Severe Weather Alert Day Saturday 8/17/24

Featured Replies

Active weather is forecast over the weekend. Some strong to severe storms will be possible on Saturday afternoon and evening. The main time frame of concern is 2–11 pm EDT. The main severe weather hazard is isolated damaging winds. Things could change as the threat level has increased since this morning. I will update everyone early tomorrow morning.

Scattered, severe thunderstorms are possible in parts of Kentucky and the Ohio Valley on Saturday afternoon. Wind and hail are the primary threats.

The Great Lakes/Midwest trough will progress east today and extend from Lower MI-KY by 2–8 pm EDT. which will prove favorable for scattered robust convection, especially by early afternoon as the boundary layer destabilizes with daytime heating. The latest model guidance suggests a considerable amount of convection will likely evolve along/ ahead of the wind shift, concentrated within a zone of stronger instability -- KY/southern OH. While some supercell potential does exist across this region, the majority of storms will likely be multicellular with clusters common. Wind/hail are expected with this activity.
