Wow...you listed 8 schools here and not once did you mention what will probably be the odds on pre-season favorite next year in the 8th region...Anderson County. I'm just going to chalk it up as an over site...this time.:lol2:
Where is the embarassed emoji? Anderson Co is definitely a staple in the 8th region.
And, let me add another program that is going to be heard from in the next few years...Walton-Verona...very talented group in the pipeline.

I was in Indy the night before and watched future Virginia Cavalier, Kyle Guy and future Florida State Seminole, CJ Walker, probably the top 2 seniors in Indiana go head to head and its my evaluation/ opinion in 2 years or less he would be capable of playing on that level with work on his jumper. Im no rookie. NKU got a steal.
Agree with this, too..I predict we will be watching him and NKU in the big dance at some point in his four years there.

I have enjoyed watching Carson. Truly have, but some of you so overrate him it's awful. He's got terrific athleticism and is strong around the basket. But to play at a "Notre Dame" type level he would have to improve his ball handling immensely, develop a perimeter game and improve his lateral quickness. Is he going to guard the 3 at the next level in the ACC? He's not tall enough to guard the 4 or 5. Come on folks, Carson is headed to a great fit for him at NKU. I hope he has a stellar career there. I'm sure he will continue to improve and develop into a solid contributor. I'm excited to follow his progress and see his game mature and develop there. Like everyone else, I love his demeanor. Just a great attitude. But wow, we need some reality checks on this board when it comes to player evaluation at the next level. Sheesh!
Outstanding post. Thrilled for him and his family and friends that he is going to play somewhere close to home, that he can not only play to the strengths he already has, but to develop his game further, and play where he can succeed and become a cornerstone for what Brannen is going to build there.

I am going to disagree on the 6th or the 9th, @OldhamOldie. I would instead insert the 3rd or the 10th. Or, 15th or 16th.
But, they are in the 8th, or at least until the Mason and Bracken Co fans can figure out their realignment plans in the other threads :sssh:
The 8th is a tough region....In the Louisville metro area, you have established programs with South and Oldham Co, while North is building to make it a three team race in the 29th. Collins and Shelby are certainly going to be both back being strong sooner rather than later. Spencer is another Louisville metro area school that is growing by leaps and bounds. Grant is an enigma, but certainly a potential player and still waiting on the Simon Kenton breakthrough in the 8th.

For the most part, the refs were ok... there was a ridiculous player control foul at the end of the half on Carson on a drive to the hoop that could have swung momentum. But, officiating wasnt the reason Owen came up short tonight.

29-3 and Top 10 rankings dont happen every year in Owenton. Its a pretty gut wrenching loss for a school and community that has never had this caliber of a team before, and captured the imagination of an entire community. But, sometimes the ball doesnt bounce your way....life sucks sometimes.
Congrats to South. If you didn't have a rooting interest in the games tonight, both of those teams were fun team to watch....and you certainly got your moneys worth with the two games tonight.
-
The real question is, "How early do the Owen County fans pack the ROY tonight?" I heard they had Gallatin's gym filled an hour before the game. Will Simon and Collins fans even get a seat. In addition, South fans arrive very early as well. Get your popcorn before you sit...it'll be packed tonight.
I arrived at GCHS for the district final Saturday at 7pm (7:30 tip), and the only available seats were up in the visiting side corner with the other six coaching staffs in the regional tournament. My understanding is that there was a line wrapped around the school for both nights OC played before they opened the doors, an hour before tip.
I doubt anyone will be turned away due to it being full, but if you want a decent seat, get there early or else you will be sitting in the upper endzone.

Hmm, Mapquest has Highlands 4.5 miles away, Scott 6.4 miles away, and Holmes 6.5 miles away.
My mileage were "as the crow flies", straight line.

Simon wins this one.
Owen has had a good year....as recent as 4-5 years ago, they were right there in the mix for the regional crown, and gave Anderson and Walton-Verona scares in regional tournament semifinal games before falling short. But, being a small school and suffering through grad losses and injuries finally caught up with them in the 2013-14 season and they actually went winless that regular season (they did win a district tournament game over Eminence). They improved to double digit wins last year, and won the district last week by beating Gallatin for the third time on the year on Gallatin's home court.

Among the teams still playing, Scott from the 10th is actually the closest, followed by Holmes and Highlands.
There are 8 teams still playing that are within 20 miles "as the crow flies" from BB&T Arena. Both Owen Co and Mason Co are within 50.

Owen 79, South 71 in a great game that goes down to the final :30, free throws make up the scoring margin at the end.
-
Mason Co should host multiple region and district tournaments, even if they aren't a part of them, since Maysville is an hour away seemingly from everywhere.
-
Owen hit 3/15 from three that night...normally, they hit about 6 of 17, so they were below their average. South hit 11/30 which is pretty close to their average.
The point of my question was...both teams probably feel they could have done some things better to win the game...the whole "South can play better but Owen probably played their best game" cuts both ways.
-
how was Owen Co's three point shooting in the first meeting with South?

It's not all about the size of the gym...in fact, I would say the size of the gyms is mostly an overstated part of this debate. High school basketball attendance, while still good, isn't the same as it was 30-40 years ago. Now, there are exceptions to the rule when many small towns have exceptional teams. But, for the most part, regional quarterfinals on Wednesday and Thursday throughout the state will be played mostly in half- and 3/4- filled gyms, many of them smaller than Montgomery Co.
IMO, most of the neutral fans in the 10th, the ones who are more likely to go to games whether their team is playing or not, your hard-core high school basketball fan...reside in the northern part of the region, and that's why Mason Co is the preferred spot, and is the biggest reason why Mason Co has bigger $$ numbers on these KHSAA financial statements.

They actually did not have problems in the game against Murray. Murray just hit some unbelievable shots late to win it. .
Well, since they lost the game....they did have problems. The game had fewer possessions, which allowed the game to probably be closer than it would be at a more conventional pace. Which, in turn, allowed it to come down to a couple of threes late, including the game winner.
And, I understand South's style and that means more defensive possessions for Carson and Dunaway, but I still say Owen welcomes more uptempo than a slower game.
-
South went 11/30, which is right at their average for the year.
Owen won the rebounding battle 40-16.
No idea what the turnover stats were.
I havent seen them every game, but it seems Owen has more problems in slower paced, half court, lower possession games (i.e Murray at the All-A Classic).

There really isn't a comparable gym in the 8th to Montgomery Co. There are a lot of gyms that seat in the 2-3K range, though, so the girls regional rotation is pretty big.
Plus, Henry Co doesnt have the program history that Mason Co has. Henry Co, while a competitive program most years, isn't always in the regional tournament and rarely is a contender to win it, so the rest of the region doesn't have a panic attack about them hosting.
-
Was always told that it was handled well.
It was...the atmosphere was great. And, with the smaller capacity, it was nearly packed every game.
-
Owen looked like a state title contender for about 14 minutes tonight, leading 39-17, before a mini run by Henry Co at the end of the half cut the lead to 41-23 at the break.
Then, the next thing you know, a rugby match broke out. Henry Co, behind some hot three point shooting (plus, Owen Co went totally out of sync on offense) had cut the lead to 49-40 after three quarters, and then got as close as 54-48 with about 5 minutes to go before Owen hit some FTs and made some stops down the stretch to pull out the 12-point win.
Impressed with Henry Co's grit tonight, they had every reason to pack it in during the Rebels blitzkrieg in the first half..I am sure all of the 8th region district title coaches who were in Warsaw tonight probably aren't as enthused about picking out that Henry Co pill as they were thinking earlier in the evening.

Calvary is like a mile or so from Scott. Both are in Taylor Mill.

Of the district tournament financial records that the 39th has sent in to the KHSAA site..the largest paid attendance under the current alignment (MC, BC, AHS, and SP) was somewhere in the neighborhood of 1800-1900 tickets sold for the 2013 district final doubleheader at the Fieldhouse (girls was Bracken-Mason, boys was Bracken-Augusta). Now, I know that doesn't include the pass list attendees, and I remember people talking about how close to capacity that was at the Fieldhouse was that night...but that's what the folks who ran the tournament reported.

The charge on Carson at the end of the half was correct. Good call.
