14th Region: Week 11

Featured Replies

We're approaching the last week of the season and what a season it has been. We've seen up and down teams. Some teams didn't get to play this past weekend due to the weather wreaking havoc across the state.

On another note, the district tournament seedings for all districts have been set.

1. Hazard (23-2): 77-35 W Lee County.

Previous Rank: 1.

This Week: Tuesday at Breathitt County, Wednesday vs. Powell County, Friday vs. Estill County.

The Bulldogs cruised to victory in they're only game of the week last week, cruising past the Lee County Bobcats without any trouble at all, 77-35. The rest of Hazard's schedule for this week was cancelled due to weather. The win extends the Bulldogs win streak to 4 straight.

Hazard will look to finish out the season by adding 3 more wins but two of they're games won't be easy. Hazard has defeated Breathitt County three times this season but none of them were at the Fairce O'Woods Coliseum which is the home of the Breathitt County Bobcats, which is the same of Tuesday's game.

Hazard will then welcome the Powell County Pirates into town on Wednesday, Powell County, who is coming off a heart-breaking loss to Breathitt County, is no team to be taken lightly.

Hazard will close out the regular season at home against the struggling Estill County Engineers.

2. Breathitt County (19-7): 60-54 W Perry County Central, 79-76 W Powell County.

Previous Rank: 2.

This Week: Tuesday vs. Hazard.

Breathitt County snapped they're two game losing streak last week by picking up wins over Perry County Central 60-54 and Powell County in thrilling fashion as senior Austin Sperry hits a 3 at the buzzer to give the Bobcats the 79-76 win over the Pirates.

Senior Austin Sperry, committed to Stetson University last week!

Breathitt County will look to add to they're two game win streak this week but it won't be easy as it will be against the Hazard Bulldogs, a team that has already defeated the Breathitt Bobcats three times this season.

3. Perry County Central (15-10): 60-54 L Breathitt County, 68-42 W Floyd Central.

Previous Rank: 3.

This Week: Tuesday at Powell County, Wednesday vs. LIGON Cogo Home School.

The Commodores will look to finish the season strong and head into the post season with the right momentum but the last week of the season won't be an easy task as they will travel to Stanton to try to sink the Pirate Ship then return home to host LIGON Cogo Home School. Trayten Woods has been on fire for the Commodores all season long. The senior is averaging 19 points a game.

4. Powell County (14-10): 94-59 W Lee County, 79-76 L Breathitt County.

Previous Rank: 4.

This Week: Tuesday vs. Perry County Central, Wednesday at Hazard, Friday vs. Menifee County.

The Pirates are one of the better overlooked teams in the 14th region this season. Bryson Edwards has carried the Pirates on his shoulders all season long. The Junior averaging 21 points a game. Can he lead his team to three more wins this week? Two of the three games are gonna be rough, especially with them being on back to back nights.

5. Knott County Central (18-9): 77-20 W June Buchanan.

Previous Rank: 5.

This Week: Monday vs. Shelby Valley, Thursday vs. Clay County.

The Patriots have been on a roll. They've won 9 of they're last 10 games. They started the season 1-4 and have since gone, 17-5.

6. Jenkins (21-4): 57-45 W Letcher County Central.

Previous Rank: 6.

This Week: Tuesday at June Buchanan, Wednesday at East Ridge, Friday at ACTS VA.

The Cavaliers continues this historic run they are on. They've won 20 games in a single season for the first time in forever, if ever and will more than likely make the regional tournament for the first time in a very long time. Now, do they have what it takes to win that district title?

7. Wolfe County (10-14): 60-56 W Estill County, 66-62 L Paris.

Previous Rank: 9.

This Week: Tuesday vs. Frankfort, Friday vs. Lee County.

Wolfe County has been struggling as of late, dropping 5 of they're last 7 games. Despite the losses, the Wolves have actually been decent, playing #4 Powell County to within 4. Powell County only lost to Breathitt, at Breathitt by 3, but that always don't matter, especially with post season right around the corner.

8. Letcher County Central (12-13): 54-51 W Leslie County, 57-45 L Jenkins.

Previous Rank: 10.

This Week: Tuesday vs. Jackson City, Thursday at Prestonsburg.

The Cougars have now dropped 5 of they're last 7 games. That's not good, especially with post season right around the corner and likely facing Jenkins, a team that has already defeated them twice this season.

9. Leslie County (12-14): 54-51 L Letcher County Central, 68-48 L Knox Central.

Previous Rank: 7.

This Week: Monday at Lee County, Thursday vs. Cordia, Friday at June Buchanan.

Leslie County has hit a rough spot down the stretch, dropping two straight and 5 of they're last 7 games. They're is a really strong chance that the Eagles can end the regular season on a three game win streak, only time will tell.

10. Estill County (12-14): 60-56 L Wolfe County, 77-32 W Owsley County.

Previous Rank: 8.

This Week: Tuesday vs. Model, Friday at Hazard.

The Engineers are struggling bad. They've dropped 5 of they're last 8 games, including a 60-57 loss to district foe, Lee County, a team that Estill had won 6 straight against and not to mention? That was Lee County's first win at Estill since 2010. The Engineers have a rough finish to end the regular season on, Model and Hazard both are very good teams.

11. Buckhorn (8-18): 66-36 L Barbourville, 76-46 W Cordia.

Previous Rank: 11.

This Week: Monday at Jackson City, Wednesday vs. Shelby Valley, Thursday at Jackson County.

Buckhorn's win against Cordia, snapped a 8 game losing streak.

12. Owsley County (9-17): 60-36 L Model, 77-32 L Estill County.

Previous Rank: 12.

This Week: Monday vs. Williamsburg, Thursday at OBI.

With the two losses this week, the Owls' three game win streak was snapped. One of those two losses was to district foe, Estill County, the same team they will meet in the first round of the 56th District tournament.

13. Lee County (9-18): 77-35 L Hazard, 94-59 L Powell County.

Previous Rank: 13.

This Week: Monday vs. Leslie County, Tuesday vs. LIGON Cogo Home School, Friday at Wolfe County.

With the two losses this week, the Bobcats three game win streak was snapped. One of those two losses was to district foe Powell County, a team they will meet in the first round of the 56th District tournament.

14. Jackson City (5-19): 63-58 L Elliott County, 71-68 L Lynn Camp.

Previous Rank: 14.

This Week: Monday vs. Buckhorn, Tuesday at Letcher County Central, Thursday at Red Bird.

The Tigers have dropped two straight and 6 of they're last 8 games. This week won't be any easier.

15. Cordia (4-21): 76-46 L Buckhorn, Forfiet to Williamsburg.

Previous Rank: 15.

This Week: Monday vs. June Buchanan, Thursday at Leslie County.

Cordia's losing skid has now reached 7 straight games.

16. June Buchanan (1-19): 77-20 L Knott County Central.

Previous Rank: 16.

This Week: Monday at Cordia, Tuesday vs. Jenkins, Thursday vs. Leslie County.

The Crusaders are having a really bad season but a team with only 8 players,  the Crusaders have some what played a challenging schedule.

DISTRICT TOURNAMETS:

- 53rd District at Letcher County Central.

Monday Feb. 24th - Saturday March 1st.

Play In-Game:  (4) Cordia vs. (5) June Buchanan -- Cordia has defeated JBS once twice this season, 58-30 (Buckhorn Christmas Tournament, doesn't count towards district seedings), 68-33 Jan. 31st.

Cordia and JBS are playing on Monday, Feb. 17th but it doesn't matter who wins that game because these two are meeting in the play in game to open up the 53rd District.

(1) Knott County Central vs. (4) Cordia/JBS.

(2) Jenkins vs. (3) Letcher County Central.

Knott County Central is 8-0 against these district opponents and will likely face Jenkins in the championship game.

Jenkins has defeated every team twice except for Knott County Central.

Letcher County Central has yet to defeat Jenkins or Knott County Central this season.

Cordia has cruised past June Buchanan fairly easy this season and this shouldn't be different.

- 54th District at Perry County Central John C. Combs Arena.

Monday Feb. 24th - Saturday March 1st.

(1) Hazard vs. (4) Buckhorn.

(2) Perry County Central vs. (3) Leslie County.

Hazard is head and shoulders above everyone else in this district. Only team to keep them close was Perry County Central in a 64-61 contest back earlier in the season but the second game was all Bulldogs.

Perry County Central has defeated both Leslie County and Buckhorn this season in both games against both teams fairly easy.

Buckhorn has yet to get a district win this season.

- 55th District at Wolfe County's Wolf Den.

Monday Feb. 24th & Thursday Feb. 27th.

(1) Breathitt County vs. TBD. -- Bobcats automatically advance to the 55th district championship game and 14th regional tournament.

(2) Wolfe County vs. (3) Jackson City.

The Bobcats ran through this district, defeating both Wolfe County and Jackson City in both games against both teams by 20+ points. Breathitt County plays this same way in the district tournament, they'll win it by 20+ too.

Wolfe County defeated the Tigers twice this season, by 17 and by 30.

- 56th District at Estill County.

Monday Feb. 24th - Saturday March 1st.

(1) Powell County vs. (4) Lee County.

(2) Estill County vs. (3) Owsley County.

Powell County won the regular season district crown and will be the 1 seed heading into the district tournament. They're loss to Estill County back on Jan. 3rd was part of the KY 2A State Tournament which didn't count towards district standings.

Estill County comes in 3-3 with two losses to Powell County and a loss to Lee County.

Owsley County only has wins over Lee County. Played Estill to within 9 back on Jan. 28th but then got blown out by the Engineers back on Feb. 15th by 45.

Lee County has two district wins, 70-67 over Owsley County and 60-57 over Estill County, on the same court where the district tournament is being held at.
