Ashland 74 Russell 39

Complete and total annihilation by the Kittens. Kenleigh Woods looked like her old self, scoring a game high 27. If there was any question who the top team in the 16th is, it was emphatically answered tonight. The rest of the region has work to do between now and Morehead.

High Scorers*

? | Woods 27, Duckwyler 13, Karle 13, Gulley 11

? | Darnell 13

Thank you for the kind words DMC! It was an interesting game. Ashland would jolt out to a 29-14 lead while Russell would go on a 10-2 run - but then Ashland would respond with a 7-0 run to end the first half and a 16-0 run to start the third quarter.

This was a game where Ashland had everything in sync, while Russell on the other hand had an off night. They had a couple of wide open lay ups missed and in the first half only had something like five turnovers, which is really good especially against this Kitten defense that puts a lot of pressure on opponents.

Woods hit five three pointers - I cannot see any drop off in her game. What an incredible comeback.

Troxler for Ashland has so much length and at times caused heavy pressure, forcing a turnover. She may have had one steal, but the amount of pressure and disruption she caused defensively will never show up on a stat sheet. She did a great job.

Russell had some bright spots. This is a very, very young team and out of all of the nice coaching jobs Mandy Layne has done, this is right up there with her best. They'll learn a lot from this game, away from the ball in particular. Running up to help teammates that are pressured, boxing out, they'll see the film and grow in some spots.

Stacy Davis has done an incredible job as well, especially dealing with the injury situation the way she has.

Ashland has a tough rematch with Portsmouth coming up and Russell defends their 63rd district winning streak against Raceland Friday night. I'm sure both teams will grow from this contest.
