  1. You're right. It's a long drive from Whitesburg to Stanton, and vice-versa. But if they're going to allow the tournament to be at one of these schools, then they have to allow it to be at the other. Both are at extreme ends of the region. And Powell has the advantage over Letcher Central of having more seating (Letcher doesn't seat much more than Estill County) and better parking and exit routes after the game. As a matteer of fact, the only host that can equal Powell in parking and quick exits after the games is Perry.

As far as central location, Breathitt County is the most centrally located of any of the host, not Hazard or Hindman.

    :thumb:

  2. No real surprises here. The draw will be interesting. The drive to Powell County will be brutal for the 53rd and 54th.

Really--would it not be brutal if it was the other way around--same distance for the other half of the region when they have to travel to Letcher, Knott or that terrible box on the hill in Perry County.:ohbrother:

  3. Breathitt returns 1 solid contributor from last season (Dakota Ritchie). Taulbee, Haddix, Terry, Allen and a few others return from last season but did not average more than a few points/rebounds/assists per game last season.

Nick Noble returns but is immediately hampered by an injured ankle. Jeremy Congleton (who sat out last season after transferring from Owsley) may also be injured.

Added to this mix is a new (but familiar) head coach (Doug Noble) and a few players who didn't play last season (namely football star Channing Fugate).

This is predictably a team that would take some time to mesh; a lot of new things to adjust to.

This Breathitt team will no doubt get better by seasons-end and are likely to pull off an upset or two along the way.

Congleton "may" be injured---is he or isn't he???

Maybe they will---but I have my doubts?????

  5. Ah! Ha! Wonder if Noble might apply for the Powell County job now that Lively--his good friend--it moving up to the school administration ranks. IMO--he should ---take all the kids to Stanton everyday--at least they might give him a teaching job down there?????????????? And his dad could seek election on the Breathitt Board---That would be GREAT!!!:dancingpa

  6. I'm not sure. I was only giving my opinion to how they may think about their future. But I'm not 'in the know' anymore, as I once was. That's what retirement will do for you.:D

:thumb:I heard today that Charlie Davidson is the new Head Coach for the Owls. It was decided to hire from within the current teaching staff in the district--as I understand.

According to those close to the situation,

Coach Davidson has proven himself as someone with great integrity, hard-working, dedicated, and has the respect of both students and staff.

Congratulations and Good Luck to Coach Davidson!:dancingpa

  7. I don't know how to look at this situation anymore, but I'm trying my best to kind of see where Coach Noble is coming from. I realize that he told the Owsley County administrators that he would stay around for a while. And that was very, very important to the Owsley officials, because they had been on a roller coaster of coaches in recent years, which is not the best of ways to build a program.

But maybe Doug's Breathitt roots are so overwhelming that he wants to go back regardless. Both he and his wife are graduates of the school. And maybe the 60 mile round trip everyday with gas prices as they currently are is also a factor in his thinking. Maybe these kind of things add up, and maybe one can change their feelings toward a system that has ignored them several times in the past. I'm trying to understand all these things, but at the same time I'm an Owls fan through and through, and I want my county and kids to be treated fairly. This has gone on too long. The dead period is almost over and summer practice and camps will be the norm until schools start back in early August. The Owsley people, and Breathitt's for that matter, need to know what the future holds...and soon.

You are 100% correct Professor!!! I am not a bit surprised by the actions of the Breathitt administration--my surprise comes from the way Doug has handled this situation.

  8. I cannot believe it--wait--yes I can believe it----July 15th--A decision being made on the last day allowed by law in order for a teacher to be released from a contract--if the sending school should choose to not release a teacher. Today's talk indicates that the Board Chair has given in to the hiring of Noble as the coach at BHS--simply for the politics and the fact that Whitaker's price tag was way out of the budget range??? From the talk that I have heard, the Owsley folks are anxious to move on in a new direction---and Breathitt's deliberate delay has not delayed the plans for a Noble replacement--afterall, if someone does not appreciate having a secure coaching position and prefers to be a second choice for another team--good luck! Hope it last for at least one season!:dancingpa The sad part is what this type of action does to KIDS!

  9. Okay, so if noble doesnt want or get the job who does it go to? Lively or someone else. Those are the two Breathitt would settle for, or wil they have to settle for someone else?

I heard that the administration is seeking Coach Whitaker from Hazard, along with the 2 young athletes that he would bring???But I doubt they will make the move to Jackson---politics will win out--IMO.

  10. Here is what I have heard.

The Fugate family doesn't want Doug because that means Channing doesn't get to be the point guard and he will not play for Doug. He left the middle school to return to Perry County because they were not satisfied with Doug as a coach. The Allen family wants Ryan to run the point, so they will not be satisfied with having Doug back and Nick at the point. I guess it will come down to which family has the most influence. Fugate and Allen are great football players and they want to keep football on top, but Doug can bring Nick and other family members to help improve the basketball team. It will be interesting to see who wins the battle.

I heard that a Noble, other than the current Board chair, might run for a Board Position--hiring a Noble as coach would prevent this from being possible---Another political battle????????????????????????

  11. Doug hasn't yet been introduced as the coach. I'm not sure what the hold up is but I've been told by many in the admin that Doug will be the coach.

I hear that there is some confusion among the board--some want Doug and others do not. It is all about politics from what I hear. It is not about hiring a great coach or even about getting kids back into the school district that have gone other places---it is nothing but POLITICS!!!!!!!!!!!!All parties should bewareeeeeeeeeeee! Everyone will figure it out--but it may be too late for some!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:fire:

  12. If they really liked Doug, they could just find someone to hold the seat warm...give Breathitt County a couple or three years and they'll get rid of him and you all can have him back. :D

I doubt that will happen-- with Owsley wanting him back--the community is not really happy about this situation. I hear that the folks in Booneville had been told this would never happen as long as the administration at Breathitt was as it is now. So they are just a bit dismayed!

  13. Has Noble been offered the job? I was under the impression that he and some others had applied, including former Bobcat Kyle Lively. This thread makes it seem as if he has the job if he wants it. I think there will be more to apply before the 30 day period is up.

I would hope that Arch goes ahead and hires or has the BHS Principal after consulting with his council hire someone as soon as possible. I am sure he knows who is going to be hired right now. There are waivers for the 30 day period--he could have already had someone hired if he so choosed--so he should get it done so the rumors will stop and the kids can get on with their summer basketball after the dead period coming up for the next two weeks.

I am tired of the political games played by some--It is a bit ironic that those blue banners hang around Breathitt County marketing the philosophy "Where KIDS Come First"---I belive there could be a typo--and the 'FIR' should really be 'LA'???

  14. One thing everyone is missing is Doug must do what is best for his family. Yes he has tremendous support from the Owl faithful and Owsley should be proud of how they rallied behind Coach Noble. With all the history behind Doug at Breathitt being on the wrong side of the admin. on the hiring of a basketball coach, you have to look ahead and notworry about yesterday. I am sure Doug will look Arch in the eye and get a commitment of support before taking things into consideration. But look at the drive he has to make everday and there are health issue in his family he will consider. It is widely thought that Nick wants to play football also. Whatever Coach Noble does I am sure it will for the right reasons and I wish him all the best.

Yes--I am sure he will do what he feels is best for his ENTIRE family. Looking the supt. in the eye---"politics are politics". I know that Doug has been down this road before---need not say anything more. As a Bobcat fan, I do not trust some folks to be completely honest with any new coach---the administration will figure out what is best for their current "political situation" and they will act accordingly--based on What is BEST for them--not a new coach and not the kids!!!
