  1. I'm going to bring up Dalton Griffin's name again. Dalton Griffin scored 1 point, total, in two district games. Dalton Griffin made the 37th district all tournament team. Dalton Griffin is my "Darius Miller" Congratulations young man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am so glad to see that somebody noticed a kid for more then shooting 20 or 30 times a game! Congratulations to him.

  2. I'm curious to hear what Grant Co. fans have to say about this game, especially gchoops and bgcats. Come on, at least congratulate the Pioneers!

I will definitely say congrats to SK. As a matter of fact I told two of their coaches congratulations after the game. I would say more, but I'll leave it at that or I'll get myself in trouble.

  3. GChoops are you getting some blue in that Buckeye blood, about fell over when you gave a UK player some love..lol!

Nice thread, I would throw in Nolan Daugherty for Walton, relentless on defense & gave WV some much needed toughness. His 3rd qrt. Injury hurt WV in loss to GC.

As for Darious Miller out of high school rank 42 nationally & could went to any college he wanted.

Side note Eloy Vargas was ranked 26 that same year, might give some perspective to dads worried about sons not making all region teams on other threads. Rankings...like all region not that important. If kid continues to work hard like UK#1 he will get his accolades.

Darius Miller is my kind of player. Wish he played for the Bucks but oh well. Still an outstanding player that doesn't get much love on the college level.

  4. 2 guys stick out in my mind that don't get enough publicity in NKY

    Cooper's Alex Webster-

    !

Watch this clip and tell me you don't see some Darius Miller in him at the :25sec mark

NCC's Andy Miller- Kid does everything you ask of role player. Great picks, decent shot, good rebounder, hustles.

That kid doesn't get any love? I'm shocked. I'm glad I started this thread!!!! Nice to see some film.

  5. I heard an interesting observation the other day.

A teacher told Andrew Hurley that "you know, you are Grant County's Darius Miller. You go out night after night and lay it on the line. You bump and bang, scrap for loose balls, rebound against bigger opponents.....in other words.....you do the dirty work without all the accolades. You should be proud of yourself."

I thought to myself, there has to be 100's of kids that do the same thing. So this thread is for you. Lets hear about some kids out there that do the same thing but maybe don't get recognized much. This isn't for the kid who scores all the time, this is for the kid(s) who makes it possible for someone else to score all the time.

This is your thread to shine.

  6. What I think is truly interesting about this thread or nearly any other thread on BGP's is that people see things completely differently depending on which side you're on. A couple commonalities throughout this thread I think are:

    1) Coleman was a beast on the glass.

    2) Grant was the tougher team (at least in this meeting).

Other then that I would say everything is up for debate. But based on my view I would say that CincySportsFan is pretty accurate. (We must have been sitting in the same part of the gym).

Whichever side you were on, you have to admit, it was a good competitive game to watch. WV has a very strong program and rest assured....they'll be back next year....with a chip on their shoulders. Could be fun to watch for years to come.

Good luck Braves the rest of the way.

  7. Walton Verona was not a top team in the 8th and was not expected to make any noise in the regional tourney.

Maybe not a dominate force, but they did beat a good Owen County team which many predict to be a regional contender and took Simon Kenton to the wire. So with that and the fact that I just couldn't help myself......I had to post it.

  8. My team was sent home...earlier than expected I might add. Not happy about it but the bottom line is Grant won when most people didn't think they would, or even could. I try to look at things from both sides of the fence. We won the district last year and returned all major contributors. Yes we (most everyone in Walton) thought that we had more than enough talent to repeat, at least return to regionals. That didn't happen. I don't blame Grant fans and players for being excited over the victory. Walton has more talented players and we have been better than Grant all year (not talking bad about Grants players) but the gospel is the gospel and last night the outcome went to the team who A. had a better game plan. and B. was just flat out tougher. The last point I would like to make is on the statement Old School made. If Grants kids did act like they had not been in that situation before, It was because they haven't. None of the players at Grant County have ever played in the regional tournament before.

Well said. Hats off to you Scrapper. When you lose to a team 3 times in one year but win the only one that matters, it makes for a very jubilant crowd.

  9. John Stockton, Isiah Thomas, Jason Kidd, Magic Johnson, Steve Nash, all memorable names. Assists were not available to post from the KHSAA website but both players mentioned in this thread are very unselfish kids. There were several quality players left off the list. Better luck next year!

I'm sorry if you misunderstood me, I said "could be quite different" not that they were quite different. I didn't mean to insinuate that ANY player mentioned was selfish. As a matter of fact I believe I said that they were both fine ballplayers. The point of my post was to say that choosing "All Region" players is about more then offensive stats. In this case, the problem is not with the players, it's with the availability of "complete stats" and/or criteria used to choose players. I personally agree that there were several players left off the list or at least left out of consideration. Hunt and Carr being 2 of them. They both had very good years and along with others should have at least gotten an honorable mention or something. They are both good ball players and great kids and certainly deserved consideration.

  10. Agreed. I didn't see Pippen, Rodman, Grant, Paxton, et al playing for the Sixers. But that is for another thread.

Actually only Jordan and Pippen are the only 2 starters on all 6 teams. Jordan attained 6 titles with basically 3 different groups of players and was voted to the All-NBA Defensive First Team 8 times. But like you said....that's for another thread. The question was asked why 2 players with basically the same offensive stats would not both make it on the "All Region" team. I was merely pointing out that while offensively they may appear similar, as a "total package" they could be quite different. The sad thing is.... there are 1000's of players out there that never get the recognition they deserve because the headlines are only concerned about who the "leading scorer" was. I witnessed a player about 5 years ago that had 18 assists in a single game, although he was congratulated after the game, it wasn't a big deal to most. Those 18 assists lead to at least 36 points and a victory for his team....yet nobody remembers his name.

  11. There is much much more to the game of basketball then offensive scoring stats. Just because a player from any team (boys, girls, middle school, high school, college, NBA) takes the majority of their teams shots, doesn't make them a great basketball player. It will, more times then not, make them the leading scorer but not necessarily "All Region". Too many players, parents and coaches place so much emphasis on offensive stats that they completely forget about who's playing defense, blocking shots, deflecting passes, going after loose balls, creating turnovers, communicating with teammates, rebounding, encouraging younger players and a stat that isn't even listed on KHSAA......ASSISTS! Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to devalue their offensive accomplishments because both of the players listed in this thread are fine ballplayers and I'm sure, great kids. I'm not sure how or who chooses "All Region" players but I would like to think that they choose players based on who they feel has (as close to) the complete package. But one thing I know for sure is....good players do some of these things well but great players do all of these things well. Iverson could score 50 and lose.....yet Jordan has 6 rings!
