  1. I'm confused for some reason no one is giving HC the credit they deserve... HC hadn't lost a game to anyone in the 9th. They are playing the best defense of anyone in the 9th an if I'm not mistaken they are the most experienced team in the region with their top 6 players being seniors.

Actually, NCC's, Dixie's and Beechwood's defenses are ranked higher state-wise so I guess it depends what you mean by "in the 9th" -- here are the numbers from http://khsaa.org/basketball/regularseason/2015/statsbit.htm:

    TOP 20 TEAM DEFENSE LEADERS

(playing a minimum of 5 games)

(ranked by points allowed per game)

    School Gms Pts Avg

    Webster County 10 388 38.8

    KY School f/t Deaf 9 356 39.6

    Beth Haven 11 443 40.3

    Calvary Christian 10 437 43.7

    Hazard 8 369 46.1

    Boyle County 7 327 46.7

    Beechwood 9 423 47.0

    Lynn Camp 9 430 47.8

    McCracken County 8 385 48.1

    Franklin-Simpson 9 440 48.9

    Leslie County 7 343 49.0

    Bishop Brossart 9 446 49.6

    Lyon County 7 347 49.6

    Newport Cent. Cath 7 347 49.6

    Dixie Heights 9 449 49.9

    Mercer County 11 552 50.2

    Walden 5 254 50.8

    Clay County 9 461 51.2

    Rowan County 7 359 51.3

  2. Sorry to ask a different qstn for this thread. How did Dixie do?

Dixie played well. CC offered different defensive looks -- mainly 3-2 zone but more man than I would have expected -- but Dixie's offense adjusted and shot well from behind the arc while CC struggled to get good looks from outside. Matt Wilson is, well, Matt Wilson, but Jones and Bradfield played hard and managed to limit his touches here and there rather than focusing on stopping him once he had the ball.

Y'know, CovCath seems to have experienced one or two recent seasons where they had strong guard play, no classic big man, and only moderate team speed -- and they've been successful because of hard work, team intelligence, and strong buy-in. That's what Dixie is trying this year and it should earn them some respect.

  3. To be honest, the notion of whether or not this version of school spirit breaks some rules or entertains some attendees isn't my biggest concern. I'm disturbed at more of a philosophical level -- or, as mushy as it sounds, even a spiritual level -- by these types of behaviors. Cheering for your own team constitutes positive energy; deriding your opponent or the officials constitutes negative energy. Why not put all the costuming, choreography, and rhetoric to positive rather than negative use?

  4. Is that without it being reported? It's been said on here many times where the kids have been disrespectful to other fans. Just because it has been going on for so long doesn't mean the kids don't need to be in check.

They are HS kids which don't always tend to look ahead a to see what their actions can do.

I'll be clear, I'm all for them and they are entertaining to watch. But you can't say "without incident" to quickly.

I could be mistaken, but I seem to recall a genuine incident one or two seasons ago involving the Crazies and one of the Boone County -- as in, any one of the four Boone schools -- teams or student sections. Given the tone of this thread I'm sure someone knows the details and will be willing to share.

  5. Just so everyone knows exactly HOW this all went down, here's a timeline of events. And yes, you can take this as 100% accurate.

February 2015- Tanner Pugh quits team at PCHS

May 1 2015- Pugh transfers to Augusta

June 2015- KHSAA rules Pugh ineligible

July 2015- Pugh family files appeal, but was canceled

Early October 2015- appeal hearing is held

Late October 2015- Judge recommends Pugh be eligible

November 2015- KHSAA commissioner rules Tanner Pugh eligible

PCHS did NOT challenge the appeal, just presented the information as is their responsibility.

You obviously know what you're talking about but I'm not clear on this part of the timeline. The family's appeal was canceled and then an appeal hearing was held?

  6. Kentucky kids currently at Centre College

    Bryan Repishti - Manual

    Michael Arnett - Boyle County

    Sam Gruber - Oldham County

    Brett Jones - Boyle County

    Tucker Sine - Bowling Green

    Jarod Griffin - Lex Cath

Blake Scinta - Kentucky Country Day (Just scored his 1000th point)

    Quinn Pergande - Sayre

Tyler Wesley - Oldham County (Back to Back SAA Defensive Player of the Year)

    Drew Burns - Bishop Brossart

Centre is an interesting case -- they play in the Southern Athletic Association, a D3 conference formed by high-academic-level Southeastern liberal arts schools such as Berry, Oglethorpe, and Sewanee. Very cool arrangement.

  7. Have you seen some of the crazy things SOME parents do, in regards to sports, for their kids.......I can see a handful trying this route.

As the parent of a specially-abled kid I can't think of anything lower than gaming the system this particular way. But, sadly, you're probably right -- given some of the things we've all seen, someone somewhere may consider giving it a shot. [sigh]

  8. He has to prove that he did not move for athletic purposes, if I read the rule correctly, which is going to be hard to do. Also I don't think Pendleton County released him. Bylaw 6-2 says: "(1) these rules prevent and deter transfers due to recruiting or athletic reasons;" Full Bylaw: http://khsaa.org/handbook/bylaws/20152016/bylaw6.pdf

As usual when it comes to transfer issues, I'm somewhere between confused and baffled. Tanner Pugh's family changes addresses between seasons and folks consider his eligibility unlikely; Marcus Mullins' family changes addresses between seasons and -- if I understand the chatter correctly -- folks seem to think he'll play this season at Newport. I must be missing something.

  9. Do transfers between Newport and Holmes every get ruled ineligible ?

I don't know the entire history here, but my impression is that in some cases involving these two schools a player has left one of the two programs while in other cases a player has been removed from one of the two programs. I assume that might make a difference in terms of eligibility deliberations.

  10. Not sure if that's "normal" but I certainly do not have a problem with a kid marketing himself. Families often pay 3rd parties to help market the player. No different here.

I think this is something we'll see more and more often as online PR options become increasingly numerous and sophisticated. Part of me worries that it creates a less-than-level playing field for families who lack the finances to engage those options, but I certainly can't begrudge those who can afford to promote a player the right to do so.
