Boyd County 2 Covington Catholic 1

In a game that both the Boyd and CovCath pitchers dominated the hitters Boyd executed better and thus won this game.

Salisbury the Boyd pitcher didn't walk a batter and struck out 9 CovCath batters and the only run he gave up was unearned but Shumate didn't allow a walk either and he struck out 7 and he only allowed a single earn run.

The difference in this game was in the 5th innings where Boyd 1st batter went 5-3 for the 1st out. The number 9 batter got on with a flair just over the SS reach then after a 5-3 sac bunt to move the runner to second, Boyd got three swinging singles that didn't leave the infield that finally scored a run.

Salisbury struck out the last five CovCath batter to earn the victory in a outstanding display of pitching and while Salisbury was impressive so was Shumate. It was a good game of old fashion baseball.

CovCath now stands at 17-3.

Back to back games on Saturday and three games in less than 24 hours and this Oldguy is beat, as I am sure the rest of the CovCath team is.

Nice job by Shumate. Good to see.

Last 5 K'd? That brings back bad memories.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly plus, PeeWee's Place Star of the game, Grubers Grill Defensive Star and BAWAC Inc. Offensive Star of the game, stats and more.

First and foremost: A huge and I do mean HUGE thank you to Brain Fagel Father, Doctor Dan Fagel for being at the game today and then taking care of Matt Rolf. I am totally miffed that whomever ran the LIT this year, didn't have a medical trainer available at this field today.

The good: Adam Shumate! He deserved better than the loss today as does any pitcher who only gives up one earned run, walks no one and strikes out 7. While Shumate did give up 9 hits today 5 of those hits were of the infield hit variety not bunts mind you but full blown swings that never left the infield but had to have eyes in the balls.

The Bad and Ugly: Lack of timely hitting and leaving 7 men on base.

Grubers Grill Defensive Star of the game: Two plays by Jake Lankheit. 2nd inning; man on first and Shumate K's the batter on a 2-2 pitch, the man on first is a bit too far off of first base and Jake throws a perfect strike to Schneider for the 1-2-3 DP to end the inning. 4th inning; Boyd gets a man on with a hit and he tries to steal second base on Jake but the CovCath junior catcher takes exceptions on the runner trying to take something that belongs to him and guns him down on a outstanding 2-6 cs.

BAWAC Inc. Offensive Star of the game: On a day when CovCath only scores 1 run there really isn't much to write about but young Mr. Schreiver goes 3/3 double but gets left on base each time.

PeeWee's Place Star of the game: Got to go with Boyd County Salibury who pitched a gem while driving in the only Eagles earned run of the day on a seeing eye single and a double. Outstanding day young man.

Sounds like the Colonels had a great weekend of games. Also, congrats to young Mr Ward, who I believe recorded his first varsity hit. That correct Oldguy? Also, do you have Schreiver's numbers? Seems like he is really hitting the ball well since he first started playing.

Yes Wardo got that monkey off his back, in no less than his first PA and yes young Mr. Shreiver is knocking the stuffing out of the ball and in fact (dare I say it) he is the best hitting freshmen that I have seen since (again dare I say it) nope, I won't say it but his numbers are indeed impressive even if he were a senior! As I tell young Shreiver each and every day, "you belong up here young man, you belong" meaning up here with the varsity! Good kid!
