11th Region: Week 6

Featured Replies

The weather played havoc with the schedule this past week.  Outside of some action in the 11th Region All A and 2A Sectionals most games were wiped out by the snow.  Great Crossing was able to get their matchup with Indiana power Cathedral as well.  All of the higher ranked teams won their games, and the Lexington Public Schools were all idle, so there was no movement in the rankings this week. Also, the news broke that Aveion Chenault will be joining an already potent lineup at Frederick Douglass for the rest of the season.  A very deep team just got deeper...but how will it affect the chemistry?  That remains to be seen, but let's go back and look at the week that was.

Team    (Record)

1. Great Crossing (13-4)

The Warhawks managed to get in 2 big games between the weather, and were impressive in both against very good competition in going 2-0.  Their first game of the week was a big 11th Region matchup with Madison Central at home.  The Indians were able to push Great Crossing to the end, but the Warhawks ultimately came out of top 78-74.  Great Crossing placed 4 players in double figures in the game, led by Vince Dawson with 20 points.  Malachi Moreno struggled from the field, going 5-16.  He made up for that at the line, however, sinking 8-10 to finish with 18 points to go along with 17 rebounds.  The week ended with a huge 89-88 win over Cathedral at Thomas Moore.  Moreno and Dawson again led the way for the Warhawks, who again placed 4 players in double figures.  Moreno had another huge game with 26 points and 22 rebounds.  Dawson added 22 points, while LJ Holman scored 17, and Gage Richardson added 15.  Great Crossing has 3 games this week.  They play on the road at Western Hills and Frankfort, before returning home to take on a tough Lloyd Memorial team on Saturday.

2. Frederick Douglass (10-2)

Weather wiped out all of the Broncos games last week.  The biggest news was the Aveion Chenault will be joining the team.  Chenault was the 2nd leading scorer for Freddy D last season with 12.5 points per game.  He was also tied for the rebounding lead with 6.4 per game.  He joins a deep roster that already has 8 players averaging between 4.9 and 15.5 points per game.  No word yet on when he might see action, but the Broncos will be back in action on Wednesday in a rematch with Bryan Station, at home.  They then conclude their week with another home game on Friday against Scott County.

3. Bryan Station (13-2)

The Defenders were also idle last week due to the weather.  They have a pair of big 11th Region matchups this week, both on the road.  On Wednesday they get a rematch with Frederick Douglass before playing Henry Clay on Friday.

4. Henry Clay (10-2)

Weather also shut down the Blue Devils last week.  Henry Clay had 3 games on the schedule for this week.  Weather, however, has already cancelled their matchup tonight against Woodford County.  If Mother Nature will cooperate, Henry Clay will get back in action on Tuesday, with a trip to Scott County to take on the Cardinals.  They will finish out the week on Friday with a big home matchup with Bryan Station on Friday.

5. Madison Central (10-4)

The Indians did manage to get in one games last week, against the region's number one team, Great Crossing.  Although Central was not able to come away with a win, they did impress in the 78-74 loss.  Jake Feldhaus led the way for the Indians with 29 points.  He was, however, held way below his average on the boards as he finished with 5.  In fact, the game was really won on the boards.  The Warhawks outrebounded the Indians 44-20.  The Indians will try to break their 2 game losing streak this week on Tuesday when they travel to Nicholasville to take on West Jessamine.  They will also take part in the Bill Smallwood Classic at Berea on Saturday.  There they will face Whitley County at 630pm.

6. Sayre (10-4)

Although the weather did push the games back a couple of days, they did manage to play the All A Regional on Saturday and Sunday.  The Spartans were able to take home the trophy and advance to the All A State Tournament with wins over Frankfort (71-44) in the semifinals, and Lexington Christian Academy (55-41) in the finals.  Sayre returns to action on Tuesday when they host Taylor County

7. Frankfort (12-3)

Both of the Panthers games last week were in the All A 11th Region tournament.  They were able to get by Berea in the quarterfinals in a 61-59 thriller, before ultimately getting throttled by Sayre in the semifinals 71-44.  The Panthers have 3 games on the schedule this week, all at home.  They open action on Monday night against Valley.  The finish up the week with a pair of 11th Region matchups.  On Friday, they face Great Crossing, before taking on crosstown rival Wstern Hills on Saturday.

8. Tates Creek (7-6)

Like the rest of the Lexington Public Schools the Commodores were forced to be idle last week due to the weather.  They enter the week on a 2 game losing streak.  The Commodores go on the road to try and break that streak against Lexington Catholic on Tuesday.  They then return home to play Dixie Heights on Thursday.

9. Lexington Catholic (7-8)

The Knights were able to get in their games in the 2A Section 5 Final Four last week.  On Thursday they were able to get by Bourbon County 72-60 behind 22 points from Ryan Harward.  Max Meagher added 18 points and 8 rebounds for the Knights.  The weather pushed the finals back until Sunday.  There they encountered a tough Mercer County squad.  Ultimately the Titan proved to be too much, and advanced past the Knights 51-40.  Catholic only shows one game on the schedule this week, on the road at Tates Creek on Monday.

10. Franklin County (6-7)

The Flyers were another team that was idled last week due to the weather.  They'll take their 6-7 worksheet on the road on Monday against Shelby County.  Currently that is the only game on the docket for the Flyers this week.

11. Lexington Christian Academy (7-8)

The Eagles action last week was all in the 11th Region All A Tournament.  In the quarterfinals at Frankfort Christian Academy they faced the host Royals, and had no trouble in a 108-37 victory.  All 11 players that saw action scored for LCA lead by Saxton Howard with 30.  In the semifinals the Eagles cruised past Model 71-54.  The finals saw them face a surging Sayre team on Sunday.  The Spartans were too much for the Eagles in the finals as they took home the 11th Region All A Championship, 55-41.  LCA has a pair of games this week.  On Thursday they travel to Lincoln County to take on the Patriots before returning home to face Johnson Central on Saturday.

12. Madison Southern (6-8)

The Eagles lost their only game of the week, 73-66 at home to a good Clay County team.  Casen Nobbe poured in 18 points in the loss, while freshman Tucker Nobbe added 15.  After winning 3 in a row, Southern has now lost 3 in a row.  They will try to break that streak with 3 games this week.  On Tuesday they host Bell County before making the short trip across town to play Model on Friday.  On Saturday they will take place in the Bill Smallwood Classic at Berea where they will play Beechwood.

13. Western Hills (4-7)

The Wolverines had all of their games wiped out last week by the snow.  They get back in action this week on Tuesday at home with a tough matchup against Great Crossing.  On Friday the play at Frankfort against the crosstown rival Panthers.

14. Model (5-8)

The Patriots only game last week was in the semifinals of the 11th Region All A Tournament where they fell to Lexington Christian Academy 71-54.  This week they host Nelson County on Tuesday, followed by Madison Southern on Friday.  They go on the road to complete the week with a trip to Lynn Camp on Saturday.

15. Scott County (4-7)

The Cardinals won the only game that they were able to play last week, 69-50 over Harrison County.  Montae Washburn led a balanced attack for Scott County with 14 points.  The Cardinals have 2 tough 11th Region matchups this week.  They host Henry Clay on Tuesday before going on the road Friday to face Frederick Douglass.  They then travel to Clay County where they will be matched up with Knox Central in the Bobby Keith Classic.

16. Berea (4-9)

The Pirates only game last week was in the All A Region quarterfinals where they dropped a 61-59 heartbreaker to Frankfort.  Liam Brewer sank 5 three pointers in 8 attempts to finish with 17 points against the Panthers.  Berea has a pair of home games this week.  On Tuesday the take on Bluegrass United, and on Saturday they host the Bill Smallwood Classic, where they will play Bishop Brossert.

17. Paul Laurence Dunbar (2-9)

The Bulldogs had all of their games cancelled last week.  This week they have a pair of home games.  On Tuesday they square off against Lafayette before taking on Garrard County on Saturday.

18. Lafayette (2-10)

The Generals, who have now been idle since December 29th, will have their first game of 2025 on Tuesday when they play Paul Laurence Dunbar on the road.  On Thursday they host Bluegrass United before going back on the road to take on Harrison County on Saturday.
