It was a “bittersweet” milestone for Paintsville coach Bill Mike Runyon.

 

The legendary coach called it a career last month after leading the Tigers to the 15th Region title once again. Runyon retired as the region’s all-time winningest coach and has more tournament titles than anyone else.

 

The bittersweet part was that Runyon’s win breaks the record of Martin’s legendary Denzil “Hoss” Halbert. Ironically, Runyon made that 529 mark to pass Halbert during the 15th Region tournament game against Shelby Valley this year with a team which included player Jeremy Pack, Halbert’s great-grandson.

One of the greatest Ky high school coaches of all time. When people ask who are some of the best coaches ever I think of Bobby Keith (Clay County) and Bill Mike Runyon (Paintsville). Have a great retirement coach.

Congrats to Bill Mike. He's a great man and a fine coach.
