  1. Do you think the 12 teams that the Colonels have beat this year would agree with that? Yes the Colonels had a bad game last night again, but they also are capable of playing very well when they are at full strength. I also think I heard that their schedule is in the top 15 or so as far as toughest in the state. They have beat some quality teams this year. They were also very much in the game for the majority of their losses IMO.

    Not a chance.

  2. I'd like you to review the senior leadership shown on the floor last night because I did not see any. The only leader between JV and Varsity that I saw was Brett Riedinger. He's the General out there and the best shooter in the program. I'd give him a shot to play. In your previous post you mentioned major problems breaking the press, but a much bigger problem is this team has major problems with lack of respect for their coaches. This dates back starting in 2006 and the class of 2007 was one of the worst. A scene on the team bus after a St. Henry loss comes to mind. The disrespect happens over and over and the coaches have to address it. As long as this team talks back to coach, refuses to acknowledge the coaches coming out of the game, walking to and from the court for time outs it's going to lose most of the time. I thought this team was going to be different. I was wrong. I have never in my 31 years watching high school basketball seen a coach treated so disrespectively and they do it to a guy that tries so hard to be liked by his players.

I completely agree with the lack of respect for the coach. It's embarrassing to the School, Basketball Program, Coach, and Individual. There is no reason for that however once it began in that class of 06 to 07 it hasn't stopped.

I think the punishment for these occurrences needs to happen. Even if it means sitting a kid for a game. The message needs to be sent that you can't represent the program in that manner.

  3. The issue at CCH as of right now is the guard play. Thelen is carrying the load and Wellbrock is the only one helping. Evans and Wilson seem to be the only ones who have stepped up scoring wise here and there but nothing is consistent.

IMO, the reason CCH has been declining is due to player development. The two leading scorers and most productive players for CCH this year are Thelen and Wellbrock both of which play AAU for Shining Stars. If you look at the rest of the roster I'm not so sure any of them play any AAU ball at all. Evans has but then again this is his first year playing on the High School team.

Now if you look at players such as Votel, Nestheide, Tierney, Grimes, Jacobs, Shover, Shmerge, and Bondick are all players who played aau and focused mainly on basketball. (Maile exception but just a gifted athlete and Bovard played football but also ended up playing college basketball) They were dedicated to getting better and most went on to play college and if not had the opportunity too. Look at this years team...Thelen is the only candidate for college ball and Wellbrock possibly.

The talent level, imo, has significantly dropped off. And when you don't have the talent you have to find ways to get around that. However, I think the player development by the coaching staff is poor because really Coach L never had to deal with this issue. He was blessed to have some really good players throughout his years at CCH and now he is in a situation where he just doesn't have those players. CCH year after year would just reload but that just hasn't been the case of late.

I agree with CCH5432 about getting more experience when they players are younger but the problem is that there isn't a competition for starting spots anymore. It's more of a situation where Coach L doesn't really know who to start or who to play and there really hasn't been a set group of individuals who play consistently. Some games Wilson others Huedepol. Some games Klein others Robinson. It seemed as in the years past CCH always had some good players coming up through the system who were competing for varsity spots and then when the seniors graduated they reloaded with those guys. Now you look at the roster and I'm not so sure any soph's dress, maybe 1 a game??

Also, who is the floor general at CCH? Coach L has always been a guard motivated coach as CCh5432 as pointed out several times, haha. If you look at past successful teams they always had a solid guard or two to lead them. Nestheide, Kennedy. Tierney, Jacobs, Bovard. Shover, Bondick.

There is no one out there really taking charge and there isn't really anyone who Coach L has given the ball and trusted him with it.

  4. Not in the 2nd and 3rd quarters.

He has a bright future but has plenty to work on like all young players.

Everyone has stuff to work on however for being just a sophomore he is pretty impressive. Especially if he scores 24 opening night regardless if he did most of his damage in the first, second, or third quarter. The only quarter that will matter at the end of the day is the 4th. Good players and good teams know how to control a lead and close out the game in the 4th quarter.

  5. The expression on the young mans face after 'signing' I think told us enough of his intent. If there is something as you suggest, I would suggest to the coach of the Knights that he informs the other teams in advance from now on, as I am sure there will be teams/players taking much greater exception to his gesture, assuming he is disrespecting them. He is likely to cause somethings to happen during the game, or even after, that no one wants to happen.

I do agree that CovCath will see a lot of zone this year, until they can develop more consistent shooting.

Nothing happened at this game except he from what it sounds like was the leading scorer and led his team to a 20 point victory. I don't agree with what he did especially if his intent was what it sounds like it was however the Colonels, as you are, should have taken this as an insult and did a little better job on him at the defensive end.

  6. LexCath also played a lot of kids early.

I thought Listerman did a good job with his rotation. Still trying to figure out who can play at that level as most coaches are this early in the season.

Early foul trouble hurt CovCath with Thelen having to sit a lot in first half.

Thought CovCath played hard and did a good job moving the basketball. They are going to play very few teams that play off the ball defense like LexCath.

I like this edition of CovCath better than last years team because of the depth and imo better guard play. Don't know if this gets them into upper echelon in the 9th but I think gets them out of the district.

I think you mean better post play rather than guard play?

CCH will have a better chance to get out of the district this year simply because Beechwood and Holy Cross are really weak this year. Beechwood won't contend, Holy Cross may surprise them.

CCH may have more depth in the sense they can afford to play more players because no one player is really better than the other. Imo, it would serve this team better if they would press and get after it on defense. That would give Listerman a reason to go 10 or 12 deep everynight. Also, they are not going to be able to shoot as consistent from outside as teams in the past and they just aren't good enough to slow it down and try to get it to Thelen and Wellbtock down low. (scoring won't be consistent enough) I think it would be nice to see them pressure other teams, get in passing lanes, and make steals for easy buckets. Heck for how good Lex Cath's press is CCH had fewer turnovers and more points of steals then they did.

  7. Holmes is the favorite again but will not run the table, IMO. Same thing was said each of the last two years, and it did not happen.

Whether they run the table the ninth or not I don't think they are concerned as long as their cutting the nets down again.

Would not be surprised one bit if they actually go undefeated in the ninth though.

  8. I really wish we could get these two in a one on one game. Sorrell is the better talent. I really thought Romes was completely out matched against Holmes last year in the District Tournament at HC. Holmes put their stopper on him, and he could not answer. I was courtside. No need to get upset, it's just an opinion like everyone else's.

Were talking about Michael Romes. Brian's older brother.

  9. Did Holmes run the table last year in the 9th? If so, what's their win streak?

They may have lost to Newcath or someone else however whether their win streak is 2 or 50 it doesn't matter because they got that state title to back it up. In the end that's all that matters. I would have to say they are very likely to run the table in 9th after being state champions last year and losing maybe 2 key players and returning alot. Even if they don't run the table in the 9th they are still one of the favorites to win state again.

  10. Sandman has always been bias against Beechwood basketball so this comes as no suprise. Not to mention he has always been a strong supporter of Sorrell. While I think Sorrell is a very good player and think that he is one of the better players in the last few years, Romes was a far better high school player and could play at NKU. Romes was recruited by Wright State and I believe got offered to walk on at Morehead but turned those down to stay close to home. I don't think people know how good Romes really is, but Romes is a very very good basketball player and to say Sorrell is better is just false.

Thank you! Looks like I'm not the only one Sandman. I really think you need to drive across the river and see his game for yourself! Also, he was definitely a better all around player than Sorrell in high school. I think you just might be surprised how good Romes has become.

Sandman won't budge as he is very partial to Sorrell....:sssh:

  11. I believe that Gabbard will be the xfactor of this region. Holmes will have a tough time guarding him IMO, Boone vs Holmes will be a very good game and I can't wait for it. Anyone else ready for the games to get started?

How will they have a tough time guarding him when they have Rico and JJ? Not only that but when Gabbard is driving to the whole there is Elijah waiting down in the lane. Also, don't forget about Avery and Arnold-Rice who both have good size.

Holmes is stacked. They will run the table in the 9th. Team's just won't be able to keep up with their athleticism.

  12. I won't say anything, because I never said Sorrell would get pt or put up numbers at NKU. I think he will do fine, but I never said so.

I also never said Sorrell is a much better player than Romes, until now. He just is. Your affection for Romes is admirable, but there's a reason me, NKU, and apprantely the vast majority of posters on here all think Romes is where he should be.

Perception is reality and I'm not going to try to change what you perceive to be true. You entered this thread with your mind made up, so it's futile.

I will say though that most people have no idea how good you have to be to play at a place like NKU, and how big a difference there is between D-II and D-III. Then there's another world of difference between most D-I schools and D-II. Most people will just never understand that, because they don't get a chance to see it.

I think to say Romes couldn't play at NKU isn't accurate and I said it's my opinion.

As for going up a division yes that certainly is true however that doesn't mean that a D3 player couldn't play D2. Also, I would say there is a bigger jump from D2 to D1 then D3 to D2 imo.

Your perception was already made up that Sorrell in your opinion is a better player as well.

  13. Why would I edit my post? Were there spelling errors, sentence structure problems, or something? :D

I'm not going to debate Sorrell vs. Romes with you, it's futile. And I don't want to disperage what Romes has done, but NKU is on another planet. Romes did what he did playing the Mount's D-III schedule. That doesn't translate well to success in the GLVC.

Ha the humor! And if Sorrell doesn't get pt and put up numbers then what are you going to say.

Whether you want to believe it or not imo Romes can compete on that level and to say sorrell is a much better basketball player isn't true.

But in the whole scheme of things on my initial point NKU missed out on some really good local talent!

  14. You say he had to redshirt last year as if that diminishes his talent level. I believe a redshirt decision has more to do with NKU being abundant at his position rather than saying his skills are not there. One redshirt situation comes to mind that makes my point. I believe Jeff Sheppard redshirted at UK because he was not going to see the amount of PT that he warranted. It obviously had nothing to do with his talent, and everything to do with making the team better for the future. Don't misunderstand my comments here. I really like Romes's game, but I just feel that Sorrell is a more complete BB player.

I think you misread what I was meaning to say. I meant that he red shirted last year therefore he has yet to actually play for NKU. So to say he is where he belongs isn't quite true just yet. He still has to prove himself to get playing time.

  15. You haven't seen Justice player more than just a couple of times then. Justice is quite possibly the quickest player in the state of KY. He showed it in the All-A tournament, the State tournament, and during multiple tournaments that were outside the state of Kentucky. He may be smaller but he is every bit as tough as any other guard in the state as well.

You all are underestimating Justice based on his height which tells me you all have very little knowledge about his actual skills on the court in which he surpasses most of the players in the state of KY. Don't let his height fool you.

I'm letting his height fool me. However at the D1 level there are going to be times where he is going to be match up against players who are just as quick as he is who are much much bigger and stronger. Therefore Rico and Guyn are better suited for the High D1 schools.

  16. I have no skin in this game, but know BB talent when I see it. I must disagree with you on the Romes vs. Sorrell comparison. They are both fine players, but Sorrell is where he belongs and Romes is where he belongs. You can use the HC pipeline as the reason, but I saw both play many times, and Sorrell is the better player. He is at NKU because he can play not because he went to HC.

Also, to say Sorrell is where he belongs is a bit ahead of the game. He had to redshirt last year and he has yet to actually play there. As for Romes he has been a proven player in D3.

I wish Corey the best but that just isn't accurate quite yet.
