  1. Offsides or not, it seems there is a lot of objection to PKs to end the game. I understand that but for people who play, coach or have kids that play a lot of club soccer this is the way it is and these are the rules worldwide. The kids in this game, I guarantee have been in PK shootouts before and they know what they need to do. As distasteful as it is, I have no issue with it. I really think non soccer people hate PKs more than people who see this routinely in club tournaments.

With that said, I would like to see two 10 minute OT periods instead of two 5 minute periods.

  2. Agree 100% Someone also told me that one of the guys who came out for the second set of penalty kicks was a freshman? Was that true? Either way, I like the balance in the program now. After a year like last years very easy to have s year or two to 'recover' Again, Congrats to both teams on excellent seasons!

Yes, freshman Jack Stava (Cole Stava's younger brother) came out in the second group of five to take a PK but didn't get the chance. Kudos to that kid for stepping up. Jack played JV all year and was moved to varsity for post-season but did not see any state tournament action. I expect to see him starting for the Colonels next year.

  3. Props to the CovCath team and coaches. Everyone knew they were good last year. Loaded, and experienced, at every position. Other than the fact that CC had never been that far in the tournament, no one was really surprised when it was over.

18 players gone from last year. This year, a whole new group of players, a new back line. A challenging schedule. 3 clean sheets on the way to the finals. Shutout a juggernaut in LCA. Despite the fact they came up a bit short, this is probably a more impressive feat. Well done.

That's exactly right. Last year's team was loaded with senior talent. In the final I think only 2 non-senior starters and it may have been only one but I don't recall. To get back to that spot after losing so much speaks to the players/coaches. CCH returns 6 starters for next year as well as 3-4 juniors/sophomores who contributed quite a bit to varsity. Great season for those kids getting within a hair of repeating.

  4. Dude there is video of this goal posted by a Herald Leader media member. Very clear video from a poor angle. If it is clear from that angle it should have been even clearer from the AR's position. The goal scorer was onside well after the ball was played and in front of 2-3 CC defenders. It really was not close.

Dude, I've seen the video. Very clear video from a poor angle. LOL I think you described that very well. As I said, unless you were on the line of the last CCH defender there is no way you can say one way or another from the video. It was actually a very well officiated game overall.

  5. Daviess the better team, no question. They also had the better crowd (even though the game was in Dunbar's home city). #8 for Daviess was the best player on the field. #18 for Dunbar should have been carded a couple of times late in the game.

I agree. Very solid and impressive turnout for Daviess in that semi-final and given that CCH travels well, should be a big crowd for tonight.

  6. Can the Colonels defense and opportunistic offense continue their run for one more game or does it break down against #1 Daviess County who has only been beaten one time early in the year? Daviess appears to have solid players at every position and are very good offensively. The Colonels appear to have the best defense in the state at this point in time. If the Colonels defense can hold Daviess in check with a couple goals or less, I see this game going to OT and/or PK's.

  7. Craziest stat: 5th straight clean sheet for the Colonels in the State Tourney, last year Semi's and Finals, and 1st 3 games this year. Nuts!!!

Unlikely to get another CS on Saturday, but I will settle for a win any way they can get it.

Agree that another clean sheet will be tough to obtain on Saturday against Daviess but they are on a great roll defensively. Also, consider that of the five defensive starters this year for CCH (goalkeeper and four defenders), none were starters last season for the state champion team. The Colonels currently start four juniors and a senior in the back with the only senior being Mike Vogt.

  8. It's amazing to see the Cov Cath faithful just not be able to let something go. Team is on an incredible run, has a legitimate shot to repeat as State Champs, and they complain about someone being left off a list.

Try looking back and seeing who inserted the CCH player not on the list into this thread. It wasn't me or GPR. Nobody is having a problem letting anything go but if it's brought up in an unrelated thread by someone else then I'd expect supporters of the CCH kid to respond.

  9. Completely agree. 38 goals, 10 assist while playing for the #29th team AND leading his team to the 10th region title, oh forgot that makes zero difference, voting takes place BEFORE the most important part of the season, what a joke. Comparing these factors to some that were selected over him and once again the "All Years of Service and Reputation (rather warranted or not) Awards" shine threw as the better title.

As with the NKY "All Years of Service and Reputation Awards" simply consider who votes, the coaches, explains everything. Ask yourself how many games does each coach actually see these players play? MAYBE 3 , ( and that would be one, two, or three teams at most) if their team has them on their regular schedule then again during (maybe) one scouting situation then again in regional play. And in more times then not the coaches voting see the kids they voted for ZERO times. What a "great" format, laughable is more like it.

Exactly, Schneider was one of the better players I have seen this year on any team and I include Trinity, Summit, Collegiate, etc in those teams I've seen play.

Going back to the "all region" team, if that were to be taken as accurate, it appears that CovCath has made it to the semi-finals of the state tournament with only three good players. The rest of the team isn't worthy of an honorable mention according to some wannabees on this blog. They just shut out (for the first time this season) the highest scoring team in Kentucky history with a few good players. That's some good coaching there!

  10. Northern Kentucky members making the all state team were:

    cooper: snow

    cov. cath: lamb, vogt, schutt

    ryle: Bedel, Crupper, Jordan

    st henry: manahan, kunstek

    NCC: Muck

    Highlands: Rom, Dolezal

    Villa: McQueen

    Pendleton: Dewald

Interestingly the player everyone was upset about not being on the all region team, also isn't on the all state team.

I'm not sure how interesting it is given that it's much more difficult to make an all-state team than an "all region" team. I'm not sure that anyone would complain about not making an all state team given that it's a much larger area.

The only thing interesting is that you still seem to think the "all region" team is based on talent when it's clearly not the case.

  11. "Their coach chose to leave their two leading scorers on the bench to start the game. I assume he was thinking his reserves would roll over the defending state champs and he didn't need them? LOL"

As I understand it Haji is still dealing with a knee issue and not close to 100%. Not sure about the other player.

He came in and played the whole game after CCH scored.

  12. As I said on twitter, to be fair, Collegiate's schedule was watered-down by a FORCED appearance in the All-A ... if you pull out of the All-A in one sport, you pull out in ALL (didn't used to be that way). Cannot pick and choose which sports you compete in.

For Collegiate, a very small school who is going to get dismantled in other sports in The Ville, the All 'A' is a big deal.

Collegiate was in the Bulldog Cup (along with Trinity and North Oldham, which made the final) and had to pull out in the semifinals (Atherton took its spot) because of All 'A' state.

Taking All 'A' games out of the equation, Collegiate STILL scored 90+ goals this year on some decent teams (St. X, North Hardin, and Butler all made state and Collegiate put multiple goals on ALL of them. ... Absolutely waxed North Hardin and Butler).

That all being said, CovCath (who I hadn't seen in person since last year's win over Trinity) played well (and I hope I conveyed that).

Collegiate did not deserve to win. CovCath, even with a rebuilt roster, was better than Louisville's best ... again.

Class A school or not, Collegiate was still the 7th region champion and that region has probably produced more soccer state champs than any other region in the state. Yesterday, CCH came to play and Collegiate looked flat to me. Their coach chose to leave their two leading scorers on the bench to start the game. I assume he was thinking his reserves would roll over the defending state champs and he didn't need them? LOL

For CovCath to graduate 18 seniors after winning the state title and be able to reload to get to this point is pretty remarkable and is a testament to the coaching staff and the senior class as well as the underclassmen who have filled those roles. Good luck to the Colonels on Thursday.
