Water is it Important?

Featured Replies

Water is absolutely essential for the human body, playing a crucial role in almost every function and maintaining overall health. Without water, humans can only survive for a few days.

Here's a breakdown of why water is so vital:

Key Functions of Water in the Body:

Building Material: Water is a vital nutrient and a building material for every cell.
Temperature Regulation: Water regulates body temperature through sweating and respiration.
Transport and Digestion: It helps transport nutrients and oxygen to cells and carries carbohydrates and proteins in the bloodstream.
Waste Removal: Water assists in flushing out waste products mainly through urination.
Lubrication and Protection: It acts as a lubricant for joints and tissues, moistening the eyes, nose, and mouth. It also cushions organs and tissues, including the brain, spinal cord, and fetus.
Kidney Function: Water helps kidneys filter waste from the blood and remove toxins, lessening the burden on both kidneys and liver.
Skin Health: Water keeps the skin moisturized and contributes to its elasticity and resilience.
Energy and Weight Management: Staying hydrated boosts energy levels and can help with weight management by promoting a feeling of fullness.

Water Content in the Body:
The percentage of water in the human body varies by age and gender:
Infants: Around 78% water at birth, decreasing to about 65% by age one.
Adult Men: Roughly 60% water.
Adult Women: Approximately 55% water.
Specific Organs: Some organs like the brain, heart, and lungs have very high water content.

Maintaining Hydration:
To maintain healthy body function, it's crucial to consume sufficient fluids daily to replace the water lost through breathing, perspiration, and bodily waste elimination. While the often-cited "8 glasses a day" rule is a reasonable guideline, individual needs vary based on activity level, climate, health conditions, and age.

Consequences of Dehydration:
Dehydration, or the absence of enough water in the body, can lead to serious health complications, ranging from mild symptoms like thirst, headache, and fatigue to severe conditions like heat injury, seizures, and kidney problems. Severe dehydration can even be life-threatening.
In summary, water is fundamental to human life and plays a central role in maintaining overall health and well-being. Proper hydration supports countless bodily functions and is essential for survival.

I can attest to how important water is to the human body. I have stage 3 chronic kidney disease. My nephrologist said it is very important for me to drink around 64 oz of water a day. Since I started doing that, there has been a big improvement in my kidney function. Also, I have cut out almost completely eating white bread. Pop is second. I have essentially stopped drinking it. I now drink Sprite Zero when I do feel a need to drink a soda. I also cut out using sugar and salt. All of this has improved my health greatly. The pain in my legs and joints has also improved. My nephrologist also said that people don't realize how important water is to weight loss. My weight has dropped from my heaviest of 315 lbs. to my last weighing of 278 lbs. This is in about a year.

So water is not just important during times of heat. It is important year-round.
