Do high school coaches require basketball players to play AAU to make the high school team? If so, what grade do the girls have to decide to play on an AAU team and give up other sports?

Not in most small schools they do not. You would probably not be able to field a Volleyball and Softball team if you did. Also many kids do not have parents who can afford AAU or that can drive their child several times a week an hour away to practice.

I don't know of any high school coaches that require that from their players. They probably recommend it though...

I don't think they are allowed to require it under KHSAA rules. I understand that the "spirit" of the rules is that no HS coach is allowed to "coerce" a student to play a sport year round - that is why a high school coach may not coach one of their high school players on a non school team and why the HS coach can only conduct practices at certain times during the off season.
