FPI stands for Football Power Index. It’s ESPN’s computer rating of how strong each team is, and it’s built to predict future performance rather than reward what a team has already done.

What the number means. A team’s FPI is the number of points it would be expected to win or lose by against an average FBS team on a neutral field. Ohio State at 28.2 means ESPN’s model expects it to beat an average team by about 28. To compare two teams, subtract their ratings. Ohio State (28.2) versus Miami (27.5) is roughly a 0.7-point edge for the Buckeyes on a neutral field, and home field adds a few points for the host.

How it’s built. ESPN says it’s based on how efficiently each team plays offense, defense and special teams, adjusted for the strength of the opponents faced. Early in the season it leans on preseason expectations (past performance, returning talent), and those fade as real games pile up. Ratings update daily.

How it differs from the polls. The AP poll and the CFP committee weigh wins, losses and résumé. FPI asks only “how good is this team right now, and how will it do going forward?” That’s why you see gaps like:

  • Alabama is No. 5 at 6-2.

  • Kentucky is only No. 24 at 7-1.

  • Undefeated teams can rank well below one-loss teams.

A close win over a weak team can hurt a rating, and a loss to a top team can barely dent it.

The projection columns. ESPN takes the ratings and simulates the rest of the season 20,000 times to produce these:

  • PROJ W-L: the average final record across the simulations.

  • WIN OUT%: the chance of winning every remaining game.

  • 6WINS%: the chance of reaching six wins and bowl eligibility.

  • WIN DIV% / WIN CONF%: the chance of winning the division or conference.

  • PLAYOFF%: the chance of making the College Football Playoff.

  • MAKE NC% / WIN NC%: the chance of reaching or winning the national championship game.

  • TREND: how many spots the team moved since last week.

One caution: FPI is a model, not a verdict. It can’t see injuries or lineup changes that haven’t shown up in results yet, and the playoff percentages are only as good as the ratings behind them. It’s best used as a second opinion next to the polls.
