  1.

The atmosphere of the match was what all volleyball games should be like in my opinion. The stands were packed, and the student sections on both sides were rocking the house with their back and forth. The PA announcer and music during the downtimes added to it I thought. The Staff and Parents at Dixie put on a first class event and aside from parking, I thought everything went off without a hitch this week. I was proud to be a part of it, especially when so many thought moving the venue from Ryle was a bad idea.

Agree on the running of the venue and the work put in by parents, players and staff....nice job! However...that ceiling...way too low and disrupted or ended way too many great points. The KHSAA has field requirements for soccer (lights, size, etc) and we need the same for volleyball. I loved the location of Dixie but parking and the ceiling rule it out for future hosting in my opinion.

I also like what the 7th region does in that all teams play on Monday at one of the schools and then the semis and finals are played at one sight. NDA had to be fatigued playing three matches in three days (2 of the matches back to back tough and intense). Not sure why the final moved from Saturday (last year it was on Friday bc of Halloween) but something needs done about the schedule.

  2. St. Henry also won Region 9 in 2004,2005, &2006.

I just looked at the state tournament brackets. Whoever wins the 9th should make it to the finals. No Louisville gauntlet to run through this season.

I just put the 2010 result because of the erroneous info that if NDA wins it would be 10 in a row.

Also, Region 9 faces Region 6 in the first round. Region 6 is Mercy. They easily beat NDA during the season.

  3. I think Ryle's struggles this year hurts Bush's chances for Reg 9 POY. It's probably Smith's award at this point. But I think we'll see a St. Henry/NDA final. Like we saw in girls soccer, it's not your record or your in-state ranking, it's who you play. Cooper hasn't played a single team outside of the state all year, and they don't play Assumption, Mercy, or Sacred Heart. I think NDA is better prepared to take the Region 9 title for the 10th straight year.

St. Henry beat NDA in 2010.

  4. Per twitter- All Tourney Team Selections-

Ryle - Hayley Bush, Nicole Legg, Reece Barber

Cooper - Morgan Kelly, Katy Smith (MVP), Chelen Beasley

NDA - Jackie Noll, Shannon Gormally, Lainey Stephenson (MVP)

    Holy Cross - Torie Houston

    Villa - Faith Cobaugh

NCC - Mikah Freppon, Rachel McDonald (MVP)

Scott - Jordan Tapp, Kelly Franxman (MVP)

    I am sure I missed a few.

  5. I have compiled season stats for girls

mentioned. Easy to compare. Things vary based on position but I think the only thing this clears up is the fact that there is no front runner and will probably come down to name recognition and/or a popularity contest.

One thing to consider strongly is the juniors from NDA are putting up similar numbers to the other girls and playing much stronger competition. Much harder to get a kill, ace, dig, assist, etc vs the Sacred Hearts of the volleyball world than the teams Ryle and Cooper are playing. That should "weight" their stats a bit. (Just my opinion of course)

  6. "What's cute is that one of the biggest dudes on the team, a senior, wouldn't step up to play the line because he still thinks he's a quarterback."

I'm confused and this is a serious question - kids get to pick where they play in football? Doesn't the coach tell them where to play?

  7. Need someone to tell us more about Notre Dame. That group of girls didn't back down tonight and they look to have plenty of talent on that roster. You guys 'sand bagging' in Northern KY????

Pandas look to be young. Yes or no?

Amazing game to watch and a great crowd. Freshman Pandas won in 2 and Sacred Heart JV won in 3. Worth every bit of the $5.00 admission. Thank you ladies.

I pulled the rosters up at one point late in the match. NDA had three sophomores, two juniors and a senior on the floor.

In contrast, at that same point in the match SHA had all seniors and one junior.

I can't give any insight as to who's who but they were fun to watch. As was SHA. Like you said well worth my $5.

  8. Holy moly what a match. Great play on both sides. Neither team backed down or blinked. This could've gone either way. And what an environment -

Big crowd, NDA had a big student section, SHA JV and Frosh teams had it going on for them. I wish my kid had one match like that during her high school career - the level of play, the crowd, the student support. Really cool.

  9. Heard this so don't quote me on it...

Katy Smith was outstanding for Cooper in all areas. Setting and ball control much improved over last year. They played with very few errors through game 2 but couldn't maintain that. Strong serving team too.

NDA came out nervous - many players it was their first time on a varsity court at NDA. Big crowd, high expectations. Starting lineup is fluid as Buck tried a few different combinations. Positions that didn't change middle hitters (N. Hardig and Rees) and the setting/hitting tandem of Stephenson/Morgan. The person I talked to said the same about A. Noll (subbed in for Sears in front row) and Montcelliani (subbed in for Draud back row). Nice job off the bench. Pandas are young this year and several times had 3 juniors, 2 sophomores and 1 senior on the floor. Very impressed with the guts they showed and the fight. No backing down after losing pretty handedly in the first two sets.

I am sure these two meet in Region. Long season ahead. Strength of schedule favors the Pandas. Sounded like a heck of a way to start the season.

My other prediction is that we continue to see football coverage 6 days a week as the NKY Prep sports writers don't even know enough to cover a match of this caliber. Unfair to the athletes.

  10. I heard about this at a First Communion party over last weekend and have looked into more over this week.

After the match (which TSE won by the way) Matt, and his assistant, were approached by a mom from the NKYVC 11-1 team they were playing when this happened. Matt and his assistant both denied knowingly letting the libero serve more than once. How sad is that...either the fact that two coaches miss something as basic as this or that two adults would stand by and cheat in order to win.

Sandman you say it didn't matter in the long run and I am not sure what that means as TSE 12-1 went on to win the entire tournament, so it did matter.

And to blame the player? At 12's the players know exactly what is going on. I know the libero and her family and I don't think they would appreciate this being placed on her. She has been playing libero all season and knows the rules of the position. It was not a 'mistake' on her part and she certainly didn't act on her own. Keep in mind, TSE has two coaches on the bench....they both missed it? Not possible.

I am told the search is on for video and will be posted if found. Folks are pretty upset about this and TSE is tarnished. After all, Matt is one of their directors and this is what he advocates. I will never believe he got 'caught up in the heat of the moment', Matt has coached at all levels including a long stint at NDA and older ages at the now defunct Team Z. He is saying he can't keep track of a U12 libero because the match is too exciting for him. If you believe that, I got ocean front property in Arizona to sell you.

There is no place for this in volleyball.

  11. I know nothing of this situation but after reading this thread I searched around on facebook and found a person who supports the coach. She posted a status update and said Rhodes was fired because he didn't submit a PO and wouldn't pay it back (or couldn't...I am not sure). The puzzling part for me is this person said that Rhodes wife had issues related to her pregnancy while in Lexington. Why would the school pay for a health issue or any expenses surrounding this issue for a coach? Or was this person whose fb I read not telling it right?
