Job is posted on the school website.

Brad stepped down Monday, the girls basketball job is open as well. Thanks to Coach Carr, as far as I know he will stay on as assistant principle. Will miss him roaming the side lines, worked hard for the program.

A few years ago I saw a gym in the building across from the current Holmes gym. I would guess that old gym was the original high school gym. I believe the building was built in the 1920's. Is that gym still used as a gym?

(Side note - in looking for info on this a wiki note said Holmes is the oldest public high school in KY, founded in 1853 as Covington Central. Is that correct?)

The gym is still used, mostly for pratice things, we have been practicing softball in there this past spring' baseball does as well, we have a batting game in there, balcony is gone, still a couple of stands in there. During covid peak it was used as an additional lunch room to keep students separated.

  3. Very nice gym at Nicholas, Holmes played there in a holiday tournament. I grew up in Nicholas County, still visit Carlisle frequently, I live in Florence and usually go 75 to Williamstown , take 36 to Cynthiana and plenty of food options out on 27 , then take about 30 minute drive via rt  36/ 32 to Carlisle, yes not a lot of options after 6, the shell station has a subway.  Good luck to all the teams.

  4. Final from Ft. Mitchell,  very good game until late fourth quarter, Holmes was up 68 to 53 with a minute left, Beechwood made a late run in the last minute of the game, looks like Holmes will play Holy Cross at the Finn in the districts and Beechwood plays Covington Catholic. Nice game today from David Commadore as he had either 20 or 22.

How's the popcorn at Holmes?  That's the most pressing question here.

I agree, you came to the right guy here, I jokingly tell everyone that I go around the state rating popcorn, people will text me when Holmes is on the road and ask my rating, I send a pic and rating  to them, I told the concessions lady at Henry Clay a few years ago that Scott County was number 1, she took my popcorn back, added salt and the butter looking salt and said, now try it. Sorry Mason County folks, I know your proud of your popcorn, and it’s very good and a nice serving, but I still have Scott County number 1, if it’s micro wave , I don’t even bother getting it. Ok as far as Holmes popcorn goes, it depends on who makes it, different sports organization run it different nights , I guarantee if Softball has concessions,  ( I’m the coach) it will be buttered, salted and fresh, I rated it a 7.5 the other night. Enjoy the popcorn, I highly recommend the hot Mets , but get a cold drink with it. Enjoy the tournament, safe travels.

Now that I have aired my grievances and fear mongered, while I don’t like the tournament at Holmes it will be “interesting”.

    Pros:

    - If my team makes it to the finals I can take a personal day and spend the night at Hotel Covington before.  Then go to Smoke Justis.
    - It will allow and entire new audience of people to watch 10th Region Basketball and the teams in it.

    Cons:

    - Parking

    - No plans to live-stream the games

    - Seating will not allow for crowds to social distance and space out.

    - Not a 10th Region school, but Holmes will make $4,500 from having our tournament plus thousands in concessions.

The $4500 number is not correct, Holmes will get concessions.

  7. I can see both sides of the debate here, yes some very nice gyms in the tenth region, was just in Nicholas County’s, very impressive. Travel is an issue in the tenth and always will be. But it’s Scott’s turn, they could have said ok, we are holding it at Scott, people would complain it’s to small, so they moved it to Holmes, just a few miles north, Holmes has held many region games, even back in the day when students showed up. Holmes held the region last year when the bank of Ky arena ask out of the contract, some one mentioned parking, for those of you not familiar with Holmes, one block past the driveway into Holmes, turn right, some parking behind the school and street parking as well. I have did pa at Holmes for many years and it’s been years since there was standing room only, I hope it works out and wish everyone save travels and a great tournament.

  8. Holmes will be honoring Mr. Huhn on Friday January 21st, Gary has taught and been the Holmes basketball and football score keeper since the mid 60s, has over 1500 basketball games, there will be a meet and greet in the Hartman room before the game, which is across from the concession stand, the podium will forever be know as the Gary Huhn podium. There will be a presentation between the JV and Varsity games and will be honored by the Covington board of education, everyone is welcome.

I'll try clarify.  The District/Regionals are these schools cash cow, play them at a venue with the most seating.

The 10th region has three venues larger than Holmes.

In the 35th district again HC only holds 750 people with no parking, CCH will be filled the band and student sections.  Play it at Holmes.

And I agree, 35 th should be played at Holmes ever year, and Covington Catholic likes it at Holmes as well, when it’s their time to host, they usually move it to Holmes.

After speaking to some people in the know, looks like it will happen.  Will be made official in about a week.

This reminds me Beechwood hosting the 35th District a couple of years ago in a 750 seat gym.

Not sure I understand the comparison, With Beechwood and Holmes, I think Holy Cross will host districts this year.  Holmes was approached a few weeks ago about hosting the 10 th, I hope it works out for everyone, most of the Holmes staff that works the games will be at Bank of Ky, since it has been there, Holmes staff have pretty much been doing a lot of the behind the seens  work.
