  1. I quit reading after page 9 due to the redundancy of comments, so sorry if I missed it, but I think everyone is missing the big-picture point here:

If you're a legit D1 talent, and Patrick most definitely was coming out of HHS, then GO TO A TRUE FOOTBALL SCHOOL with a proven track record and system. I've watched so many promising kids from KY get derailed in college by letting in-state loyalty cloud their judgment of what's truly best for their future. I love that they're all committed to where they came from, but IMO, that doesn't justify passing up better opportunities in established programs that will give you a better chance of success.

  2. Hope it is a trivia question some day (because I know the answer :)). "Who got the 1st win in the history of HHS Frosh Baseball?"

How about how many Scott base runners were caught stealing or picked off in that first HHS Frosh baseball game?

  3. SG ESQ - Couldn't have said any of that better myself. Thanks for putting into words what so many of us feel.

    * You all are always welcome to join us on the hill with the BSCC. That includes you MV (the "Godfather" of the Diamond Club) but please note that I won't have any of your craft beers. I'm too much of a simpleton redneck :)

It would appear you've made me an offer I can't refuse. See you next year!

  4. For all you young pitchers out there watching the game, there is much more to the position than throwing the ball to the catcher. You must field your position. Niehaus stood and watched twice allowing a run to score each time.

Dixie played very sloppy baseball tonight, and it cost them. Way to many errors and mental mistakes to overcome. Highlands capitalized and made some great plays on defense. It was Highlands night even though they only recorded 3 hits.

The plate ump tonight was horrible both ways. His zone changed with every pitch. I sat down the line, so I couldn't see the pitches obviously, so I watched how the players react. All pitchers and catchers were shaking their heads all night. And the HBP at the end, questionable. He didn't make an attempt to move, but I also don't think he stuck his leg out over the plate to get hit. And the safe call at first may have been the worst call of the night.

The hit by pitch was not at all questionable. Kid stuck his knee way out there. Could be clearly seen by everyone sitting behind the plate. I don't blame him for trying, but the right call was made.

  5. I believe that I personally saw the first varsity appearance of every pitcher currently on HHS's roster, and Kreeger's was one of the best that I can remember. Seemed to show no nerves at all.

Oddly enough, I can remember at least two others who also entered with bases loaded for their first appearance.

  6. In my opinion, you cannot adequately answer Ru's question without first defining the purpose of high school sports, and maybe also without defining the purpose of youth sports in general. I don't think you'd have too much difficulty gaining consensus on this board that the place of youth sports in our society has gotten out of wack, and if we'd all take a step back & re-evaluate the purpose of sports to begin with, Ru's question would probably answer itself.

We all love our winning programs, but are they serving the purpose they were established for?

  7. I have heard that before and I think it depends. If you think all good players come from and play select you would be wrong. If you say the competition is a bit higher in select you would be right. If the coaches are good, workouts and practices well thought out, and outside tourneys are played it can be very good. (Knothole that is)

Spot on. There are plenty of "travel" & "select" teams out there that play at or below D1 Knothole level, especially at the middle & elementary school levels.

There are only so many kids playing baseball in the greater Cincinnati area. Of that body of kids, today as compared to 20 years ago a greater percentage of them play SWOL as compared to Knothole, but that doesn't mean that a greater percentage of them are truly select level players, they're just playing in a different league.

  8. I wasn't referring to the NCC game, I was talking about the Dixie game. They greatly outnumbered Dixie students as well, which again should be commended. Love the fact that so many students came out to support their team but if they cannot control themselves, I would prefer they stay home. Again, this is not football or futbal.

My appologies. Just figured you were talking about the Regional Championhsip game. I was at the Dixie game also, but don't really remember anything going on. My guess is you might be talking about kids between the backstop & the PA booth, but the Dixie & Conner games are muddling together in my head.

  9. It wasn't this year but the Highlands fans from last year's regional tourney were way beyond obnoxious! I salute them for the # of students that came out to support their team but they need to be reminded that this is a baseball game, not a European soccer match!

Man, am I tired of hearing about this one. Absolutlely nothing went on in the Highlands student section at this game that doesn't go an at every Friday night football game in October all over KY. The only thing that made this any different was the sport, and the fact that the HHS students outnumbered NCC about 20 to 1.

Everybody wants more students to come out for baseball games, and every time it happens, we get nonstop whining about what the student section did.

  10. So did this call have any bearing on the outcome of the game?

It had a significant impact on the game, although it wasn't the most well played game the Birds have had this year.

Disclaimer - my son was on the mound.

First the rule: Rule 4.03(a) states "The catcher shall station himself directly back of the plate. He may leave his position at any time to catch a pitch or make a play except that when the batter is being given an intentional base on balls, the catcher must stand with both feet within the lines of the catcher's box until the ball leaves the pitcher's hand. PENALTY: Balk."

So let's be clear right off the bat (pun intended) - the Birds were not attempting an intentional walk, so the rule was totally misapplied, and as we all know, in high school we don't throw the pitches on an intentional walk anyway.

Bases loaded, less than 3 balls although the exact count at the time escapes me. Pitch-out is called to go after the kid at first. While the pitcher is in his wind-up, the catcher hops up and to the right to catch the pitch-out, which he does & delivers the ball to the first baseman. The home plate ump immediately yells out "catcher's balk," and instructs all base runners to move ahead one spot, giving Scott a run. When questioned, the ump says the catcher can't be out of the catcher's box when the pitch leaves the pitcher's hand.

You make the call. This ump has issues.

  11. Nice win for the Birds on a beautiful March day at Highland Park!

Well done by Jones after a scary near miss by an absolute bazooka shoot back up the middle by Tiberi. Nicely finished off by J. Ligget also.

And a big congrats to E. Allen on his first Var dinger going just right of center only yards from where his previous big double landed. Glad to have you back young man!
