14th Region: Week 2

Featured Replies

We are now officially two weeks into the season. We've had a rematch between #1 Hazard and #2 Breathitt County. We had the biggest mountain tournament in the area this week with the WYMT Mountain Classic.

THE TOP 10!

1) Hazard (6-0): The Bulldogs participated in the WYMT Mountain Classic. Hazard would start the tournament off with a crushing win over Prestonsburg 77-37. With the win, it would assure a rematch between #1 Hazard and #2 Breathitt County, Hazard defeated the Bobcats 64-51 in the season opener.

Hazard would repeat the victory as they would storm past the Bobcats 63-41. Hazard would then, advance to the championship game of the WYMT Mountain Classic, facing the Black Bears of Harlan County, who was the state runner-up last season. Hazard would sneak past the Black Bears 53-52, giving the Black Bears their first loss on the season.

2) Breathitt County (2-2): The Bobcats also participated in the WYMT Mountain Classic, they opened up with Pineville out of the 13th Region. Breathitt County was able to get past Pineville in a thriller, 72-69. Senior Austin Sperry led the Bobcats with 22 points. Cannan Gross added 19 in the Bobcats' win. Breathitt County would advance on to face #1 Hazard Bulldogs in the semi-finals in a rematch from the season opener just a few days prior. Breathitt County didn't have the horses to run with the Dawgs as they would fall to Hazard 63-41. Senior Austin Sperry only had 7 points on 3/13 shooting.

3) Perry County Central (3-3): The Commodores also participated in the WYMT Mountain Classic, making them one of four 14th Region team to participate in the WYMT Mountain Classic.  The Commodores would get the start they were hoping for as they suffered a 59-57 defeat to Clay County. Senior Trayten Woods led the Commodores with 21 points and 5 boards. Perry County Central would go on to face, 14th Region foe, Knott County Central, in what end up being another thriller, which seen the Commodores squeaking past the Patriots 61-58. Senior Trayten Woods led the Commodores with 17.

4) Powell County (4-1): The Pirates picked up two wins this past week, defeating Bluegrass United 67-62 and district foe, Owsley County 73-39. Junior Bryson Edwards led the Pirates with 17 against BGU and 24 against Owsley County. The Pirates seem to be clicking on all cylinders this early on.

5) Estill County (5-1): The Engineers suffered they're first defeat on the season, falling big time 85-40 on the road at Madison Central, a team they had defeated last season.  Estill County got to participate in the Hoosier Gym Classic at the iconic Hoosier Gym in Knightstown Indiana. They would take on Newton Falls, Ohio. The Engineers would come out victorious in the game, defeating the Tigers 57-50. That would be the Tigers second loss on the season.

6) Knott County Central (1-4): The Patriots was one out of four 14th Region teams to participate in the WYMT Mountain Classic, which was held at John C. Combs Arena on the campus of Perry County Central. Unfortunately for the Patriots, they would end up losing both of they're games, falling 68-53 to Harlan County and a heart breaker to Perry County Central 61-58. Chance Amburgey led the Patriots with 17 in the loss to Harlan County. He led the Patriots with 16 in the loss to Perry County Central. Drake Slone added 14 in the loss.

7) Letcher County Central (1-3): The Cougars had the week off last week and will return to action on Monday taking on district foe, Cordia.

8 ) Leslie County (4-1): The Eagles rebounded from they're loss to Shelby Valley on Dec. 7th with a big road win over Owsley County 72-47. Jesse Hoskins led the Eagles with 20. Jayden Hacker added 16 in the win.

9) Wolfe County (2-2): The Wolves spit they're two games last week, defeating district foe, Jackson City 75-58 before falling to Frankfort 71-34 on the road. Caleb Creech and Jayden Molands led the Wolves in the win over Jackson City with 21 and 19. Caleb Creech had 22 of the Wolves 34 points in the loss at Frankfort. What will it take for the Wolves to get the den straightened out?

10) Jenkins (5-0): Coach Lee has the Cavaliers off to they're best start in sometime, sitting at 5-0 with one of the wins coming over 15th region's Belfry Pirates 71-64. Three out of they're five wins have came against out of state teams.

THE REST!

11) Buckhorn (1-3): The Wildcats suffered they're third straight loss, dropping a 77-59 contest to Shelby Valley. The Wildcats aren't doing too hot right now but the season did just start.

12) Owsley County (2-6): The Owls have gone 1-3 in they're last four games, which is the same start they had to begin the season. They picked up a win over Cordia 60-38 but have lost games to Leslie County 72-42, Powell County 73-39 and OBI 68-54.

13) Lee County (0-6): The Bobcats suffered two more losses this week, falling to Model 83-55 and Menifee County 64-63.

14) Jackson City (2-4): The Tigers picked up they're second win on the season defeating June Buchanan 64-45 but they also suffered a loss, a district loss to Wolfe County 75-58.

15) Cordia (0-5): With three more losses this week, Cordia is still searching for win #1. When will they ever get it?

16) June Buchanan (0-4): Once a powerhouse in the 14th Region, the Crusaders have dwindled down to struggling to get wins. Things aren't good in Pippa Passes.
