Game played at Champion Window Field. Campbell home team. Ryle comes from behind to win with 3 runs in the 6th and 1 in the 7th.

 

Campbell strung together in a row 5 hits and a walk in the second inning to get their 4 runs. Other than that, Ryle starter Matt Gorbandt completely shut down the Camels. Gorbandt went the distance giving up a total of 4 runs, 6 hits, 2 BB, 1 HBP, and 7 K's.

 

Ryle took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning with a leadoff double by Tyler O'Bryan, a sac bunt from Evan Winchester, and a sac fly from Bryan Comora.

 

In the 6th, O'Bryan singled, Winchester walked, and Comora was HBP. With 2 out, Jake Steinle walked to plate a run. Daniel Etscheid then hit a grounder up the middle that was fielded behind the bag but the toss to the 2nd was not in time (or bobbled, not sure) - anyway, Winchester scored from 3rd and Comora came around from 2nd to tie it up.

 

In the bottom of the 6th, Michael Kremer lead off with a single and then Sheppard was HBP. The game was tied at this point - 1st and 2nd base with no out - but Campbell did not elect to sac bunt. Instead, Michael Teegarden struck out for the first out. Jenkins then hit a grounder up the middle that Etscheid stretched to catch and then short tossed it directly from the glove to Leiff Clarkson for the force at second and on to first for the DP.

 

Tyler Walsh pitched 6 innings for Campbell. #27 (Huesman?) pitched the 7th for Campbell.

 

Caleb Lonkard led off the 7th with a walk, got to 2nd on a PB, to 3rd on O'Bryan's single (3rd hit of game), and scored on Winchester's sac fly. On the night, Winchester had a 1B, BB, Sac, and SF - plus a runner caught stealing.

Would love to hear an explanation of why Campbell did not bunt these runners into scoring position, as well as take themselves out of a DP situation. That was an absolute no-brainer. You do it 100 out of a 100 times. You do it if Albert Pujols is up at the plate. You do it in the first game of the season and game 7 of the World Series. If it had, in fact, been done, Ryle's middle infielders aren't at DP depth and the ground ball up the middle is a 2-run single rather than an inning-ending DP. Good for Ryle, not so good for Campbell.

 

Take away the 2nd inning and Gorbandt was dominating. His curveball was nasty and overwhelmed one Camel hitter after the next. I think Rebholtz missed a couple of those breaking balls by 2 feet. Campbell's starter also threw a very nice game. A little wildness and an error in the 6th inning hurt him, but otherwise he looked very good. Great hitting night for Tyler O'Bryan, who has to be well over .400 for the season at this point. His mom must have been a good softball hitter. He ain't getting these skills from his father's genes.

I have to agree Gorbandt's curve ball was for the most part untouchable tonight. Lefty on lefty, he was hard on Rebholz tonight. Nice game by both teams. Camels have Bourbon County in the morning, and Brossart tomorrow night

Hard to make the assumption that the double play ball would have then been a single. Pitch way different with runners on 2nd and 3rd than with runners on 1st and 2nd, so to say that that same ball would have been hit in that same place is pure speculation.

 

As for not bunting, Teegarden has been squaring the ball up like crazy lately and I'm sure the Campbell County coach went with his gut and decided to let him hit away in that situation to drive in a run. It simply didn't work out tonight and that's the risk you run when you roll the dice. For the record, Pujols would NEVER bunt in that situation, EVER.

In a high school setting, you bunt in that situation six days a week and twice on Sunday. For the very reason that occurred in the game.
