Members of East Carter’s 1984 State Championship team getting together today to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the State Title. 

The Raiders of East Carter (22-6) and winners of the 16th region will take on the #17 ranked Raiders of Ryle (30-9) at 10:00am on Friday, June 7 at Legends Field. East Carter defeated the #2 ranked team in the state the Boyd Co. Lions 6-0 in championship game. Ryle defeated two of the top teams in the 9th region in root to the state in #9 ranked Covington Cath. 5-4 and Dixie Heights 2-1 in the championship game.

Final from the University of Louisville. The Pioneers will take on the region 4 winner Russell Co. in the opening game of the state tournament on Thursday, June 6 at Legends Field.

One thing about the Ryle vs. East Carter game on Friday morning is that the Raiders will advance to the quarterfinals. lol

Final. #1 Trinity wins the 7th region and improve to 36-4 on the year and the Tigers finish the season at 24-16.

Final. Mason wins its first title since 1994. 

Reds win the first game of the weekend series 5-4 this afternoon. Next game is tomorrow at 7:15 on Fox.

The Reds (24-32) travel to Chicago to take on the Cubs (28-29) in a weekend series at Wrigley Field. The game on Saturday will be on Fox at 7:15. Go Reds!

Bourbon Co. defeated Campbell Co. 3-1 in the other semi.

The 1st and 2nd rounds will be played June 6-8 at Legends Field and the semis and finals will be held June 14 & 15 those games will be played at Kentucky Proud Park.

East has been raking all year, but the story here is the zero in the run column by Boyd County. Andrew Tomolonis was dealing from the mound, as he's done all season for the Raiders.

@16thBBall Fan, your guys had Boyd's number this year. This team might surprise some people in Lexington. 

You never know this is the 40th anniversary of the run they made in 1984 to win the State Tournament. That year they beat Harrison County to win it all they were actually the district runner-up.

Is this tournament being show online to watch? I know the 16th region was online to watch.

Mike was a one of a kind guy that loved high school football and especially his East Carter Raiders. I remember how much it meant to him in 2019 when Coach McPeek got him a sideline pass to be on the Frederick Douglass sideline and take care of the footballs in the Broncos State Championship game vs. Covington Catholic. It made is year I remember him telling me that "I never expected to ever be on this sideline for a state championship. This is awesome!"

Longtime loyal Raider Michael “Nuns” Nunley also passed away recently. He enjoyed life and especially East Carter football, said Garry McPeek, who coached the Raiders from 1989-1994. That’s where Garry came to know and love Nunley, who overcame a lot in his life.

“If you ever feel sorry for yourself, stop and take a look at how ‘Nuns’ lived. He was dealt a big bag of sour lemon and he just kept making lemonade! He loved everyone he came in contact with except (West Carter) Comets … and he really liked them, he just wouldn’t admit it,” McPeek said.

Tim Champlin, the head coach at East Carter, had glowing remarks about Nunley, too.

“To know him was a blessing. Nunley taught us all hard work, dedication and loyalty. He didn’t ever want a hand out, he wanted to earn everything he had, no matter what it meant he had to do. He was dedicated to whatever he was involved with and would defend you to anyone. Mike was as loyal a person as I’ve ever met.”

Champlin called having Nunley on the sidelines “a joy and a comfort. I like to say he was East Carter’s luck charm.”

East Carter’s head coach said he met Nunley at Fairview and when he came to East, it worked out that Nunley was able to join the team on the sidelines.

Nunley had a passion for area sports, McPeek said, and loved it when the ADI’s football preview came out every August. He had an ongoing ranking of the worst team photo in the preview, including last year, and share the choices with McPeek.

Even after McPeek’s stint at East Carter ended, Nunley made the rest of McPeek’s coaching stops Hazard, Greenup County, Lawrence County, Boyd County and Fairview and “lived with me most of the time,” McPeek said.

McPeek called him his “Radio” from 1989 to 2014, a reference to James Kennedy, who was known for his association with the T.L. Hanna High School football team in Anderson, S.C., and became famous for the movie by the same name. He gained that nickname because of always having a small radio with him.

No hit into the 6th inning on Tuesday, yesterday we’re facing a guy that coming into the game had pitched 10 innings and given up 19 BASERUNNERS!!!  Of course he no hits us into the 4th!!!  Brantley was letting them have it on the radio, they deserve it, just pitiful 

The Raiders improve to 22-6 on the season the #2 ranked Lions of Boyd County finish their season at 31-4 with 2 of their 4 losses coming against the Raiders. East Carter will take on the 9th region champion on June 7 at Legends Field.

East Carter now leads 6-0 still on the top of the 7th after scoring 4 runs. The Raiders got a 3 run homer from Blake Hall. 

East Carter picks up 2 runs in the top of the 6th to lead Boyd 2-0 heading to the bottom of the 6th. 

East and Boyd still scoreless now through 4 innings.
