Coach Tony Love and the Ashland Matcats came in 2nd place (as a team) in the Ohio Valley Invitational tournament at Fairland Saturday. Eight teams participated: Fairland (OH), Ashland (KY), Meigs (WV), Johnson Central (KY), Athens (OH), Gallipolis (OH), Wahama (WV) and Wellston (OH).

 

Ashland had 10 wrestlers finish well with: 2 first-place, 4 second-place, and 4 third-place finishes.

 

1st Place:

Trace Stafford (Sr.) – 135 lbs.

Angle Gurule (Sr.) – 160 lbs.

 

2nd Place:

Christian Riggsby (Fr.) – 125 lbs.

Joe Serey (Sr.) – 140 lbs.

Cody Zacur (Sr.) – 171 lbs.

Andrew Dillon (Jr.) – 275 lbs. (didn’t make 215)

 

3rd Place:

Bryant Cavin (Fr.) – 103 lbs.

Blake Runnells (Sr.) – 160 lbs. (didn’t make 152)

Evan Holbrook (Fr.) – 189 lbs.

Randy Riggs (Sr.) – 275 lbs.

Graybeard

Ashland's Angle Gurule (maroon & gray). Angle is a senior and wrestles in the 160 pound weight class. He didn't wrestle most of last season due to an injury.

Trace Stafford is a senior and wrestles 135.

Andrew Dillon is a junior and wrestled 275 because he was 6 ounces over his normal 215. He took 2nd place in 275 even though he was a little undersized for the class.

Joe Serey is a senior and took 2nd place in 140.

I think JC finished abut 4th place as a team.

I made a mistake. Joe Serey wrestles in the 145 pound class, not 140 as originally stated.

Cody Zacur (171) is new to Ashland. His family moved here from Chicago. Cody is an experienced wrestler that could make some noise this year.

Blake Runnells, a senior, wrestled 160 this weekend because he didn't make weight at 152.

Evan Holbrook, a freshman, wrestles 189.

Just curious - do you know if Matt Holbrook is related to Ian Holbrook?
