  1. What do the top ten cities (over 250,000) with the highest poverty rate all have in common?

Detroit, MI (1st on the poverty rate list) hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1961

Buffalo, NY (2nd) hasn't elected one since 1954

    Cincinnati, OH -(3rd) since 1984

    Cleveland, OH -(4th) since 1989

Miami, FL - (5th) has never had a Republican mayor

    St. Louis, MO - (6th) since 1949

El Paso, TX - (7th) has never had a Republican mayor

    Milwaukee , WI -(8th) since 1908

    Philadelphia, PA -(9th) since 1952

    Newark, NJ -(10th) since 1907

Einstein once said, 'The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.'

It is the poor who habitually elect Democrats .... yet they are still POOR.

"You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.

You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.

You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.

You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.

You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.

You cannot build character and courage by taking away people's initiative and independence.

You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves."

    Abraham Lincoln

Lincoln never, ever said those words...in his time, he would have said the exact opposite!

    Summary of the eRumor:

Alleged quotes from Abraham Lincoln about the poor, the weak, prosperity, workers, class hatred, and character.

    The Truth:

These words are often attributed to Abraham Lincoln, but according to the book They Never Said it: A Book of Fake Quotes, Misquotes, & Misleading Attributions, they are not from Lincoln.

The quotes were published in 1942 by William J. H. Boetcker, a Presbyterian minister. He released a pamphlet titled Lincoln On Limitations, which did include a Lincoln quote, but also added 10 statements written by Boetcker himself.

    They were:

    1. You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.

    2. You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong

    3. You cannot help the poor man by destroying the rich.

    4. You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.

    5. You cannot build character and courage by taking away man's initiative and independence.

    6. You cannot help small men by tearing down big men.

    7. You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.

    8. You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than your income.

    9. You cannot establish security on borrowed money.

10 You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they will not do for themselves.

People who got the pamphlet thought the 10 statements were written by Lincoln and they have been distributed widely under Lincoln's name.

Just more people trying to hate on President Obama through false means...thought you might want to know.

  2. I can't believe how far off most of you are on this answer....Both schools happen to be located in the two most populated areas of KY....and they also happen to closely border other states....They recruit, of course, but they don't have to put a lot of effort into their recruiting. The best of the best go to these schools to win a state championship and to be seen by Div. 1 recruiters...I don't blame them....Had I had that option in high school I would have chosen to go and win a state championship as well...Until KY creates a super class and places these types of schools into that class...This is how big school football in KY will be...

  3. Sounds like a decent conference to me :thumb:. We had a thread on a "mythical" conference here on BGP a while back. Looking at this list, with everyone except Fairview with several common opponets this could be the start of another one.

Don't forget East Carter in all this common opponent talk...The Raiders play Russell, Fairview, Raceland, Greenup, and Boyd County...just thought that East might like to get in on this mythical championship!

  4. Sounds good. I will have to be shopping around some area high school football, but I'm confident Raceland won't disappoint.

Don't give up on East Carter so quick....we might surprise a few people this year...and it isn't the triple option out of the shotgun, it is the wing-t out of the pistol!

  5. After watching all of the teams in the lower bracket recently I'm thinking Russell is the most improved. I'm sure they are on the defensive end. their only question mark is shooting. Sometimes they do not shoot well.

You can't seriously think Russell is better than East defensively!!! I would say the 2 best defensive teams are playing each other in the first game of the tournament!!!

  6. I have known Coach Kidwell for about 25 years and I will agree. He is a class act.

And while we are talking about the EKC, Tim Carper, assistant commish has more integrity in his little finger than most people have in their entire body. When it comes to high school athletics, he is THE MAN!! Nobody and I mean nobody cares more about the high school athlete than Tim Carper

  7. I'm assuming that they had much more depth than Ashland. I guess who each team played prior to that could have had a lot to do with it also. If Valley had a couple of easy games, and Ashland had two tough games. I don't know. Just speculating. Does anybody know who each team played the first two rounds?

Don't remember exactly who either team played the first 2 games but you are right on both counts, I do remember Valley had much more depth and had 2 easier games than Ashland, plus, if remember correctly, Ashland had to play the last game Friday night also.

  8. I wasn't there, but I have trouble believing that Ashland would have beaten Valley, a team that came out of Louisville and finshed as the state runner-up, eight or nine out of 10 times.

It's one thing to think that Ashland may have been the better team, but it isn't like Valley wasn't playing their third game in the same number of days.

I was there and watched all of both teams games, Ashland almost won anyway but they looked like they were playing in a swimming pool full of water about chest deep and Valley was bouncing all over the place. Ashland was the much better team, along with the talent they had they were one of the most disciplined and fundamentally sound teams I have ever seen.

  9. That may be right. I just remembered the 2-2 votes for years that didn't allow seeding (but I would say you are right about the majority to change the setup).

As far as Morgan being unhappy with East, the way I understand it (and please correct me if I am wrong), East's assertion that their showcase loss in Lexington WAS a tournament game played a major role in the original brackets. It wasn't until after Morgan petitioned KHSAA to clarify the definition of a "tournament" that the district had to be decided by a coin flip. If I am wrong on this issue, please correct me.

I understand that East did argue that the Commodore Classic was a 2 day event and shouldn't count but did not provide any false information as SOME people said, the KHSAA made the ruling after looking at schedules and later (and correctly I might add) reversed the ruling. Why would Morgan be any more mad at East than East would be with them. I've heard the AD's met and talked it over with no hard feelings either way.

  10. That may be right. I just remembered the 2-2 votes for years that didn't allow seeding (but I would say you are right about the majority to change the setup).

You are partially correct. East argued that the Commodore Classic was a 2 day event and shouldn't count but did not provide any false information as earlier reported but the KHSAA made the ruling then (correctly I might add), reversed the ruling after further information. Why would that make Morgan any more at East than East would be at them?

  11. I stand corrected, you are correct. My memory failed me slightly. Ballard did win in the finals, correct??

Yes, Jeff Lamp, Lee Raker and Co. took home the title that night. Ashland was obviously very good that year but not real deep, to take nothing away from Valley but it was pretty clear right from the start of that game that Ashland had no legs left. If Valley and Ashland had played 10 times that year with both being rested I'd say Ashland probably would have won 8-9 of them.

And trust me, Ashland's guards were very good and VERY fundamentally sound, they would've handled Elliott's pressure easily. It would be a good game but with Kovach and Harkins inside I'd have to say Ashland probably would've won. They were VERY good defensively and VERY patient offensively.

  12. I am starting to wonder about next season. East and West ALWAYS wanted to seed. Lewis hung with Elliott and "not seed" mentality. WHen Morgan replaced Lewis, we began seeding in thier second year with the 62nd district.

Since Morgan is now unhappy with East, what is the possibility that they reverse their stand on seeding next season (and agree to the blind draw again)?

It took 3 votes to put seeding in that year and it will take 3 votes to take it out, so East or West one would have to vote to take it out.

Why would Morgan be unhappy with East????????????

  13. Many of you are probably not familiar with the 1977 Tomcats, but the Paul Patterson(never lost to a 16th region opponent) coached Tomcats made it to the state tournament semifinals on Saturday morning before losing to the eventual champion, ironically Louisville Ballard. How would this game play out with the disciplined Patterson offense and defense against the run happy Lions. Patterson had 2 first team All State players(as well as Ky-Indiana All Stars) in Jeff Kovach and Jim Harkins, Elliott probably has 2 to 4 All State caliber players in Ferguson, Faulkner, Faulkner and Knipp. I loved this Ashland team but have the utmost respect and admiration for what this Elliott team has and is still accomplishing. I predict a 70-70 overtime game. How's that for a cop out?

    PS-Elliott County-Bring the 16th Region a State Championship!!

I am not a Tomcat fan but I do know they lost to Louisville VALLEY in the semifinals that year, not Ballard, I was at the game.

  14. Are you privy to the East Carter email to the KHSAA? If so post it and clear up their name if that was all that was written.

No one should have to post any email to "clear" up East Carter's name...To imply that somehow the principal, athletic director, or basketball coach at East Carter would lie, so as to avoid playing another team, or to improve their chances of advancement is below petty, and I feel should call for a ban from BGP...Their should never be a copy of something to placate neanderthals like yourselves who bottom feed for any info to feed your incredible amounts of jealousy and hate...Some of YOU are the reason that sportsmanship has died....Not coaches trying to better the situations of their players. Go Raiders! Good luck Coach Baker against who ever you play, you, regardless of what is said on here are one classy individual and I am glad you represent all of us Raiders!

  15. Count me in among the bunch that was ready to vote the Lady Vikings into the top 10...my assessment, unfortunately, was from afar, as I haven't had the privilege of seeing Rowan this year, but could only review their games in the paper and in forums such as this...still...they looked pretty good to me, particularly after the wins over Manual, Boone, and Notre Dame, and with that big goose-egg in the loss column.

Looks like I was fooled as well as many others...Rowan is undoubtedly one of the better teams in the state, and probably worthy of being in the top 20, but a team with aspirations of being in the top ten doesn't lose by 37 to another top 10 team... Still, one heck of a season for RC, and they have some more games to redeem themselves in! None of these games matter come tournament time...

For LCA, a VERY IMPRESSIVE OUTING... congrats!

C'mon guys, lighten up!!! Manuel lost by 23 to Montgomery tonight, does that mean they're not a top ten team either???? If those stats are correct about the 15-22 on 3's they beat ANYBODY in the state by 25-30, not just Rowan Co., a really good team on a very hot night and you guys are pounding Rowan Co. and the 16th region into the ground??? Back off!!!
