  1. WOW! Col. Mike, you are right in one regard, the issues have been blown out of whack. I wonder why know one seems to think that the coach nmay have brought some of this on himself? Not by not playing kids, but but not communicating with parents. Being defensive all of the time. Not repecting his players. II had parents tell me that this past season was about him winning and not about the kids. It does take 2 to tango.

It has been seaid that a "group of idiot parents" caused this. I heard that 41 parents out of 64 took the time to fill out the survey. That means the group is over half of the team.

Col. Mike, I don't believe the administration cares about a successful football program. They will only look at resumes of those certified in Current Teaching openings. So they do not look for the best leader for these student athletes, just the best"English" teacher that may want to coach football. That does not denote caring about successful football. 3 years ago Higgins and Lawson were not even given a look because they taught math and south did not have math openings. At the end of the year I was told that they had 2 math openings. So they could have had Coach of the Year folks, and strong coaches, but they chose their 3rd 2st year coach.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but the school did not fire the coach, he quit. No I have been told that his attitude towards kids that quit was that he would say that they did not need quitters. So, would the same hold true here?

I talked with a SO guy at Nike COY and I think there were problems caused by all sides and it is easy to blame the parents. He gave me some issues that I could not understand how the blowup would not have happened sooner. He never talked bad about the coach, just wanted to understand some things and was not given the chance.

Everybody on here can make the jokes, but they really don't know all of the issues and problems that existed in that program. I don't know if we ever will really know. It seems that everybody that is in coaching or education defends the coach, parents will defend the parents. so.....

Footballisking, this would be a great time to finally share the coaches issues and problems. What exactly was the communication problem? I think Lawson is a social studies teacher and not a math teacher.

  2. If it's only a few vocal and negative parents that are causing coaches to leave, shouldn't the ire be directed towards the AD and the principal for letting the few dictate things and not parents in general? Why be upset with the fact a survey was done? If the results indicate that just a few parents are upset and vocal, why wouldn't the AD and principal make it clear that they stand squarely behind the coaches?

Leatherneck, if a survey isn't a bad idea, since you have a copy of the survey everyone is talking about, why don't you go ahead and send it out to the parents at Highlands?

  3. That isn't entirely correct. I'm quite sure that this was the intent of some of the parents involved. But I know for a fact that some of the parents involved DIDN'T want the coaches to leave. These particular individuals were among the coaches' staunchest defenders. They honestly saw the survey as a potential fix to what they perceived as communications problems. I don't agree with their chosen solution, but at least - for these individuals - their heart was in the right place.

Like I said, I'm quite sure there were some disgruntled parents in the mix - I'm not naive, and when you struggle to get wins, there's always some. And it wasn't something I would have wanted to see happen at a school my son went to...not a very good idea at all.

But my point remains the same, regardless. The South bashing on this thread has gotten ridiculous, and has ceased to be grounded in any fact. No spring ball? Be serious. Not serious about sports? Well, everyone has an opinion on what's "serious", but their athletic successes are numerous and their facilities are superb.

And like I said: 1) I'm not a South alum, 2) I have no kid at the school, and 3) I don't even live in the South district. But I do think the school has been unfairly represented here because of a small handful of idiot parents.

Since you are in the know here, tell us what exactly was the communication problem between the coach and the parents? How would the survey fix it?

This would be a great time to give insight to exactly what the parent issues were with the coach. What exactly did they want to happen that the coaching staff didn't communicate with them?

  4. In my opinion (which doesnt count for much) building a successful/competitive football program is different than having a good soccer team, wrestling, or basketball. Last time I heard, wrestling was an individual sport. Football just takes a total team effort in the film room, on the practice field, and during games. Plus, parents have to back the coaches in pusing their kids to work hard, be at practice, listen to the coaches, etc.

Does having a Mr. Soccer translate into having support for athletics? Didnt the soccer coach just leave and go somewhere else? You would think after having Mr. Soccer and having support, you would want to stay? Of course the Administration wants athletics to Win, but they don't do anything to support that. Otherwise, they would have not entertained the idea of a survey. If they did, why in the world has basically every football coach at South Oldham been ran out of town?

  5.

Seriously, the word is the number of applicants exceeded 50. They are interviewing now, and some of the applicants are extremely interesting, from what I'm hearing off-the-record.

I follow all three Oldham schools very closely, and deal with the three schools coaches and administrators constantly.

My honest opinion is that this is a golden opportunity for someone. You don't get many opportunities to become a head coach at a school hungry for football success that has this much going for it in terms of facilities, personnel, and numbers of kids.

Not trying to start an argument or crack jokes, but who at the school is "hungry for football success"? The administration? From things I heard, they could care less if sports win or lose. The parents? From everything posted on here and heard in the community they just care about their child having his playing time. The players? Safe to say all players want to win, but do they have the mindset, parent pushing them the right way, and work ethic to really get success?

  6. Whoever gets the job as Head Coach, they will have to log onto an online survey site each day before practice and in-between quarters during games. Parents will basically vote on type of practice and in-game play calling. They ditched the text message voting idea because it took to long to text.

  7. I've heard they may not even hire a coach, but rather are going to pass out a survey to a select few parents and use a rotation of parents as coaches on Friday nights. This way they can't hang a coach! I say this in jest of course, but it sure would be fun to watch!

The starting lineup would change each week depending on who parents were running the show. Just joking of course, just like the Leach comment.

  8. I think most coaches are there early and stay late. There might be a few expections, but I would gather that most high school coaches put in as much time as Beatty does at Trinity. Some might put in more because they dont have the support system that Trinity has. Like doing laundry, mowing grass, etc.
