Josh Leslie is head boys coach at Shelby County

Featured Replies

After a somewhat surprising and seemingly irreverent dismissal from Oldham County in April of 2024 (not many teams can a coach after a 22-9 season), John Leslie has re-surfaced a year later as head coach at Shelby County following the departure of head coach Blake Traylor after his 4 year tenure of the Rockets boys' program. Traylor is one of a recent busload of athletic coaches to depart Shelby County in what gives every outward appearance of being major problems in-house for the Rockets athletic program.

After graduating from Wittenberg College in 1994 as the the all-time leading scorer of in their basketball program, Leslie's coaching career began at Central Catholic High School in Springfield, OH where was hired as their boys basketball coach in late 1996. He took the defending D-IV runner-up Irish back to the state semifinals in his first season as head coach. After his second season he stepped down to return to teach at his alma mater, Greenview High School (OH). A year later he accepted the boys head coaching job at St. Marys Memorial High School, a team that had gone 1-20 the previous year. Leslie led the team to a 14-7 record in 2003/04, its first winning season in a decade. He was named OH-DII co-coach of the year at the end of the season, and won the honor a second time at the end of the 2004/05 season. In June 2005 he was hired as head boys coach at D-III Ottawa-Glandorf in Ottawa, OH, and he led the team to a Ohio Division III state title in his 3rd season as the Titans' head coach. He stepped down at Ottawa-Glandorf in June 2011 and relocated to Louisville before resurfacing as the head girls coach at Eastern a year later.
