buttels Posted February 6, 2008 Posted February 6, 2008 Photos and video available at this post address: http://nokysportsreport.blogspot.com/2008/02/game-spotlight-boys-covington-catholic.html It's been quite a while since I have been at a game in Park Hills, but tonight we are at Covington Catholic High School as the Colonels take on the Scott Eagles. Scott comes in at 7-14, while the Colonels have the reverse record of 14-7. I have heard how rowdy the student section is here at CovCath, we'll have to see. Cov Cath starts out in a man but Scott comes out with an early lead 10-6 lead with half of the first quarter. Tonight is Chris Bondick's second game back from a broken wrist. Cov. Cath took the lead on a basket by Michael Grimes with 1:10 to go in the first. Cov. Cath held on to the lead for the balance of the first quarter as it ended leading Scott 15-14. Cov. Cath started out the second quarter on a 5 point run that lasted the first 2:25 of the quarter. As the Cov. Cath lead built in the second quarter, the Eagles could only score on free throws throughout the quarter. The lead went to 13 at the end of the first half. Cov. Cath led 32-19. No ClassX Free Throw Challenge as it was Senior Night for the Colonels Swim Team. We did get a few minutes with Coach Barker at halftime to talk about the Region Champs and their trip to Louisville this weekend. Third quarter started out a bit slow for the Colonels as Scott came out on a 8-2 run. Cov. Cath came back with about 3 minutes closing the gap on a bucket by Chris Bondick & a three pointer by J. D. Schmerge to push the lead back to 12 points. A second Schmerge three pointer put the Colonels up 16 with less than a minute to go. A bucket by Jordan Counts at the buzzer added two more to the Cov. Cath lead as the Colonels had a 18 point lead going into the final eight minutes. The Schmerge 3 point parade continued in the 4th quarter as he hit his 4th trey in the first minute of the quarter. That pushed the lead to 21 points. Scott cut the lead to 12 with a little more than 2 minutes to go in the game and 11 with under a minute to go. But a late Covington Catholic rally pushed the lead and the win to a 15 point difference as the Colonels take the game 65-50. Scoring by Quarter: Scott - 14 5 11 20 - 50 Cov. Cath - 15 17 16 17 - 65 Individual Scoring - Scott E.J Murray - 20 Nikola Gligorevec- 12 Nick Hiller - 7 Aaron Brown - 7 Daniel O'Connor - 2 Andrew Wilson - 1 Ryan Bianchi - 1 Individual Scoring - Covington Catholic J.D.
