Now that we have had some of the coaching vacancies hammered out and we are approaching the end of the school year, are we feeling any differently on this region? Is DCA now even more of an unknown with a coach that is stepping into a Central Kentucky job for the first time? Is the 46th a complete tossup or will Mercer run away with it? What can we expect from Wayne County's Post-Coach-Woods-Era?

Yeah, this has to be Paul Wiggins' job if he wants it. Is Brossart on the schedule this year? That would be fun.

Mike was coach for a while and Scott coached with him. Then Scott took over. Mike was an assistant coach for Dixie the last few years.
Could we get the brothers back on the sidelines together then at Dixie? Is that realistic? And if either wants the job I got to think that they would be the frontrunner. Hard to top Mike's resume and Scott has two head coaching stops with a ton of assistant experience underneath that.

Why is there a blue jersey at the top?
So there has been a tradition established that once a year Holmes wears the jersey of the old Lincoln-Grant High School, the all Black segregated high school in Covington. When desegregation happened, they closed the high school portion and those kids joined Holmes.

I cannot restate this enough - parents are the worst part of coaching.

0-2 against Holmes the last two years, both losses at his home court. 40% of Holmes wins the past two seasons have come against teams led by him. Not sure why everyone is so convinced this was the best hire when he couldn’t win games against the two least talented teams in Holmes history. Feels like this hire was rushed to appease to community rather than made because a long, deliberate search took place.
Just to confirm, you are counting Brossart losing to Holmes this past season as part of his 0-2, correct? When he was an assistant for a Brossart team with one of the most depleted rosters in recent school history? Does not seem like a fair assessment to Sam, does it?

Background?
So I am welcome to anyone adding anything significant I am missing, but it appears her major highlights are that she was a standout at Holmes in the late 80s, was a star player at Old Dominion in the early 90s, played overseas, became an assistant at Holmes and eventually the head coach at Holmes, went to Old Dominion as an assistant, then came back home and is currently working with the Covington School District and Covington's Recreation Department.

What a big day for former Pendleton County coaches.

It is going to absolutely take some time for Sam to restore Holmes to contender status but I have some good reasons to be optimistic:
- He “gets” the program/community about as good as anyone can, something that was sorely missed the last few years.
- He has experienced both great failure and great success throughout his career and is built to keep the program moving forward during lean times.
- For a team which as many losses as Holmes as experienced the past two years, to get a coach with head coaching experience at two places alongside the amazing coaching trees he is a part of as an assistant while still being under 40 is just an absolute home run.

Is this a good job?
Who is on the short list?
I think it is a great job for a first time coach like it was for Browning. But overall, no, if you are an established coach wanting to win and compete for regionals, this one isn't it. Getting out of the district alone is a tough ask anymore and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
With all of that said, I cannot imagine a current head coach going for it. I would look at some of the younger, more ambitious assistants out there, maybe even some in house that don't go with Browning. You have some staffs shaken up right now at Conner, Dixie, and Grant etc... Could leave some quality assistants out there looking for that new step up.

Tim Shields always had decent Win/Loss records when he was there. Once he left, it's been a roller coaster. What happened? Run out of talent or did they just up the competition level?
My take on the program under Coach Shields - he ran his system of taking the air out of the ball on offense and a tight zone that made games, especially against schools of a similar size, ooze along and result in super low scoring affairs. That makes a team capable of winning against teams better than them (and losing to teams worse than them).
Brian Coburn came in with a more standard way of going about things than the niche Shields system. Though never wildly successful, he got some wins during the career of Lexie Aytes and a middle school Kayla Unkraut.
Unkraut leaves for St. Henry when she enters high school and Villa still hasn’t found anyone near the level of Unkraut or Aytes to be the engine to success.
During that decline, Coburn left, giving rise to the Kortekamp Era. I think the legacy of Katie Kortekamp will be that she kept the program alive, which can’t be said for other small school girls programs across the state.

And the fifth 9th region All A school job is open. This position, to me, is one that is truly all about the kids because there are few programs, on either the boys or girls side, that have more trouble stringing together wins than this one.

Bumping this. Who do we expect to cause the next head coaching vacancy in the 9th?

Another All A school in the 9th region has a vacancy. Dayton really struggled this season and the participation isn't where they need it to be if they want to start competing for Div. III conference titles again. Next year is going to be tough with what they had on the roster to finish the year and with Bellevue coming back in full force but there is some hope for the future with the right hire here.

Honestly I think this a big time grab by East.

Holmes has been in similar spots before, but maybe not as bleak. I hope someone has the courage to put the work in and find the diamonds in the rough. Glad we can discuss the rumors and what-ifs about Holmes versus other school situations. Its makes this blog interesting. What is the difference between Covington Holmes and Covington Catholic conversations?
I hear what you are saying but the difference is pretty clear - Holmes is officially open and Covington Catholic still very much has a coach.
Also I am starting to think about another name very familiar to this district who has had some wonderful rebuilds - Erik Goetz.

I doubt Boyle is more consistent. They lose Avery Bodner to graduation. But will also like lose Montavin Quisenberry, Demauriah Brown, and Brock Driver to early graduation for football.
Ouch. Yeah, those are some huge losses. I didn’t know about the early graduates.

This was a rebuilding year for Danville under Ford. I'm looking forward to seeing what year 2 brings for the Ads.
They certainly had a promising start but weren't yet at the level to sustain that success. Certainly reason to believe they should be able to build off of that.
