  1. Dalton for LCA didn't play (no idea why). Hunt played very well filling in for him in the starting lineup.

Rode continues to impress me. He isn't as athletic as the other top players in the state, but his combination of size, ball handling, passing, rebounding, etc makes him a very difficult matchup. He has to be one of the best passers in the state.

Really all of LCA's big guys pass well, and can finish inside consistently. They get so many "easy baskets." Great team that appears to be peaking at the right time.

On the other hand, Bryan Station just hasn't been the same since the first half of the first Scott Co game. The way things are trending they very well might be knocked out by Henry Clay in the first round of the district.

  2. O.K. first off--how can you mention a player that never played the whole year as that being a factor. They never played and aren't going to play. Do you know how many teams can say "what if" about players. Unfortunately that kid was hurt all year and will not play this year. Secondly, out of the 10 wins that WV has in the region 7 of them are against the following Eminence, Owen, Carroll, Williamstown, Grant, Trimble, Anderson. Check out the records of those teams. I believe WV has played the most bottom feeders out of anybody in the 8th.

When I look at the actual GOOD teams that they have both played it becomes pretty clear who the better team is: Collins played several of the top teams in the 6th region (best region in KY). Last week a overtime loss to Doss (number 7 in the state). We could go on and on, but I think Collins wins 7 out of 10.

Based on my rankings the teams have the following results:

    Team A:

    3-4 vs top 25

17-0 vs the rest of the state.

    Team B:

    0-5 vs top 25

18-3 vs the rest of the state.

Seems pretty simple to me that Team A (Walton-Verona) has a better resume.

  3. I agree but that still doesn’t mean they aren’t a top 20 team. They were 13th last week. Got whipped by Madison Central, then defeated LCA and Taylor County and then dropped out? That’s too steep of a drop IMO.

Agreed. If you see a steep decline in their play without Payne, go ahead and drop them. But to arbitrarily drop them because it is assumed they won't be as good as they have been to this point seems unfair to me.

  4. Curious why Lexington Catholic isn't in the top 20. Their only losses in state are to top 10 teams save for an OT loss to Newport. They also have two wins over LCA, and a blowout win over Corbin (though that was a long time ago). I know they got demolished by Madison Central, but so did Ballard.

I think their results certainly merit a ranking, unless it is based on the fact that they won't have their best player moving forward.

  5. Bryan Station jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead, but once Lafayette got their press going it turned around quickly. By the end of the first quarter the Generals were up 25-13 and I don't think the margin ever got under about 8 the rest of the way.

Boone is really good, but he didn't have much help in this one.

Surratt was unstoppable inside for Lafayette. When I'd watched them a couple times earlier this year they have seemed to play better when he wasn't in, but this game he was dominant.

  6. In all honesty this doesn't surprise me too much. Maybe the 38 point margin but not the overall dominating win. Madison Central is THAT good and in all reality while nobody wants to admit it, Lexington Catholic just isn't very good this season. They have played 2 games in 2 1/2 weeks prior to this one. Their most impressive win to date is over LCA on January 2nd(LCA hasn't lost since). Other then that they really don't have a win where you think "ohh wow that's a big win". On the other hand Madison Central has numerous quality wins and are playing at a much higher level then Lexington Catholic right now. I don't think anyone expected a 38 point margin of victory but a comfortable win by Madison Central is no shock to me.

Lexington Catholic destroyed a pretty solid Corbin team, but that was 2 months ago.

  7. I know you probably couldn't tell by Saturdays performance but I do think John Hardin is one of the top 20 teams in the state. Scott County is solid and they shot lights out that day. I don't know many teams that would have dealt with them that day.

You can blame me for that one. When I showed up John Hardin was up 20-8, but once I got there it was ugly.

I don't actually think the Scott Co game is what hurts them near as much as the losses to Etown and Adair Co. They were also hurt by Tilghman having a bad week which takes a little bit of the shine of one of their best wins.

That along with a 2-3 record against other teams in the 15-30 range is why I have dropped them out.

I feel similar with both John Hardin and Pulaski Co that they are a good enough team to be in the 15-20 range, but a couple losses to weaker teams coupled with a lack of big time wins has me keeping them on the outside for now.

  8. Adam Kunkel deserves strong consideration as well. If these two were taken away from their teams, it would be devastating which Cooper already found out. Of course they are dominating players like several others in the state, but yet they are true team players that make those around them so much better.

They each will do well in college where their ability to fit in to a system will be an easy transition as they don't have to be the stars of a team like many high school kids struggle when they join a team full of talented players like themselves. They are my top co-favorites.

Agree. My top 2 as well.

  9. Knox built a big lead early and were up double digits most of the game, but Frederick Douglas got it down to 2 with the ball with around 3 minutes left, but missed a 3.

Adams had a huge first quarter with 4 3s, and Turner took over in the 4th quarter to help Knox hold on. He made it look easy to get to about 10 ft and hit the short jumper nothing but net.

  10. Herein lies the problem, not saying Rez is, people don’t know what the rules are. They think what they watch on TV is the same across the board. It is not and applies to all sports, not just basketball.

True. Like I said, I have no idea if middle schools have their own set of rules, or if they use those of another organization.

  11. I think the bracket sets up well for a 10th region team to make the final four. I think GRC has the most pieces and depth to make a run in the 10th Region Tournament.

There are at least 10 teams who have a decent chance to come out of that quarter of the bracket. I don't see any of those teams going all the way, but that should produce 3 highly competitive games on their way to the semi.

  12. The other team is shooting a free-throw. The other coach calls timeout and asks for a full-time out. I call my team over to prepare them for a press that’s probably going to be coming after the shooter makes the free-throw. The other coach decides to talk for 20 seconds on a full-time out and then sends the shooter and the rebounders to the lane. The referee tells me that I have to get away from my team and put them on the court because the team that called the timeout broke the huddle which means that I to have to break the huddle

I ran the time/scoreboard for a small college a decade ago and the rules at that time matched what this official did. If the team that called the timeout indicated their intent to end the timeout (break the huddle and return to the floor) then the 15 second warning horn was sounded and the other team was required to return to the floor.

With that said, I have no idea what rules a 6 grade game is under.

*I do mine every Sunday, so this was before the All A Championship game.

  14. Mayfield has a good team. At times it looked like they would run away with it. They had a couple runs where it felt like they scored 8 straight in under a minute. Then they hit some terrible slumps. They probably had 6-8 turnovers in the last couple minutes and really couldn't get it settled down.

Somerset played hard all the way to the end. They just settled for too many threes in the last couple minutes when Mayfield kept giving them chances. Those were probably shots they hit a lot of times, but they didn't have the legs left to hit them after 2 grueling games.

  15. Collegiate's schedule is awful,.. and i mean AWFUL. Sure they are 17-4, but they are Litkenhous rated #13 of 18 in the region and have lost to (5-15) Shawnee(who was rated #15 in the region). When they had an opportunity to step up against solid competition, they lost 83-45 to a 12-8 Male team. Its a good record and I am glad they are enjoying victories , but that schedule,.. ugh. They have St X(11-8) coming up as their only other big chance to step it up.

    Raceland 70.2 Litkenhous

    Collegiate 58.8 Litkenhous

    my prediction

    Raceland 61

    Collegiate 48

I'm planning to watch all 8 games tomorrow, and there is at the very least something I am looking forward to seeing in every game except this one.

Can anyone please tell me something to be excited for in the Raceland/Collegiate matchup?

  16. Mayfield is REALLY good. They probably have the most impressive wins of anybody in the tournament. It seems LCA's ratings are boosted by losses to really good teams. But in reality, they don't have the wins that Mayfield Has. When we beat Mayfield earlier in the year they were without one of their best players and so were we (Trice). So it's hard to gauge that game.

Mayfield has beaten UHA (albeit without their second best player) and John Hardin.

Walton Verona is a tough team to gauge as well as they are playing without their big guy.

I think Mayfield definitely makes the final. Then I think the winner of UHA and LCA makes the final. The talk among folks I know at UHA say that they think the game boils down to LCA making 3's and UHA rebounding. If UHA can't close out on their shooters and can't draw even on the boards they will struggle to win. But if they can defend the 3 point line and hold their own in rebounding they think they have a very good shot.

I think LCA's 15 point win over Mercer Co without LCA's best player would rank up there with any of the other teams best wins.

Walton-Verona also had some quality wins in the KOB including Mercer Co and had a nice win this past week at Campbell Co.

Those are 3 very good teams and I expect one of them will win the tournament.
