  1. Conner 8th defeated Carroll Co. by 50, and beat Holmes 58-21 in the Campbell Co. Classic today. This team is playing very well right now.

Conner may not lose a game this season, very good team and well coached. I thought Conner's coach could have took the press off both teams a little sooner. He was pressing Holmes in the 4th quarter with a 30 point lead. Not very good sportsmanship Woody!!

  2. Do you know what 6th grade teams (only) are signed up to play at SOAS? When does that league start and is it a Sunday league? Thanks for any information. Also, is the league divided according to the talent level?

    6th grade

    Wolfpack

    Tardevils

    Sharks

    NKYWildcats 5th grade

    Magic 5th grade

    Legends

    Tri State Warriors probably

  3. I think kids should be able to play up!! If you have a fifth grader good enough to play or even start for a school 6th grade team. You are holding that child back but not letting him on the team. The only reason why they don't is so parents of a cut kid, doesn't cry, moan and groan. I know in Kenton County the 4th and 5th grade school league is a fundamental league. It is a necessary league to teach the kids not in AAU to play the game. But every school has a hand full kids that are a little more developed and they need something else. At my son's school I begged the AD to let me grab 7 kids and go play in the SOAS school league. She wouldn't give me any gym time for these kids if we played there. You would really think the high school coaches would get more involved in this, but they don't. Walton does and outstanding job with their youth leagues. Schools should copy what they are doing. But this has to start at the top with the high school coaches and AD.

  4. In 6th grade I believe Ockerman and Campbell Co. will have very strong teams. Ockerman has Beau Downs, Thad Moss, and Logan Turner. Campbell will have Trent McGovney, Matt Wilson, Owen Workman, and Griffin McHugh. Blessed Sacrament and Highlands should also be pretty strong. Highlands will be huge on the inside..:thumb:

Okerman will be even stronger is Dalton Turner comes out of hiding and plays. Big strong kid to go with Moss. I heard he wasn't playing anymore for some reason.

  5. Glad you seem to know so much about the so-called "Tar Heel" experiment. I would not be so quick to give up on a group of kids that just finished 8th in the country vs. the "best of the best". Trust me, there will be a 5th grade Tar Heel team next year. Additionally, regardless of what teams these boys played for previously, they obviously had some excellent coaching from McNeil to come together as one unit and find a way reel off some victories in a National tournament.

Just know what Charlie told me. Wasn't trying to cause trouble.

  6. I spoke with Charlie Hawkins (NK Wildcats coach) and he was extreamly happy with 8th place at nationals. He also said he would be happy when the Wildcats get back together in a month or two. Looks like this Tarheel experiment is over. Congrats to all the boys, they desearve it.:thumb:

  7. Anybody making the trip to Lexington this week to watch nationals? NKY Tarheels will be playing. I am going down at least one day. Most of these kids are the NK Wildcats and the rest the Wolfpack. They have evening games all week. Should be some great young talent down there.

  8. Northern KY Tarheels and Kentucky Elite both have advanced Saturday afternoon out of their consolation bracket. KY Elite will be playing to place either 7th or 11th to finish the tournament. NKY Tarheels will be playing for either 8th or 12th place to finish the National Tournament 13U. Congratulations to both teams for making it this far. Both KY teams will be definate places for the top twelve teams in the nation. Good representation for Kentucky boys basketball at this age group.

    Congrats to both teams!!:dancingpa

  9. Looks like both teams should win their pool games again today. Tarheels with North Alabama Crusaders and the Elite with New Jersey King Street Kings. Both teams should make it out of pool play undefeated. The only hurdle I see is the Wisconsin Playground Elite in the Tarheel pool. They look pretty tough but if Hatton and Mcneil and company come to play, they should be alright.

  10. Well, I think that you only hear about the bad. As far as your 80/20 analogy, I think that the overwhelming majority of AAU coaches are in it for the right reasons. Sure there are bad apples. That goes without saying. But to throw the whole lot of AAU coaches under the bus is laughable, considering that you discount all of the coaches that start from the year kids are 9U through high school. Frankly, I'd be willing to bet that there are more coaches that are in it for the right reasons, that aren't displaced or disgruntled former high school coaches. We can fall behind the 8 ball with other states and let states like Indiana push the limits of their players and we will see the gap widen. As for mine, if they are able and want to play, I'll give them every opportunity to get better via AAU basketball.

    Well said.:thumb:

  11. Good luck to the Tarheels and KY Elite at the U13 Nationals. I look for the Elite to be in the hunt for the championship.

I do have one question. How did the Tarheels get a national bid? They didn't compete at state and from my understanding of AAU, you have to compete in your "district" (Kentucky is one district) championship. Anyone???

James called AAU and explained the break up between them and the team they joined with. I forget their name. They participated in the state with them, then broke up. AAU gave them an at large bid.

  12. My top 7 varsity coaches are:

    David Henley

    Mike Listerman

    Dave Faust

    Mike Flynn

    Jim Hicks

    Tim Sullivan

    Rick Shumate

I have a hard time putting Henley at the top of this list. I know they won state and only loss one game. But talent wins a lot of games, coaching wins a lot of close games. I don't know how many close game they had, not counting the state finals. With the talent or lack of talent he seems to have every year. I think Jim Hicks does about as good as of job as you can do. His teams always seem to have a plan to exacute against their opponet. Where as Holmes, Dixie and Cov Cath just seem to come and play. Holmes just seems to have the talent to win those games. I will say this about Henley, his teams will guard you, tip to buzzer. Maybe that is his game plan. Play as hard as you can on the defensive side and I will let you do freelance on the offensive side.
