  1. Too answer your question in basketball since their is no classification the smaller schools can be and are competitive with the larger schools. In NKY there isn't any mega-size schools like Oak Hills. I guess largest NKY school is Campbell County with about 1600. That might be substantially larger than other teams in their District but I would not say there are any large schools that constantly under-achieve.

That is great about the sizes of the NKY schools. I didn't realize that. There are several schools just north in Ohio that are close to 3000 (Oak Hills, Fairfield, Mason, the Lakota's). I think it is great that the school sizes are not that big.

  2. Does anyone think it could depend on the class of school? Could Scott Co. build a A or AA school that provides just enough relief without doing a lot of damage to the athletics at the larger school? Are county high schools in KY permitted to offer open enrollment? I know the middle schools in Scott Co. offer this.

So the size of the school should be dictated by athletics of the other school? I thought schools were about educations? And aren't "student-athletes", students first?

  3. This might be an unfair and too subjective question, but within the 9th Region are their big schools that typically underachieve and some small schools that overachieve? For instance, in Cincinnati, you have Oak Hills High School that has 3000 plus kids walking the halls, but when it comes to athletics they are never very good. Which blows me away that you can have that many kids and not be better. The excuse is that the Catholic schools steal their players, but you can't tell me with 3 middle schools, and 3000 students, you can't be more competitive. Is there anything like that in NKY? I know this is a KY website, and I didn't mean to control my post with an Ohio school, but I am just trying to get a feel. I know names of KY schools from living close in Ohio, but really don't know much about the programs and such. Thanks again in advance.

  4. Where did you move here from?

As someone said, CCH rivalry games at CCH are a must. One of the few opportunities for a sold out gym in the 9th.

If you like old , crackerbox gyms go to Holy Cross when they play a rival. Get there early. 90% of the fans on here complain about it. I'd take a game there over BOK any day. I'm an atmosphere guy.

NCC has pretty strong student support which makes games there fun.

In Boone County you'll see Cooper with some good crowds against the other Boone teams. Ryle had decent following last year. Coach McFarland will get that going again.

Dayton v Bellevue is a great old school battle. Underrated rivalry.

I lived the majority of my life in the Cincinnati area, but lived some in Columbus. There is good basketball in Cincinnati, but I am excited about being in NKY and learning new teams, rivalries, and traditions.

  5. Trinity's water boy killed Highland's water boy in a scrimmage. But don't worry, Highland's water boy will be difficult to stop for all the other teams in the state. And, Trinity's water boy didn't look very explosive after the first water break, it took him eight or nine plays to get water to the team the rest of the time.

The KHSAA won't allow Fairview to have water boys this year, they have to get their own damn water.

Chuck Smith is the Water Boy at Boyle County, he was quoted as saying, "No one waters Chuck Smith's team, except Chuck Smith".

In today's world with all this "purge" stuff, and school shootings and such, I wish you would have chosen a different way of describing your post. I am sure it was innocent, and maybe I am being over sensitive, but I think it could have been described differently. Funny post, just don't like the usage of "killed".

  6. I did some researching on the KHSAA scoreboard website (that is awesome). Do the Boone County schools get into big rivalries? What about the river schools? Are the Catholic school rivalries as intense as the Cincinnati ones (LaSalle, Elder, St. X, and Moeller)? Are there any cool trophies or items that any of the rivalries play for? Thanks. Sorry for all the questions.

  7. I'll give you a start:

Best player - James Bolden Holmes

Best Inside / Outside Duo - Drew McDonald and Zac Pangallo Newport Central Catholic

Deepest Team - Dixie Heights ( can go 10 deep with nice players )

Best Cheering Section - CovCath Crazies

Must see games - any at the BOK center

Do they play a lot of games at BOK center? Never been in there yet. Thanks for the info.

  8. They are better than they used to be. I think they owned the longest losing streak in Cincy. So they are much improved lately, but by no means a powerhouse in Cincy.

I think you might be thinking of Northwest High School that had all the losing, then in the last year or two had good seasons. Walnut Hills was 4-6 last year and 5-5 the year before that in a pretty weak ECC. Like you said, by no means a powerhouse in Cincy.

  9. In another thread it was mentioned to me that since I am new to NKY and live in the 9th Region, to get out and see as much of the basketball as possible. So what are the must see things? Players to watch? Good coaches? Best gyms/atmosphere? Best rivalry games? Traditions? I am open to any suggestions and appreciate the feedback. I love high school hoops and am not picky about size/type of school. Thanks!

  10. Here's a tidbit for you, I would go to every game I could, especially the rivalry ones. Since you are in the 9th region, you are in close proximity to a lot of schools. Check out the scoreboard on the main page of BGP and print off the schedules. I recommend Holmes and Cov Cath and Brossart and Campbell personally. Either way though I'd go check out as many as I could, see what the atmosphere is like at each one. It's worth the experience!

Thanks for the suggestions. I plan on hitting a lot of the boys varsity games at a lot of different gyms. I love the atmosphere at the high schools that have a lot of school pride. And with so many schools in close proximity, I will be able to see a lot of great basketball.

On a side note, I love how the KHSAA website has that scoreboard feature that shows schedules, stats, and standings. The Ohio HSAA doesn't have anything like that.

  11. Everyone makes the basketball playoffs. Here is something that will freak you out if you are not from KY. The 4 District winners and the 4 District Runner-ups both advance to the 9th Region Tournament. So yes.... you can lose a playoff game AND still be a Region Champ or even a State Champ. (See last year!)

Wow! That is hard to believe. But with the strong tradition of KY basketball, it must be a system that people like or they would change it. Thanks for that extra tidbit.

  12. The small schools can play in the All "A" state tournament. It's not a true state title, but the smallest 130 or so schools in the state are eligible to play. Otherwise, as far as I know there are no plans to classify basketball. Football is the only major sport that is classified (with 6 divisions). Again, the NKAC has nothing to do with the KHSAA and is not a recognized conference/organization. There is no NKAC Champion, tournament, schedule, etc. Don't spend another minute thinking about what the NKAC is, what it does, or how it fits in. In Kentucky, it's about district and region. No cool conference names. Pay attention after the season when the NKAC give out their awards, and you'll be good to go.

Gotcha! Thanks for the information. I will erase and delete "NKAC" from my memory :) I live in the 9th Region. And know from looking at the KHSAA website which schools they are. I am slowly figuring out which schools are in which Districts. Looks like geography can help or hurt you a lot in those in regards to small schools. But hey, look at Hoosiers, the little guys always have a chance. And like you said, they have the all A. Thanks again!

  13. I got on the KHSAA website and researched the D2 and D3 teams from last year and there was a pretty big divide within it. Is there

any talk of going to 4 divisions?

    Silver Grove 17-13 (D3)

    Bellevue- 16-12 (D3)

    Ludlow - 15-11 (D3)

    Highlands - 9-15 (D2)

    Dayton - 7-18 (D3)

    Holy Cross - 7-19 (D2)

    Lloyd - 6-24 (D2)

    Calvary - 5-12 (D3)

    Villa - 5-19 (D3)

    Heritage - 3-19 (D3)

Cov Latin (not listed above but I assume they are D3?) - 0-19 (D3)

I know small schools have their ups and downs, but it seems that some of these schools don't have much a chance to ever have success. I mean with the economy tough on schools and budgets, these small schools would have to travel pretty far to be able to play teams that they have a chance to compete with. I don't mean easy wins, I mean just to compete with. The KHSAA showed a lot of blowout losses. But if as someone posted no one puts any real emphasis on the NKAC then I guess it doesn't matter. I come from a DIV school in Ohio where we were in a DIII/DIV league and had a chance to be competitive. And then when state tournament came around, again we had a chance at some postseason success because it was just against DIV teams. I am not trying to sound dumb, just learning about the KY way. Again, I appreciate peoples comments and helping to educate me on it.

  14. Not sure what you are looking for, or if you are trolling for something, but there isn't much confusing about NKY basketball.

One class, team's divided into districts geographically. Top two teams in each district advance to regional tournament, regions are also based on geography with four districts in each region. Regional champions advance to the state tournament. State tournament winner is champion.

NKAC means nothing to most schools in NKY, although the D3 schools do play each other twice and place a lot of emphasis on winning the conference.

All of the NKAC D2 schools except Holmes and Highlands are also eligible for the All A tournament, which consists of the smallest 130 schools in the state. Thus the D3 schools traditionally struggle in this tournament.

If you weren't trolling, I apologize in advance.

In some states conference affiliation and championships are a big deal at the high school level. In others they are not. In Kentucky, they are not. In Ohio, I know conference races are a very big deal. A large portion of the season in Ohio is focused on conference games and winning a conference title. In Kentucky, everything is geared toward the postseason (or all A for some schools). Not sure why there's a difference. But, there is.

Not trolling for anything. Geez. Just trying to learn. It is different than what I am used to. Thanks for your input!

It now makes sense why I haven't been able to find a website with any info on the NKAC. I would think more schools would care because the state tournament is really for the haves and not for the haves not or small schools. Anyway, thanks to all for your input and answering my questions. I appreciate it.

  15. The All-A is for the smallest 130 (approximate) schools in the state so it includes some of the Division 2 schools also. The All-A goes by regions while the NKAC does not. The D3 schools do not have much success in the 9th region All-A . The NKAC schools are supposed to play each team in their division once and the winner is the one with the best record (D3 used to play each other twice and may still). But if games are snowed out or if a team is over the limit for games due to the All-A and other tourneys there has been times when the All-A game is used as an NKAC game.

Thank you frankdracman23 for the explanation. I really appreciate it. I recently moved here from up north where things aren't as confusing. You are in a conference. Then come state tournament time, there are 4 divisions based on enrollment and they play there way down to 4 state champions. According to what you typed, and I may have misinterpreted it, the NKAC divisions don't do the same things. And you would think that the all A would be for the D3 schools to have a chance to play for something, but you said in the 9th region they don't have much success. Anyway, head is spinning a little, but I will get it down. I can't wait for games to start and learning who is the big rivals and such. I know NKY has a reputation for good basketball! Thanks again!

  16. 3 divisions. Large, medium, small size schools if you will. Public and Private mixed. Some schools don't really care about winning the NKAC conference championship, some do. I would say the D3 schools put more emphasis on it in general.

Top of my head: Some may be wrong.....

D1: Ryle, Cooper, Conner, Boone Co, Campbell Co, Covcath, Dixie, Simon Kenton,

D2: Holy Cross, NewCath, LLoyd, Beechwood, Newport, Brossart, Highlands, Holmes (although they may be D1?) St. Henry

D3: Bellevue, Dayton, Ludlow, Silver Grove, Villa, Calvary, Heritage

Thank you very much! I thought the private was mixed in. You mentioned that the D3 schools put more emphasis on winning the NKAC. They also get the all A tournament right? Or is that select schools only? Thanks again in advance.

  17. So they beat Collins? Wow. Good for them!

Budman, I have to say, your lack of respect for the former coaches is getting old. Coach Turner and family gave a lot to the program. As much as you don't want to admit it, but this years transition falls some to Coach Turners credit. Just like when a coach leaves to go to another school, the following year, the new coach is playing out the previous coaches hand. After that, it is on the new coaches to see what they have. I am not saying the new coaching staff isn't doing a good job, but Coach Turner doesn't deserve the constant lack of respect that people on here throw at her. Calling last year a "social club" and as you put it, not having a plan. Total lack of respect.

Good luck to the Lady Jags this year. They should have a great season. They would have either way. Whether Coach Turner was here or the new staff.

While I find this soap opera that is Cooper funny, you are off base. The new coach has done a great job. I have heard great things about what he is doing over there. The kids are happy and that is what is most important. They are having fun again. To say that Coach Turner should get the credit for this year is such a joke. If you want to talk about "respect", you are not showing any respect to the current coaching staff and players that are working hard for respect. I think this team could be a sleeper.

  18. At the Cooper player and parent meeting yesterday we did find out that they will be fielding at freshman/sophomore team. They will play a 14 or 15 game schedule. The freshman numbers were low and to field a team they needed to use a couple of the sophomores in the program to complete the roster. They will be competing against other freshman/sophomore teams during the course of their schedule.

So Budman, you seem to be in the know, are the Lady Jags going to be better this year? Can they compete with District 33?

  19.

I don't believe adjusting to varsity full time will take Hunter, Maddie, and Taylor long to figure out. All three play year round AAU against top teams and players in the area around. All have played varsity, all have been in Stamm system for well over a year. All 3 practiced everyday last year against and withCastleberry, Peacock, and Ray.

Taylor will be extremely valuable this year backing up Pluto at the point. But she's very capable of taking that on. Very good ball handler, tough defender, and knows how to get everyone involved on offense. Should be fun to watch and see these girls in bigger roles at CHS this year.

Coach Stamm will bring out the max in these players! Chalk up the 33rd to Conner! Nobody remembers second place!
