticism we see from Robert. He can finish above the rim and runs the floor with grace, but it’s the mid-range and post-game that makes Timmy so effective for Lawrence County. Dalton can step out and hit the 3 when left alone, but looks to get into a 10-15 foot range for the pull up and floater. Dalton can be a nightmare for opposing guards in the backcourt, using his speed and wing span to create easy offense from defense. Dalton is the leading scorer returning for a team that lost no players (15.0 ppg) and will likely see those numbers rise this year as he moves into his 3rd year of starting. 7. Peyton Case (Betsy Layne) 6’2’’ Senior (SG) Peyton Case has been a leader on an extremely successful Betsy Layne team for 3 straight season’s and shows no sign of slowing down coming into his senior year. Under legendary coach William “Junior” Newsome, Case was the master of the elbow jumper out of the Flex-Offense, but has shown he can take it to the rim and shoot the 3 with accuracy as well. Case will approach the 2,000 point the club this season and is coming off a 19.2 ppg 4.0 rpg effort last season. Time will tell how new Head Coach Gary Keathly decides to use Case, but don’t expect Peyton to get rattled or frustrated in key moments as he is known for his composure under pressure. Look for Case to play under control and within the team concept unless called upon late in the game to take over (which he can do). It will be interesting to see how the new coaching staff approaches the season with one of the best guards in the region. 8. Dalton Richardson (Shelby Valley) 5’11’ Senior (SG) Dalton Richardson is a 5 year varsity member for the Wildcats who averaged 8.6 ppg and 3.4 rpg while shooting 36.5% from the 3-point line last season. Richardson is a throw-back player that is willing to do whatever it takes to get the win for tradition heavy Shelby Valley and has been one of the most consistent players in the region for 3 years running. Averaging double figures in scoring both his Freshman and Sophomore season’s, Richardson was asked to take a more prominent role on defense last season under new head coach Jim Hicks and subsequently saw his scoring drop. Don’t expect the same this season. Richardson is sneaky athletic with a powerful frame and range to 25 feet on his 3 point attempts, plays with a high basketball IQ and passion, and looks to get his teammates involved early. Richardson has shown he can play in any system you put him in (3 Head coaches in 5 years) and Shelby Valley will look to him for senior leadership and scoring this season as they make a push at yet another 15th Region crown. 9. Dalton Frasure (Prestonsburg) 6’4’’ Junior (PF) Prestonsburg big man and multiple sport star Dalton Frasure reached the 1,000 point club midway through is Sophomore campaign and will get close to 1,000 rebounds this upcoming season as only a Junior. He is a physical force in the middle with his strength and the leading returning scorer and rebounder in the region (20.0 ppg 9.2 rbp). Frasure dosent play above the rim, but possess great foot work and fundamentals that make him difficult to guard in the post. He likes to work out of the Flex offense and off of hi-low ball screens, but also gets opposing big men in foul trouble with his pump fakes and drop steps (Getting to the Free-Throw 8-10 times per a game). Don’t be surprised to see a 20 ppg 10 rpg season from Frasure as he looks to lead the Blackcats back to the 15th Region Tournament come March. 10. Trenton Russell (Magoffin County) 6’3’’ Sophomore (SF) Salyersville has not seen a scorer the likes of Trenton Russell since KHSAA Hall of Fame member Leonard F. Carpenter played for then Salyersville High School (3,000 point scorer). Under the guidance of his father and Head Coach Robbie Russell (Also a record breaking scorer in college), Russell had multiple 30 point games as a Freshman last season and will eclipse the 1,000 mark early in the 2014-15 year. Russell has been playing on the varsity level since his 7th Grade season and is deadly on the mid-range pull up and 3 point shot (with a preference for the corner shots). But scoring is not all the young man can do. Russell is the leading returning rebounder for the Hornets and recorded multiple double-double efforts last season on his way to averaging 16.1 ppg and 7.9 rbp.
