Winter to return early next week

Featured Replies

Winter looks to return to Kentucky next week. A Canadian high-pressure system located around North Dakota will funnel arctic air towards Kentucky on Monday as it moves eastward. A short wave trough will form, and this will provide the lift needed for precipitation to form. These conditions, plus a low-pressure system located over Mexico, will funnel gulf moisture towards the Ohio Valley. Wintry precipitation will enter western Kentucky late Monday. The precipitation will move eastward across Kentucky. Most of it will fall as snow, but on the southern edge of the precipitation field, some could see some freezing rain and ice accumulations. Where this will occur depends on where the 540 line sets up. This line shows where the rain will turn into snow. Look at the map below. The black arrow shows the transition zone.

The following map is from around 11 pm EST Monday to 2 am EST Wednesday. Accumulation totals are still fluctuating too much to predict any accumulations, but at this moment a 1-6" will be possible. These totals will change as we get closer. Near the transition zone, around a quarter inch of freezing rain accumulation will be possible

Update information I received from the NWS-Louisville.

Good morning partners,

There is increasing potential for winter weather Monday night into Tuesday across portions of the area. While the exact amounts and precipitation types are still uncertain, there is increasing confidence that portions of central Kentucky and southern Indiana will receive accumulating snow.

In addition, multiple chances for precipitation over the next week will increase the likelihood for flooding across the area.

Please see the attached slides for more information on the upcoming winter weather and flooding potential. More updates will come over the next few days as the forecast evolves.

As always, feel free to reach out to us anytime if you have questions.

Regards,
-NWS Louisville
