  1. I don't think there is any doubt that something has to happen offensively and it has to be in the passing game. You are right, the Beechwood offense is old school. Beechwood's best plays came when they threw the ball. Both TD's were on passes. There should have been more of it. Look at Mayfield's offense last night. Talk all you want about how great Jackson is, but he became much more effective in the second half when Mayfield finally got the passing game on track. You have to face the fact that football is a passing game today on all levels. I really thought the Tigers were going to open it up last night. Did they throw one pass on first down? Did they throw one pass on 2nd down and less than 10? They threw the ball when they had to and that is no way to run an offense. They couldn't run the ball last year versus Mayfield with great backs and an excellent line led by a tackle who is starting as a freshman for a D1 school. Yet they still seemed focused on the run. Pass the ball or get ready for more pain versus the top notch teams on the schedule.

The same could be said about Highlands in many games this year, but with them, you've always got the threat of the pass. The beauty of having an effective passing game, is that you can pick & choose how to deploy it. Regular season against an inferior team, throw it around and work on some things. Tight game in the playoffs, throttle it back and play ball control. Either way, the defense has to respect it. As soon as the safeties begun to suck in, here comes the long ball.

  2. I agree. I hate when threads deteriorate into bad official/sportsmanship rants, and this one has started early. I wasn't able to go to the game and just want to know who played well and who did the scoring. Anything else is irrelevant to the thread.

Donovan McCoy was absolutely at his best tonight. How many third and long situations were converted with beautiful passes? I literally lost count.

Anything else is irrelevant to the thread.

I have to humbly disagree with you on this. I was there, and the white hat was an absolute embarrassment. The things he chose to overlook vs. the things he chose to call, well, I don't know how to explain it.

  3. You are exactly correct IMO TOG. Kids all played hard today. Darn fun game to be at. Tough way for it to end for the JV Colonels.

And while I'm glad they're gettiing lights, there is no more pretty place to watch a football game in the fall in NKY than a Saturday afternoon on the visitor side at Cov Cath. Notre Dame Academy on the hill in the background, leaves changing color, slight nip in the air, fireball flying everywhere....

    Fireball is football in auto-correctland.

  4. To me at least, it wasn't quite fair to the "D" kids parents to take the brunt of a lot verbal abuse that was thrown those kids way today.

I for one didn't see either a HHS or CovCath "D" player quit, lay down or stop playing. What I did see was a group of kids for each "D" to be a lot smaller than those on the "O" side of the ball and the "O" side like they are suppose to took advantage of it!

Just because the "D" for both teams got beat and beat badly time after time, it wasn't because of a lack of effort or trying.

  5. Awww boo-hoo. Some coaches yell and some calmly coach. When are we going to stop babying todays players? You think coaches don't use these tactics in college? At the NAIA/D3 level. It only gets worse the further along you play. Football is a tough game played by tough people, coached by tough minded people.

    One number for you: 2012.

  6. Leatherneck, your thoughts are at the heart of a question that I was pondering. Does Highlands have 22 "Great players"? Or, do they "Develop 22 great players". My thoughts was, Highlands probably has 11 players ready to play, but instead of starting those 11 both ways, they take a little more time and develop the others so that they can platoon. Would you say that is a fair assumption?

I definitely won't answer for LN, but if there's a program anywhere in the country that does a better job than Highlands of developing the players it has, I'm unaware of it. To watch the growth these kids make during their four years at HHS is unbelievable. You simply cannot overstate this point.

  7. What time was the game yesterday?

Game time was a source of consternation for many a Highlands fan as they arrived for the 7:30 start time only to see 1:00 minute remaining in the first quarter. I guess the decision was made to start early since both teams & officials were ready to go, and the kids had a decent bus ride home ahead of them. Not sure though.

First off, beautiful facilities for Bryan Station. Not sure how old the new school is, but the entire facility is gorgeous.

Pretty good football game, with as earlier posters said, Josh Watson running wild. Hadn't seen the kid play in a while & forgot how fast he is. Glad to see him back from injury so strong. Of course he couldn't have done that w/out the awesome job done by the O-line. The holes weren't big, they were cavernous - '73 Cadillac Eldorado wide.

Defense played pretty well against a very slippery BS QB in the first half, but since I only saw the second quarter....

In the second half, a different QB took over for BS - #12 - and did well, but they weren't able to move the ball like in the first half. Highlands D stepped up and made some nice stops. Ayers (#36) was in the QB's face seemingly the entire 4th quarter. Nice contributions from HHS players on both sides of the ball in the second half to seal the win.

One take away was the poor attendance by BS fans at home. You've got a very nice team there. Give 'em the support they deserve!

  8. I'm sitting here watching Arizona host St. Johns in super regional play, and can't help but think how they'd never be able to play the game if these were Kentucky high schools.

I know it generally doesn't come into play until late in our season, but seems like an adjustment is needed for baseball as compared to football.

  9. Very nice win boys! You got the bunts down, turned the heat on and took the fight to 'em. Very nice pitching by Schultz, Jones and then Murray closing it out. Enjoy this one tonight, take care of academics the next two days & come back to Florence Wednesday night ready to play!

    Keep it goin' Birds!

  10. at McNick

Good game as the Birds left the tying run at 2B in the top of the 7th. FR Jones and SO Cochran pitched for the Birds. Key hit was a 2 out bases loaded single by McNick in the 4th to keep them out front. Some nice pitching and defense by the Birds to get out of a bases loaded, 0 out situation in the bottom of the 6th without any scoring by McNick and keep the deficit at 3.

Birds are off today and next play at Simon Kenton at 7:00 PM on FRI.

P.S. They have some very nice facilities coming together at McNick. Looked like the turf football field was brand new.

HHS x SK game moved to 5:00.
