  1. It sounded like free throws were the difference, in the 4th Corbin missed theirs for the most part and Boone Co.was something like 12 for 12. To win these type of games you have to hit these thats why they are called FREE. Four games in four days is tough on all the teams. Hard to believe the beating South put on North to win 3rd place.
Yeah free throws were the bigget difference. Boone County also played excellend defence. Boone missed their first FT of the fourth and then knocked down 12 in a row. Boone has a really good team. I look for them to continue to make noise this year.
  2. Well,I would hate to think that he didn't know that was part of it when he signed up for the job.As far as the name of the ref,I am not going to throw anyones name around on the internet but the fact that he is from Corbin came from a couple of Corbin fans that lived near him.

Merry Christmas. Cheer up it is holiday time. Corbin and Boone County were clearly the two teams that should have been in the finals.

  3. Boone County 73, Corbin 71

    Boone County 13 17 23 20 73

    Corbin 10 21 22 18 71

    Boone County (73) – Gabbard 5, McFarland 17, Bogle 0, Cotton 4, Flannery 10, Popp 2, Brown 0, Krohman 21, Earls 14.

    Corbin (71) – Wilson 15, Barley 8, Johnson 16, Smith 9, Manns 10, Cashen 3, L. Crawford 6, Rogers 0, Hendrickson 4

Corbin was 15-27 from the line. Boone County was 18-21. It was a great game.

  4. And now we come full circle, as the reason I used the same team holding the ball was to spur thought and see if there is consistancy which quoting this rule above, to me clearly show it is not consistent. As quoted in the ruling "to wrestle the ball" clearly would take a second or two, not a nano-second. Therefore, does the jump ball rule state that it is to protect players from hurting one another? If not, then I just feel it should be applied the same way if between tie ups between defense and offense as it is applied between two offense players. My point is, the quick whistle penalizes the team that looses the alternative position, therefore, make a true tie up before calling it quick. Yes an injury MIGHT occur on tie up, but I would put forth that an injury is more likely to occur on taking a charge. Just my opinion, there is no right or wrong here, just provoking some thoughts till the next ball game.

I agree with this post. I really feel like jump balls are called to quickly and too often.

  5. Well,I would hate to think that he didn't know that was part of it when he signed up for the job.As far as the name of the ref,I am not going to throw anyones name around on the internet but the fact that he is from Corbin came from a couple of Corbin fans that lived near him.

The the fact that he is from Corbin is hearsay from fans at a ball game? Well then it must be the truth then. Sounds like whomever made the ref assignments made an error then.

  6. Nobody has ever explained how a ref from Corbin is a ref in a Corbin game. But like I said I am not a fan of MC or Corbin, and from a whole lot of unbiased eyes it looked like blatant favoritism.
Nobody has thrown out the refs name or any facts saying that ref is from Corbin either. Like I said, when you are a ref and have fans calling you names and making threats towards you it may make you dislike the other team. That may not be the right thing to do as a ref, but it is certainly possible.

If you were doing your job and someone is threatening to catch you outside after work and etc.. Or if someone is yelling and calling you fat and/or baldy in front of hundreds of other people how does that make you feel? Would it make you want to do things to make those people happy? I think not.

  7. From the NFHS Rules........

Rule 4 Sec 25 Held Ball

    A held ball occurs when:

Art 1... Opponents have their hands so firmly on the ball that control cannot be obtained without undue roughness.

Art 2... An opponent places his/her hand(s) on the ball and prevents an airborne player from throwing the ball or releasing it on a try.

I think the quick whistles are simply a precaution to prevent the undue roughness.

"Opponents have their hands so firmly on the ball" quick whitstle IMO is before the opponents have hands FIRMLY on the ball. There is no rule about a quick whistle to prevent undue roughness. The held ball call is used a lot of times as a cop out call by the ref.

  8. Corbin 63, North Laurel 46

    Corbin 9 13 26 13 63

    North Laurel 11 9 8 18 46

    Corbin (63) – Cashen 8, Watkins 0, Wilson 11, L. Crawford 7, Barley 8, Johnson 8, Smith 7, Hopkins 0, Hendrickson 6, Rogers 3, Manns 5.

    North Laurel (46) – Dalton 4, Shannon 7, Tiller 1, Cottongim 2, Cotton 0, Eversole 0, Seidel 20, Thompson 2, Couch 3, Wardrup 7.

  9. I'm not a Madison Central fan. If you read my post I also said my team benefited from poor officiating last night. I also said Corbin played extremely hard and got a good win. In no way am I attacking Corbin, I have a lot of respect for their program and love to watch them play, they are extremely scrappy. However, I think it is naive to insinuate that the one official last night was not obviously bias in his calls in both games.

I know the officials made some bad calls. I also know that "bald" ref is a human being and when people start yelling deragatory (sp?) comments towards him and calling him names that may get in his head and affect the way he starts seeing things.

I remember once in the third quarter when there was an obvious bad call in Corbin's favor the two coaches looked at each other with sarcastic smiles and traded comments.

Feldhaus said "What was that?" and Pietrowski responded "you have got every call so far." Feldhaus shook his head in agreement and let the argument go.

Bad officiating is part of the game. It happens in every tournament, every game, on everyone's court.

  10. I'm guessing a directive has come down on this subject. They would rather fault on the side of caution and eliminate injuries and scuffles. I would prefer that they wait until its an actual held ball AND nail anyone with a foul that thinks the first guy down is fair game. Too often we see one kid get piled on without a foul being called.

Exactly. You disagree but you really agree. The game should be played the way it was intended by the rules. There should be no held ball called if in fact there is no held ball.

A pile on is a foul and should be called on whoever makes the contact. Calling a jump ball is the easy way out. I tend to think if the refs had to toss the ball up at every jump ball then there would be far less held ball calls.

  11. I was just talking to someone at last nights game about this very situation. Several times the ref called a jump ball without BOTH teams actually having their hands on the ball. Is it fair to player A who dives to the floor and gets possession of the ball to have the whistle blown because player B is diving towards him?

Here is a novel idea...how about it player B is out of control and going to cause injury then he gets called for a foul instead of being rewarded for his wreckless play?

I think sometimes the refs make a jump ball call to avoid making another call.

  12. First things first, officiating is a thankless job. I often hear people complain about the fact that there is a decline the level of officiating in our state. I think that is in direct correlation with the complaining by fans, coaches, and anyone else that thinks they could have done it better.

Officials miss calls, but I rarely have seen a blatant attempt to cheat teams, coaches, and/or players. I find myself often questioning calls (yelling) at the games, but if I was put in some of the situations that officials are put in: Coaches yelling at them, fans screaming at them, players giving them strange looks, and then wondering if when I got home how many people would bad mouth me on certain websites, I would crack under the pressure.

I for one think we should show these guys more support, before we are left with a group that cannot perform to the level of basketball that most of our high school teams are now playing.

I will leave you with this:

Did Madison Central get some bad calls? Yes they did. A few fouls could have been overlooked. A few fouls on Corbin that were not called.

Did Corbin get some bad calls? Yes they did. A time out was given to Madison Central during a crucial part of the game and Corbin had taken possession of the ball. The no call when Madison Central’s big man should have got his 5th foul.

In the end, I still feel that Corbin got themselves to the foul line by driving towars the basket and Madison Central settled for jump shots.

It was a great game in an exciting atmosphere. I think that both teams will improve as the season continues, and could very well make it to Rupp.

Good luck tonight Hounds! Beat the Jags! :thumb:

Great post. I was there and hey, there is always bad calls at games. Refs are human beings that make mistakes. How about the one when Corbin makes a steal and has possession of the ball and THEN MC coach calls timeout???

When you take the ball strong to the basket and the other team is worn out from pressing and playing man defense then you are going to get hacked!

I have never seen as much cry baby stuff over a HOLIDAY TOURNAMENT that doesn't really amount to a hill of beans! What ref in their right mind would try to influence the outcome of a meaningless game. Madison Central is a very good basketball team, but they need to stop reaching in and hand checking so much. Either do that or quit complaining about the refs making the calls.

  13. I agree with you that some of the WV fans on here constantly talk about how they had to overcome the refs, but in this case the fouls were somethin like 22-5. That is extremely lopsided and can't really be argued against.

When you shoot from beyond the 3-point arc all night and never take the ball to the basket then you aren't going to get fouled a lot. From what I understand WV is a very good 3-point shooting team and this is their game plan, so their fans better learn to deal with not shooting many free throws.

They seem to be pretty good so their strategy must work for them.

  14. Actually the difference in the fouls called was simple. South Laurel a much taller team took the ball inside more often and got fouled going to the basket. Walton-Verona came down and jacked up 3-pointers all night long. You are not going to get fouled a lot when you do that.

There were some missed calls that stood out to me, such as when SL was bringing the ball down court and pushed off a couple of times to make room for the dribbler. There was also a couple of calls the went the Bearcats' way.

Both teams played hard. South Laurel started 4 players that don't get to play very much at all. After trailing 13-10 going into the second quarter coach Wright put his real starters back in there and they went on to dominate the second quarter 25-8.

Both of these teams are good teams and deserve credit. I have seen far worse officiating in basketball games. I have seen worse this year.
