Is R2 Out or safe?

 

Situation:

R1 on third R2 on 2nd base

Ball hit to 2nd baseman who throws home.

 

R2 runs to third and touches the bag and takes one step toward home when he realizes the R1 is coming back to third base. R2 then without retouching third base takes about 4 steps toward 2nd base. In the meantime the catcher throws the ball over the 3rd basemans head trying to get R1 out. R1 turns and scores.

 

R2 after taking 4 steps toward 2nd base sees the ball go over the third basemans head turns and runs directly to home plate.

Out....it's the same as R2 cutting across the infield, just not as drastic. However it is a play that the umpire had to see, can't call it if he doesn't see it.
