Saint Patrick wins their opener against Mason Co. 3-2. SPS JV also victorious with a 9-5 win (correct me if I am wrong on that score).

 

St. Patrick has a very small team with several new players with very little or no fast pitch experience (3 of the 13 that I know for sure). Kudos to coach Crawford and girls on the win.

Mason Co softball is very young.

Yes and, taking nothing away from the win, but Mason had several out of town with a school function.

 

This should remain a great rivalry between these two teams, as they are both very young. They turn right around and play each other again on April 7.

Also, their JV is extremely young, and they even play a 5th grader at times. Look for Mason County to be very strong in the next few years.

 

St. Pat holds Mason scoreless after Mason scored 2 quick runs in the first inning, posting a 2-1 score. Then, St. Pat rallies in the 4th to score 2 of their own, making it 3-2. Neither team scored after the 4th inning.

Why is it very young. Mason County is a school system with probably 400 girls in the high school. How come there is so little interest in sports that the girls programs have to bring up middle school students to have a team. Are the younger players that talented? Do the coaches try to encourage high school girls to play before going down to younger grades to get players?

It's not like in basketball where there are actually enough high school girls to make a high school team and they CHOOSE to go after younger players, there just isn't the interest in softball at Mason County like there has been in the past. There are only 2 juniors, 2 sophomores (maybe more), a few freshman, and the rest are middle schoolers. There just aren't the numbers in high school for softball, so they have to dig down into the middle school for players.

 

A few years back, when McKay coached, there were plenty of high school girls to fill a team, and only 8th graders were brought up as kind of a learning experience and to prepare them for the next year, but that's not the case now. Heck, they even have a 5th and 6th grader on the team, who happens to be an excellent catcher.

 

My point is, is that there seems to be more interest in the program at the middle school level for some reason. Hopefully this will change. In a few years, their team, or starters for that matter, should all be in high school, as these younger girls will be older.

And yes, some of these younger players are very talented. Mason County could be an excellent team in the future.
