David Buchanan QB Camp 6/16/10

Featured Replies

Curious as to any QBs that looked good at yesterday's camp. I know Coach Buchanan does a good job, and he has a serious prospect at Mason Co. this year. Anyone?

There were 14 kids there total. We had 10 qb's from out of town. Our QB, Neal Pawsat, worked with four of our young qb's. It was humid in the morning, and got hotter as the day went on, but I was pleased with their concentration and how they worked. Prestonsburg (4), Harlan, North Laurel(2), Lloyd Memorial and Allen Central(2) were the schools represented. Without singling one out, etc. it did stand out to me how much better qb mechanics and fundamentals are today than when I started doing this back in 2002. KY HS kids are much better fundamentally. It was also interesting that they were much more comfortable in shotgun type of work than in taking their pass drop from under center- although most of them were pretty good at their 3 step drop.

The foundation of the camp is the stuff I learned back in the summers of 1980, 1981, and 1982 at Phil Simms Camp @ Morehead State University. Those drills and fundamentals really helped me, and have been great for our qb's at Mercer County, Paris, and now Mason County. My sophomore year at camp, my partner for throwing drills was this freshman from Morgan County who turned out to be pretty good- Bill Allen who signed with UK! I had never heard of places like Lewis County or West Carter, but met Ernie Robinson and Bert Bradshaw. Now those teams are on our schedule every year. Yeah, I thought it was funny back then that "Bert and Ernie" were hanging out together at QB Camp.

Every now and then I still get to see Charlie Kissick and Juan Armitage from Bath County- they were there in 1981 with their qb, John Lyons. Teel Bruner(Laurel County), Chris Winkler(Estill County), Richie Grigsby(Corbin), Casey Catron (Corbin) and I think Tommy Greer(Corbin) made it to that camp also.

Those were great days and fun days. I hope the kids going to camp this June are having the same type of experience that we had. Those 30 years have gone by fast. The next 30 will put me at 75!:sssh:
